It's raining here (Devon). And has been cloudy all morning.

Maybe it will pick up a bit later.

Norfolk, heat is insane, going to be a very hot night too. Absolutely awful. I have MS, really struggling.

DD has just said her phone has reached its limit and has put it in the fridge. Will be shortly putting myself in the fridge.

Should be cooler tonight than last night 🤞

APurpleSquirrel · 19/07/2022 15:51

Much cooler in my part of Somerset today - been around 29 degrees & even had a bit of rain, though that has just made it very humid! Hopefully a better night tonight though.

ofwarren · 19/07/2022 16:05

Just had to call the fire brigade as the neighbours fence just randomly set on fire!
It's down to 24 here now near Blackpool

Frezia · 19/07/2022 16:34

SE London, it's 39 in the garden. It's 27 inside, 28 in the bedrooms. We're just about managing. I feel really bad for the firefighters, people in hot kitchens and factories and anyone who has to work outside.

Cass654 · 19/07/2022 16:37

My phone says 27 here in Liverpool but it's meant to be 36. Glad it's not. Tomorrow is supposed to be 19 which I'm looking forward to!!

RockandRollsuicide · 19/07/2022 16:42

Of Warren,is the fire under control?

StarCourt · 19/07/2022 16:43

37 here at the moment and a forecast of thunderstorms tonight

Yes my dh managed to put it out with watering cans and bowls of water. I rang the fire brigade back but they still wanted to come and check as they said it could possibly light again.

AdoraBell · 19/07/2022 17:13

DD2 has traveled home from Uni for a couple of days. Set off at 7am and got home, we collected her from the station, at 4. She tried to get into the fridge🤣

OfWarren. that’s worrying, glad your DH put it out. Hope it stays that way.

It’s down to 28 here, we were forecast a thunder storm but that hasn’t materialised.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/07/2022 17:23

Just hit 40 here

Bigmouthshouthotair · 19/07/2022 17:30

Did touch 40 here DH says it's now 39.

I don't think I've got any sweat left to sweat 😨

Well done that DH. One of our neighbours once accidentally set fire to the other neighbours' shed. They'd extinguished it by the time the fire brigade arrived, but the latter said they'd much rather come out and check than not.

HailAdrian · 19/07/2022 21:48

Well, as far as 2 day heatwaves go, it all seemed mostly uneventful? Disappointing for those predicting lots of death and destruction.

There's been more than enough destruction with the various fires, and there will almost certainly have been excess deaths due to the heat,

The fires are horrific but from what I've read, down to people not using basic common sense and having bbqs in record breaking heat after being warned not to?

Last I read, no fatalities had been reported as a direct result of the heat.

HailAdrian · 19/07/2022 22:18

Bit of a far cry from the predictions of fit and healthy people dropping dead we saw here a couple of days ago.

HotHeatDays · 19/07/2022 22:20

That's how most fires are started, either deliberately or accidentally.

There have been drownings through people (especially children) trying to cool down. You aren't going to know about deaths through heat, unless families allow the info to be released.

But it's ridiculous that we can be explicitly told not to have a bbq and we still do. Or not to go out, especially with our kids/dogs, during the hottest hours of the day yet we still do. It looks as though most people heeded the warnings and advice and were fine. To observe that it was 'mostly uneventful' is not the same as saying 'the fires don't matter.'

We will have to look at excess death statistics later to know the true picture. Heatstroke might go on a death certificate but those dying from heart, kidney, respiratory etc conditions exacerbated by the heat would not have the heatwave on the death certificate so it's impossible to know without looking at population level statistics.
