It's hearbreaking that people cannot afford to feed their babies, children.

But war on woke and immigration is a vote winner.

Every now and then the magnitude of what the tories have done to this countries system of politics hits me and I feel sick.

This is genuine ‘never thought that would happen here’ stuff which is, of course, exactly what has been preyed on.

The lot of them should be under house arrest and

Absolutely. If you think about it too much, and fully see what's actually happening, and what way things are actually likely to go in the next few years for any length of time it'd be hard to function on a day to day basis. But need to balance that with being alive to the fact it.

We shouldn't be that surprised. We do see that reflected on MN a fair amount.

So many things that the current government have done are so jaw dropping, proroguing parliament, endless parties, this latest with Braverman that I just end up asking myself "is this real?". The neglect of the NHS, the failure to address the problems in education and other essential services, the ignoring of the cost of living crisis are all normal Tory behaviours. None of that is surprising stuff.

Actually, instead of the things with thought were squirrels, it's the outrageous things that have been done since Johnson came to power are the distractions from fundamental policy failures, in areas that are the normal backbone of government.

I just feel punch drunk.

Nadine Dorries is still Culture Secretary isn't she?

She's retweeted a meme showing Sunak knifing Johnson in the back.

I can't be the only person that thinks this is disgraceful? I mean you only have to think for a nanosecond about what happened to David Amies and Jo Cox to think absolutely not appropriate.

It's just shows terrible judgment.

I don't have an awful lot of time for Liz Truss but surely she needs to put some distance between her views and Dorries?

I have think a lot of people miss the fact that the leader doesn’t have ultimate power, bills still need to pass through Parliament etc. Everyone banged on about Boris has given xxxxx money to Ukraine- no Parliament as a whole voted to. We do not have a despot in power- yes they can be influential and their words carry weight but leaders are not all powerful despots!!!!!

Quia · 31/07/2022 11:21

Now Sunak thinks the Equality Act is "woke nonsense". Yeah, we should be free to discriminate whenever we feel like it against people inconsiderate enough to be the wrong sex, colour, religion etc or who have been careless enough to become disabled.

I increasingly feel that both candidates are just desperately promising what they think will appeal to the electorate they are dealing with currently. Which raises a big question about how such a tiny but bigoted section of the population gets to choose the next PM. There really needs to be requirement for a GE if a Prime Minister resigns or is chucked out.

I think / hope that they are forgetting that they need to be reelected as a party and if they go too far right and forget the rest of the country as they are pandering to the members, they will face a backlash at the next election.

balalake · 31/07/2022 11:30

I don't want an immediate general election myself. A year or so to reinforce how useless the new government will be, instead of people believing promises which won't be kept, means more chance of no Tory majority.

Lonelycrab · 31/07/2022 11:35

I think it would be better if the deputy had to complete the term. Obviously I’m not some Raab fan, and I’m not sure we’d be any better off if that happened but it would seem fairer to me. Too much control in the hands of far too few people as it stands.

Notonthestairs · 31/07/2022 11:45

I'm not especially keen on an early election. I think we've wasted sufficient time & money on this leadership race and we/they need to press on focusing on helping people manage escalating costs. Let the Conservatives own the current crises.

But of course if they go for it (and I think they will) then we will see Johnson shunted in to a safe seat. We will see more gibberish about the war on woke. And yet more outlandish proposals in manifestos (which will be dumped post election).

People are focused on keeping a roof over their heads and therefore turnout will be low.

Notonthestairs · 31/07/2022 11:46

What else is a Deputy for? It's almost like it's an unnecessary position!

The candidates latest 'bright' ideas

Conservative leadership hopeful Rishi Sunak has said he would introduce a £10 fine for patients who repeatedly miss GP or hospital appointments.

Mr Sunak told the Sunday Telegraph he wanted to be "transformational" and "do something brave and... different".

His rival Liz Truss meanwhile unveiled plans to ensure students who get top grades would automatically be invited to apply to Oxford or Cambridge.

cakeorwine · 31/07/2022 12:07

Are they just making policy ideas up now without thinking about the practicalities?

I know people at work like that - big ideas people but who don't think about the practicalities.

Morning!!!

I've been dreadful at keeping up with this thread as ds and I have been in Sheffield as he was competing in British para summer champs.

Although I think not being able to indulge so heavily in politics has done my blood pressure some good Grin

What on earth is the point of that Truss policy? What about the bright students who don't want to go to Oxbridge, or whose subjects are taught better elsewhere? Being invited to apply won't improve their chances of getting a place.

Actually yes, that would make sense. They seem to manage that way in the US, after all. And it would align better with the principle that you vote for a party, not an individual.

DuncinToffee · 31/07/2022 12:46

There is no point, just meaningless soundbites
