Apologies if there is already a thread on this! But I just want to see what you people think.

So we now know it’s down to Truss or Sunak, anyone have any idea as to who you think it might be in the final?

I had thought it may be Sunak, but then I read something that says the odds are actually in Liz Truss’ favour?

I hope it’s Truss tbh.

Thoughts?

Truss is an absolute idiot ( pretty much like all the front bench ) and I would love her to get the job.
The material for comedy and drama writers will be rich and plentiful.
The Conservative Party .. they just keep on giving ( but not where it matters )..ConfusedWink

Not mad keen on either to be fair but I do find it very strange when people have an issue with Sunak's wife's family wealth and his education etc

His wife's father was a self made man who came from nothing...so he did incredibly well on his own. Sunak's parents also came form working class background and worked very hard to send him to a good school.

Interesting that no one had an issue with other Tory (or even Labour) leaders going to Eton/Harrow/Oxford/Cambridge etc....but Sunaks background/wealth is all of a sudden an issue? Double standards much?

Neither cited article establishes he lied; nor do they support your other defamatory allegations.
ive reported your posts. MN doesn’t deserve to be exposed to risk because some posters can’t keep hostility within reasonable bounds.

Oh. Neither.

Whitehorsegirl · 20/07/2022 18:37

Having to choose between two people who are totally detached from the real world and who were part of the corrupt Johnson government...lovely.

Sunak wasted billions of our money with the Covid furlough scheme through failing to stop fraud and a lack of proper management. He has also given us record inflation and no action whatsoever to control spiralling utility bills.

Truss is useless to the point of being a national embarrassment.

Bring on a general election with a Labour government or a Lib Dem/Labour coalition at the end of it. The Conservatives are a dangerous joke and we have destroyed our country in the past 12 years.

TheDogsMother · 20/07/2022 18:37

Sunak with his wealth has no clue of the challenges ordinary people face and will not reduce taxes despite his family benefitting from a favourable tax regime. Also my personal grudge is him excluding c 3 million tax payers from any financial help during the pandemic.

Remainer Truss has rewritten her Brexit views to suit the situation.

So neither. Larry would be more popular and would probably do a better job too.

Numbat2022 · 20/07/2022 18:39

Truss please - I so look forward to her attempting to do PMQs against Angela Raynor 😂

She's in the running because she's the chosen ERG puppet, not because of her competence or qualification for the role.

Spanielsarepainless · 20/07/2022 18:40

Sunak, as my cousin, a tough Yorkshireman, has a lot of time for Rishi, who happens to be his MP. Truss is a total nonentity, like a female John Major.

theworldhas · 20/07/2022 18:40

Liz Truss has to be possibly the thickest MP in the country. So I guess Sunak wins it by default, though good luck getting people to vote for a multi billionaire tax dodging Blair soundalike.

ChuHua · 20/07/2022 18:41

I would choose Truss as I think she's far more likely not to win a general election.

theworldhas · 20/07/2022 18:42

As an aside it’s pretty funny that a military obsessed Brexiter who worked on the campaign of GW Bush is now considered by most Tories as being too woke/left wing.

Staggersaurus · 20/07/2022 18:43

This is well and truly scraping the bottom of a very grubby barrel. How low can the Tories actually go? Mind you I thought they were at rock bottom with Boris 🤷‍♀️

walkersareback · 20/07/2022 18:46

I don't like ether of of them - but for the sake of the country maybe somebody who is so wealthy that they don't need to court Russian money would be a good thing - so Sunak.

Although the best outcome would be a quick general election and the tories out

MakkaPakkas · 20/07/2022 18:48

Both pretty shite options but I'd go with Sunak as he has the edge on environmental issues.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 20/07/2022 18:49

I mean I don’t love Sunak. But Truss is just far worse.

Festoonlights · 20/07/2022 18:50

I am fully entitled to my view tully- whether you like it or not. Sunak has been a truly dreadful chancellor.

theworldhas · 20/07/2022 18:52

@MakkaPakkas
The Conservatives will never put the environment over the demands of multinationals and industry - it doesn’t matter who is in charge. See every previous manifesto for proof or look at the Tories record whenever in government.

Festoonlights · 20/07/2022 18:52

The overwhelming majority of people want to pay LESS tax nor more, and to avoid a recession. Fact.

dontcallmelen · 20/07/2022 18:53

Starmer came from a very ordinary background, Mum a nurse & Dad a toolmaker I think. He went to a grammar school which then became fee paying not sure if he got a bursary/scholarship parents didn’t have the means to fund, his mother had some quite serious health issues which must have been difficult for the family.

pilates · 20/07/2022 18:54

Sunak

Festoonlights · 20/07/2022 18:56

I find it laughable that anyone thinks Starmer will win the GE based on a conservative leadership change. You could install Kermit the frog next in No10 and people still can’t vote for Labour. What would they be voting for exactly?! The issues with Labour run far deeper than whatever is happening in the Tory party!

The overwhelming majority of people want to pay LESS tax nor more, and to avoid a recession. Fact.

That’s odd. The poll in the Sunday Times was showing 89% of respondents in favour of kicking tax cuts down the road when I completed it.

Festoonlights · 20/07/2022 18:57

I wonder who sponsored that poll 🙄

theworldhas · 20/07/2022 18:57

I hope Truss drops the tight dresses and steps up to the plate. Merkel was hardly gods gift to charm but she is now one of the world s most powerful leaders historically. I believe Truss can be the same but with a sense of humour.

Oh my God someone has just compared Truss to Merkel. 😂
The Tories may be slowly wrecking the country, but I have to admit they’re providing some moments of great comedy along the way.

The Sunday Times I imagine since it’s on their website.
