Opinions: Truss or Sunak?

Apologies if there is already a thread on this! But I just want to see what you people think.

So we now know it’s down to Truss or Sunak, anyone have any idea as to who you think it might be in the final?

I had thought it may be Sunak, but then I read something that says the odds are actually in Liz Truss’ favour?

I hope it’s Truss tbh.

Thoughts?

Truss, all the way, but I think we will get lumbered with Rishi sadly.

do the people who think Sunak’s lack of certain experiences make him a bad bet think the same about starmer?
both come from middle class families. Sunak has worked in finance and made and married money. Starmer is a classic north London lawyer - no exposure to finance, commerce, business in his life. So he seems pretty limited in some important respects too. Does this matter?

Whilst a GP and a pharmacist are a middle class couple of parents, Sunak's education at prep school and Winchester gave him a pretty insulated view of life from a very early age.

And while I agree that no one candidate can have experienced every part of life, and work in the City has some advantages for a Chancellor, describing the DPP as "a classic North London Lawyer" is pretty misleading. Working on the front lines of the CPS exposes you to a lot of the most challenging areas of British life in a very hands-on way.

Neither of them will win the next election.

It will be Truss imo, the Conservatives will rather a woman fucks it up (as in I don't think anyone cam turn around our current situation)

juliainthedeepwater · 20/07/2022 17:20

I am anti-Tory so Truss. I think she’s truly a gift to the opposition. Its actually staggering to me the members think she’s the best they’ve got. I don’t actually think Sunak is a big threat either. My main issue with him as a PM is his freakish wealth. It’s just a degree too rich, even for the Tories.

Anothernamechangeplease · 20/07/2022 17:21

She just seems to be the no-nonsense, hardworking and get the job done type. Apart from that I don’t really know her!

This is the problem with our politics, really. People making judgements on vague perceptions without really knowing what people stand for. Not having a go, OP, just saying that this is how we end up with the terrible politicians that we've got.

I don't want either of them, but I think Sunak is the lesser of the two evils. I take comfort in the fact that I reckon either of them is likely to lose the next election.

balalake · 20/07/2022 17:21

Rishi Sunak for me, though it is a choice between being hit with a baseball bat on your left leg or your right. Less incapable, more people with some ability will serve in a cabinet under him, and has moral values.

Liz Truss married and yet four years later was having an affair with a married man, sticking to her marriage vows possibly even for a shorter period than Boris Johnson.

Hé didn’t though. The DPP doesn’t get his hands dirty with the day to day work. Starmer is a typical Doughty Street human rights lawyer; that’s a pretty rarified background.
my DH came across him professionally and thought he was OK as DPP for what it’s worth; I’m just not sure why we think that (pretty narrow) experience is not a problem, whereas where Sunak went to school is?
like it or not, Sunak’s family are thorough going méritocrats - not a bad thing.

eleanorwish · 20/07/2022 17:23

Jacob Rees Mogg thinks he was a left leaning chancellor, so maybe that's something in Sunak's favour?

TemperTrap · 20/07/2022 17:23

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 20/07/2022 16:31

I hope Truss gets it. She's woeful and will be a gift to Labour.

This ^ She will be so shit she'll make Starmer look highly efficient and dynamic.

I can't see her without thinking of 'pork products'. 😄

HavfrueDenizKisi · 20/07/2022 17:23

Both are shite. Liz Truss will be a gift to any other political party come a general election. Sunak is very very very marginally preferable but it is truly woeful.

SarahShorty · 20/07/2022 17:24

Kemi. But to provide an opinion; neither. Back stabber and inflation-causing Sunak or Remainer and former LibDem Truss. Neither for me.

TemperTrap · 20/07/2022 17:24

CraftyGin · 20/07/2022 16:53

I'm a party member so get to vote for these candidates.

I haven't been following the process so far, as I just wanted to wait until down to two candidates.

Leaning towards Sunak, but early days for me.

Why are you a party member? Genuine question, not a dig.

I'm no fan of Starmer, I think he's been hopelessly ineffective as LOTO despite having an open goal across the ballot box and no end of material with which to skewer the Tories. If it's a choice between the three of them though, I'm Starmer all the way. I think he's vastly more fundamentally honest and grounded than Sunak, and Truss is genuinely worrying in the way that she stumbles and bumbles from one gaff to another, can't answer simple questions relating to her role, and is so blatantly and relentlessly coached that she looks totally unhinged when she attempts to address any sort of serious topic or deliver a speech. There is nothing going on behind her eyes whatsoever, and she has the deranged forced smile of someone you wouldn't trust near sharp implements.

FourTeaFallOut · 20/07/2022 17:29

Liz Truss will win, the conservative members don't like Sunak. I'm just relieved Mordaunt is out. Reeves has stepped off the gender pulpit, maybe someone in the shadow cabinet actually has designs to win an election? I can live in hope.

vickibee · 20/07/2022 17:31

All the new red wall Tory MPs must be reeling at the thought of a GE, they would surely lose their seats. We have a Tory MP for the first time think S Yorks ex mining area, unheard of.
Liz Truss will hit the ground from a Great height ? 😂

bengalcat · 20/07/2022 17:31

Hopefully Sunak

Goldpaw · 20/07/2022 17:34

Penny Mordaunt would have been tricky for Labour I think.

I think either Liz Truss or Rishi Sunack will be a gift, Liz Truss moreso, so I hope she gets it.

I think there's a higher chance of an election when she really starts messing things up.

Polls of Tory members showed that Penny Mordaunt, Liz Truss and Kemi Badenoch were all vastly more popular that Rishi Sunack.

He also seems to have the media on side because he's always shown as being the tallest candidate when he's more Kemi Badenoch's height. This annoys me!

Staynow · 20/07/2022 17:35

Image of Truss on a tank is seared into my brain unfortunately. Got to be Sunak. He might be shamelessly rich and clueless about how real people live but he has to have more morals than the whole rest of the party put together (low bar I realise) and does appear to be intelligent which obviously puts him head and shoulders above BoJo.

LizzieSiddal · 20/07/2022 17:35

The thing that frightens me about Truss is her main proposers are Rees-Mogg and Dorris. I don’t want those idiots in the cabinet again. At least Sunack has some vaguely sensible people behind him.

Mind you I want them to lose the next election so maybe Truss will do that.

Gettingonwithlife · 20/07/2022 17:39

Truss

JazzyBBG · 20/07/2022 17:40

Both are quite horrifying. Tories really are hellbent on destroying themselves. I'm still confused how they managed to lose some of their best options early on (Sajid for one).

fizzywat · 20/07/2022 17:41

Liz Truss. Her better moments perhaps.

MarshaBradyo · 20/07/2022 17:43

I’m glad Mordaunt is out I don’t really care between the two

Sunak probably but it’s up to party voters and not sure how they’ll swing

Kezzie200 · 20/07/2022 17:44

They are both awful for their own individual reasons and also one joint reason - they've been so close to the current mismanagement.

I can't vote but I hope Truss gets it as she is the better gift to Labour.
