Apologies if there is already a thread on this! But I just want to see what you people think.

So we now know it’s down to Truss or Sunak, anyone have any idea as to who you think it might be in the final?

I had thought it may be Sunak, but then I read something that says the odds are actually in Liz Truss’ favour?

I hope it’s Truss tbh.

Thoughts?

I think the racists (not including pp here) in the conservative membership will not vote for Sumac

CraftyGin · 20/07/2022 16:53

I'm a party member so get to vote for these candidates.

I haven't been following the process so far, as I just wanted to wait until down to two candidates.

Leaning towards Sunak, but early days for me.

Good to hear

The thing that frightens me about Truss is her main proposers are Rees-Mogg and Dorris. I don’t want those idiots in the cabinet again. At least Sunack has some vaguely sensible people behind him.

Mind you I want them to lose the next election so maybe Truss will do that.

I can't see the next Tory leader going near Dorries with a bargepole.

Nads, is really going to miss ole BJ. This final cabinet photo taken yesterday made me laugh.

Loving the idea that Truss is no nonsense, given the fact nothing but nonsense comes out of her mouth…

😅😅
The thought of either of them terrifies me.

Kezzie200 · 20/07/2022 17:48

I do get why people don't like Starmer and think Labour have better options but pretty much all of the main current Labour shadow cabinet would be better than the current Tory mob. They might not all have huge personalities but they are intelligent, have a handle on their brief, will get on with the job, turn up and have a moral and ethical approach. And they will genuinely care about the people affected by this crisis.

curiousitygotthebetterofme · 20/07/2022 16:32

She just seems to be the no-nonsense, hardworking and get the job done type. Apart from that I don’t really know her!

on other hand, I wouldn’t want Rishi as PM given his role in Partygate and given his and his wife’s financial affairs. He’s out of touch with the ordinary people

HAHAHAHA you don't follow politics then. She's a muppet.

I sincerely hope she gets it... because she is shit. I really look forward to watching her at PMQs.

BreadInCaptivity · 20/07/2022 17:49

Isn't Boris going to elevate Nadine to the HoL?

Sure I read that somewhere.

Nice by-election present for the next leader...

StationaryMagpie · 20/07/2022 17:49

shit or shit.

neither, they can both get in the bin

Huntswomanonthemove · 20/07/2022 17:51

Truss. I can't forgive Sunak for the 3million excluded from any help, during lockdown.

LemonsOnSaleAgain · 20/07/2022 17:51

Larry the 10 Downing Street cat would be my preference over these two.

Ugh yes. Apparently he wants to stuff the Lords with 40 new peers.

BoJoGoGoGo · 20/07/2022 17:52

Liz Truss. Her better moments perhaps.

I just love watching her, she's hilarious Grin

I really really hope the Tory members do their duty and elect this person.

PlanetNormal · 20/07/2022 17:52

If I were a Tory member, I would vote for Sunak, as he appears marginally less ghastly than Truss. I would, however, have concerns about how a stupidly rich, ultra slick, non-white posh boy would go down in the Red Wall. His ethnicity may (quite rightly) be a non-issue in London, but I can assure you it will be among older white working class voters in Hartlepool, Mansfield & Stoke.

I’m not a Tory, however, so I hope the appalling Truss wins. Even for a Tory, she is seriously unlikeable, and her fake Thatcher cosplay act is 🤮. She combines May’s charisma with Johnson’s agenda & policies, which makes her a gift to both Labour & the Lib Dems.

Festoonlights · 20/07/2022 17:55

I am a party member and I will be voting for Truss.
Why?
People urgently need their taxes lowered now before the energy issues begin in the autumn. Sunak will continue with the 70 year high taxes and has a perchant for big spending. Big mistake on my view. I agree with Truss that we don’t need to rush to repay the covid debt - it is more like a one off war time debt, and it should be paid back slowly so that we don’t imperil the economy now when it’s already so wobbly. She also was one of the only ministers to argue that mailing young families pay for care homes for elderly wealthy home owners was not fair.

I have always respected her very pro woman /rights stance, she has been quietly working on this for years and years behind the scenes. I have watched her develop strategies for a very long time and highlight the major issues robustly, I feel safe as a woman in her hands. My dc are also safer as a result.

Forget about ‘charisma’ what you have with Truss is a rock solid experienced leader that has had plenty of time to consider the future policies/experience and she isn’t going to crumble and cower.

Sunak was also fined, so what is the point replacing Johnson for a supposed lack of judgement! Sunak is very weak, I find him quite lame. In what world does one go to a building site in Prada shoes?? Even just lacking the basic awareness to know this just isn’t going to go down well is really concerning. Liz Truss was a very bright girl from Leeds that went through the state system, and them on to Oxford. She knows her stuff.

I hope Truss drops the tight dresses and steps up to the plate. Merkel was hardly gods gift to charm but she is now one of the world s most powerful leaders historically. I believe Truss can be the same but with a sense of humour.

Mordaunt has been stitched up for sure….

I'm no fan of Starmer, I think he's been hopelessly ineffective as LOTO despite having an open goal across the ballot box and no end of material with which to skewer the Tories. If it's a choice between the three of them though, I'm Starmer all the way. I think he's vastly more fundamentally honest and grounded than Sunak, and Truss is genuinely worrying in the way that she stumbles and bumbles from one gaff to another, can't answer simple questions relating to her role, and is so blatantly and relentlessly coached that she looks totally unhinged when she attempts to address any sort of serious topic or deliver a speech. There is nothing going on behind her eyes whatsoever, and she has the deranged forced smile of someone you wouldn't trust near sharp implements.

So actually, the background is nothing to do with it - it’s more about the qualities of the individual? I agree with that - what I can’t agree with is the notion that starmer has the right qualities. He seems to me a very seriously limited individual.

TullyApplebottom · 20/07/2022 17:57

And his attempted sleight of hand on gender issues doesn’t strike me as terribly honest either.

carefullycourageous · 20/07/2022 17:59

Merkel was hardly gods gift to charm but she is now one of the world s most powerful leaders historically. Absolutely offensive to Merkel to even discuss her in the same breath as Truss. Merkel is intelligent, thoughtful, principled, knowledegable. Truss is an idiot.

Completely agree. I don’t think either of them have factored in the opposition from their own side. Johnson will sit on the back benches hurling shit until the next election.

Festoonlights · 20/07/2022 18:03

I don’t agree and you are being rather silly. A comment with all the eloquence for a four year old.

Starmer doesn’t even know what a woman is may remind you, and is a lisping robot with no policies whatsoever I hardly think Truss has much to worry about back in the real world.

Dreamingofthecool · 20/07/2022 18:05

Neither but marginally Truss as hopefully she’ll be bad enough to finally get the Tories out

Festoonlights · 20/07/2022 18:05

One hundred and ten percent. Johnson isn’t going anywhere, he will sit back and wait for the party to beg for his return.

There are rumours that thousands of members are demanding he be put on the ballot, so it may not even take that long….

Blossomtoes · 20/07/2022 18:05

with no policies whatsoever

How did the Tories manage to steal the windfall tax?
