Apologies if there is already a thread on this! But I just want to see what you people think.

So we now know it’s down to Truss or Sunak, anyone have any idea as to who you think it might be in the final?

I had thought it may be Sunak, but then I read something that says the odds are actually in Liz Truss’ favour?

I hope it’s Truss tbh.

Thoughts?

I am a party member and I will be voting for Truss.
Why?
People urgently need their taxes lowered now before the energy issues begin in the autumn. Sunak will continue with the 70 year high taxes and has a perchant for big spending. Big mistake on my view. I agree with Truss that we don’t need to rush to repay the covid debt - it is more like a one off war time debt, and it should be paid back slowly so that we don’t imperil the economy now when it’s already so wobbly. She also was one of the only ministers to argue that mailing young families pay for care homes for elderly wealthy home owners was not fair.

I have always respected her very pro woman /rights stance, she has been quietly working on this for years and years behind the scenes. I have watched her develop strategies for a very long time and highlight the major issues robustly, I feel safe as a woman in her hands. My dc are also safer as a result.

Forget about ‘charisma’ what you have with Truss is a rock solid experienced leader that has had plenty of time to consider the future policies/experience and she isn’t going to crumble and cower.

Sunak was also fined, so what is the point replacing Johnson for a supposed lack of judgement! Sunak is very weak, I find him quite lame. In what world does one go to a building site in Prada shoes?? Even just lacking the basic awareness to know this just isn’t going to go down well is really concerning. Liz Truss was a very bright girl from Leeds that went through the state system, and them on to Oxford. She knows her stuff.

I hope Truss drops the tight dresses and steps up to the plate. Merkel was hardly gods gift to charm but she is now one of the world s most powerful leaders historically. I believe Truss can be the same but with a sense of humour.

Mordaunt has been stitched up for sure….

How do we arrange to treat the covid debt like war debt? Doesn’t that rather depend on the willingness of our creditors to play ball?

Starmer thinks women have penises. He is unelectable until he is able to figure out basic biology.

Don’t worry about comments below it’s good to hear views

I worried more about Truss from first debate but second was better

I don’t have the same issues with Sunak, I don’t care about his wife’s wealth really just his policies, but I hope Truss can deal with inflation in her mix

No he doesn’t. Who’s being silly now?

I agree with that. However truss seems to think we can manage our sovereign debt without regard to the debt markets, which marks her out as a different type of incompetent

There are rumours that thousands of members are demanding he be put on the ballot, so it may not even take that long….

This is real. Apparently Lord Cruddas and David Campbell-Bannerman have organised a petition to have "Boris" included along with Sunak and Truss on the ballot that goes to Conservative Party members: conservativepost.co.uk/sign-the-petition-add-boris-to-the-ballot/

BingoBungle · 20/07/2022 18:14

Sunak for me, although I was hoping for Tugendhat. We’re in very deep doodah, and need someone who understands macroeconomics and geopolitics.

I’d rather he was self made rather than someone who married money, but it’s not a sin. He’s loyal to his spouse and devoted to his kids which makes him a very unusual specimen in politics, (and very different to Truss).

saltwaterandsuncream · 20/07/2022 18:16

Truss. Please god. Then - bye bye, Tories!! Don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out.

TravellingSpoon · 20/07/2022 18:18

Both options fill me with horror, but at the beginning I said anyone but Truss, so I guess that means Sunak is my choice.

It is fine to pay the covid debt back more slowly. There is no need to rush it… the creditors aren’t insisting on a short repayment time table. The gov are set to make billions from inflation - it should be used to support families immediately. Anything else would be outrageous and yet Sunak is suggesting we carry on….and the gov sits on the £££

Sunak hasn’t the faintest idea of the struggles normal people are facing that is why. None whatsoever and anyone relying on the state for any reason or is struggling should not feel reassured about Sunak’s presence in No 10, he was the one that missed the warning signs and the ballooning inflation instead of challenging the Bank of England. The crisis (x5) we are dealing with now happened on his watch!

I can’t understand how anyone can have faith in him, he has been a total disaster as a chancellor and also lied and misled the country about his wife’s status and green cards, investments etc. I trust Sunak even less than any other politician.

For sure he has been installed to shape policy to benefit his private investments, companies etc he hasn’t applied for the job of PM for its attractive multi million pound salary and relaxed work ethic has he! He will have his own angle, and a very lucrative one that will please his billionaire father in law. He isn’t there for the purposes of goodwill people!

with no policies whatsoever

How did the Tories manage to steal the windfall tax?

This attitude is so fucking annoying, many of the shadow cabinet have been discussing various policies also recall the Tories nicking quite a few labour policies, she has no principles like the majority of this government she was in favour of remain until it suited her not to be another one putting herself & party before country.

Loving the idea that Truss is no nonsense, given the fact nothing but nonsense comes out of her mouth…

Perhaps she got a word wrong and meant to say "all nonsense"

IsadoraQuagmire · 20/07/2022 18:20

I like Liz Truss. Sunak is a smarmy git.

Lurkerlot · 20/07/2022 18:21

Sunak, he is just so slick and professional.

Festoonlights · 20/07/2022 18:22

The party members are writing to the chair directly.
Believe me when I say this is very far from over for Boris Johnson, that is why he is so cheerful.

You haven’t explained how a debtor arranges to pay money back at a time of his choosing without the agreement of the creditor. How does this work?

TullyApplebottom · 20/07/2022 18:24

Also, where is your evidence that he lied about the tax and immigration matters?

AStar98 · 20/07/2022 18:25

Truss... and then 2024 (if not sooner!) 😁

SunflowerGardens · 20/07/2022 18:26

Sunak is awful. This is the guy who tried to pay for petrol using the barcode scanner in the petrol station Confused not sure what planet he lives on but it's not the same one the rest of us inhabit.

I can't see the next Tory leader going near Dorries with a bargepole.

Nads, is really going to miss ole BJ. This final cabinet photo taken yesterday made me laugh.

Hideous photograph with all that man spreading on the front row.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 20/07/2022 18:30

Sunak. Truss appears to have plans that would wreck our economy

Festoonlights · 20/07/2022 18:32

There is nothing conservative about Sunak sadly
