The £400 energy help the government is celebrating is not anywhere near enough

However the £400 energy payment is delivered, it won’t plug the hole in family budgets.

From Oct families will be down £192 each month on energy bills alone vs last year. Then there’s the soaring cost of food, petrol & other essentials.

A £66/month payment is not enough.

The government knows the scale of the problem, but has responded with a vastly insufficient short-term payment that has come far too late for those who have already been skipping meals and going without heating for months.

& there's no long-term govt plan in sight: No attempt to reform our broken energy market so that it works for us. No investment in insulating our homes. No plan to increase clean domestic energy so that we’re not at the mercy of markets again.

We deserve better than this.

And then there is the NHS crisis which is hardly getting a mention.

12 years of Tory austerity

the80sweregreat · 29/07/2022 10:34

Penny Mordaunt mentioned the NHS dentist crisis during the very first debate. Nobody else has although I didn't watch the hustings last night.

Roussette · 29/07/2022 18:41

Truss is being taken to task about her endless criticism of her school and the area.
Locals are pissed off.
Hardly surprising given she made it to Oxbridge because of teachers and tutors at her school

She is tone deaf and in the BJ mould

I thought that was Badenock, who disingenuously said she couldn’t get an appointment - as if with a City banker husband and her own £84k salary she’s obviously going to rely on NHS dentistry. They make themselves look ridiculous with these attempts to seem relatable.

the80sweregreat · 29/07/2022 18:52

Liz Truss's secondary school couldn't have been that bad unless she received a lot of tutoring from her parents or something. Her dad was a Uni professor, so I'm sure she had a lot more help than most children with anything she might have struggled with and they knew the value of education.
I can't see the conservatives being too bothered about education funding although Rishi Sunak seems keen to keep Grammar schools going i believe.
Just paying the extra fuel bills this winter will keep many of the school bursers busy too.

the80sweregreat · 29/07/2022 18:54

I do remember Penny Mordaunt talking about the dentists at one stage during the first round on channel four.
The idea that Kemi B couldn't find a private practice dentist is ridiculous. I'm sure she can afford to see one!

Notonthestairs · 29/07/2022 20:29

NHS dentistry has been in dire straits for years. We need more dentists and pay better rates to keep them within the NHS. I believe they are also overdue national contract negotiations.

The number of dentists providing NHS care in England fell from 23,733 at the end of 2020 to 21,544 at the end of January this year, according to the latest NHS figures, which have been obtained by the Association of Dental Groups (ADG) under freedom of information laws.
Given that dentists each have a caseload of about 2,000 patients, the depletion of the workforce has left an estimated 4 million people without access to NHS care. The NHS now has the smallest number of dentists it has had for a decade, according to the ADG, which represents major chains of surgeries.

Covid, Brexit and government underfunding of NHS dental services have combined to create a “critical” situation which is likely to get worse before it gets better, the ADG warned.

@Notonthestairs

This is a subject dear to my heart. I have gum disease. I've struggled in the most unimaginable ways for a long time. however I have the money to pay for Denplan now and get treatment that I need. (big op coming up, dreading it)

I feel so sorry for those who are NHS patients because they just aren't being looked after and believe me I know about PAIN when I was an NHS patient. It was all reactive not proactive and my teeth have suffered for it.

There has been little mention of the problems facing the UK in the debates.

I would love to see them being challenged by Labour voters. On things like education, NHS, fuel poverty, cost of living, social care, housing....

Yes yes to this.

What an easy ride they have at the hustings.

I cant wait for the GE hustings, I went last time. It was when the Russian report was being held back and it was uproar.

Trouble is... I'm in a safe Tory seat... but what is safe now?

Rousette- I'm sorry to read about your gum disease. My uncle has been in a great deal of pain with similar. He has excellent care now but as you say it's reactive rather than proactive - there just isn't the capacity to spare to get ahead of problems unfortunately.

Thank you. 😊
That's exactly it. I feel so so sorry with those stuck with NHS dental care who are suffering

I can't get a dentist at all. No dentists taking NHS patients for 50 miles. NHS dentistry is a disaster.

This is one way to avoid acting illegally..Pretend it's not happening.

Don't ask, don't tell, Braverman style.

The purpose and duty of the AG is to advise the Government on legal matters and issues relating to policies/actions - this is clearly a subversion of it's role.

Honestly, the depths this particular government has to sink to in order to cover its own arse. We are a banana republic.

How much more can Suella Braverman debase the role of Attorney General?
And how much lower can this wretched government sink?"

Tom Tugendhat is now endorsing Liz Truss.
I have to say I am really surprised at this.

I am really not sure I can cope with two years of Liz Truss. But on the plus side I think she'll trash the Party (and hopefully not the Country)

Notonthestairs · 30/07/2022 08:13

This is a very interesting but worrying read. Truss on Climate Change and the NHS and her ties with US lobbyists.

I see Sunak has pulled out the culture wars card now - but I bet there is no difference between him and Truss on that.

When people can't afford to eat or heat and business are failing because of economic decline, it's not culture wars people are thinking about

L1ttledrummergirl · 30/07/2022 09:24

I don't like either of them, I think it's a choice of who's not worst rather than who's best, but on balance I would choose Truss because at least she has not shown disloyalty to the country by holding a green card whilst in government.

Someone who kept available the option to jump ship when it went wrong is not someone I trust anywhere near the PM role.

And that's without the other stuff he's been doing while hanging on Johnsons shirt tails.

DuncinToffee · 30/07/2022 09:52

I think Truss's loyalties and ideals have been quite clear whereas Sunak did a good job portraying himself as someone he isn't, his nasty side is far more on show now.

Excellent reporting from @PoliticsJOE_UK on the cost of living crisis.

Shoplifting in this Liverpool supermarket has gotten so bad, there are security tags on baby formula.

But if they catch you, they won’t prosecute you.

Every now and then the magnitude of what the tories have done to this countries system of politics hits me and I feel sick.

This is genuine ‘never thought that would happen here’ stuff which is, of course, exactly what has been preyed on.

The lot of them should be under house arrest and
