It's raining here (Devon). And has been cloudy all morning.

Maybe it will pick up a bit later.

My weather app is saying 25/26c just now and I'm north Scotland. It is an absolutely clear blue sky without a cloud to be seen - that's unusual for us near hills!

Work2live · 18/07/2022 15:25

34 degrees in the shade here. North west. I’ve sat in the shade most of the afternoon and I’m sweating.

MusicForASushiRestaurant · 18/07/2022 15:25

@SleepingAgent - it's 32 now in the shade, registering on my garden thermometer. It was 40 earlier in full sun, when i posted earlier!

South East

32 in Northumberland and we are known for how cold we are lol

fishonabicycle · 18/07/2022 15:28

The temperature has to be in the shade! You don't count if it's sitting in full sun!

AdoraBell · 18/07/2022 15:29

Up to 34 now.

Suetwo · 18/07/2022 15:29

I’m in Colchester/Essex. Went for a walk around the block at 3pm and nearly fainted. God, it’s a fierce heat here right now. There were two buzzards swooping over the fields. What with the blistering heat and bleached wheat fields it felt like I was walking through the Australian outback instead of rural Essex.

@CaveMum Great tip, thank you 🙂 I've just ordered one now on prime.

Are people quoting temperatures taken in the sun or the shade - the temperature taken in the shade being the one most comparable to the official temperatures, which are taken in the shade?

Thank you @restedbutexhausted and @ErrolTheDragon 🌻

In the shade here.

Thinkingblonde · 18/07/2022 15:35

32 in the shade in North Yorkshire on the east coast.

picklemewalnuts · 18/07/2022 15:39

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/07/2022 15:18

according to my phone it is 32 but should be 33 at 4.00 pm!
that is odd isnt? getting hotter at 4?

It's cumulative, so it continues to build slowly. Ours peaks at 6pm, then slowly slowly cools til it starts to build again at 5/6am.

howaboutchocolate · 18/07/2022 15:40

38 in the shade here now in Cambs. I think the previous record UK temperature was recorded in Cambridge so I think we might break it today or tomorrow.

It's 28 in the coolest room in my house and the sun hasn't even hit this room yet.

picklemewalnuts · 18/07/2022 15:40

It's 36 outside. Have managed to keep it cooler inside, but don't think that will work tomorrow as we won't be able to cool enough tonight.

Spudlet · 18/07/2022 15:48

The weather station in the garden (which is in the shade) reckons it’s 36.6 here. The car, which is sitting in the sun, reckoned 40 when I went to collect DS. We’re in Norfolk, so that’s about right.

I would describe it as being Quite Warm 🥵 Fortunately it’s stayed fairly cool in the house, although it is starting to warm up a bit now.

Blossomtoes · 18/07/2022 15:50

Our car reckoned it was 38 when I got home 30 minutes ago.

notimagain · 18/07/2022 15:55

For those comparing notes latest measured temperatures at a selection of UK airports...temperatures quoted are those measured at 1520 BST:

Birmingham 34 C
East Mids 35 C
Norwich 36 C
Manchester 34 C
Doncaster Sheffield 36 C

Any errors are mine, excuse any typos. All the above have been measured iaw with met office requirements with regard to equipment used and location at the airport in question.

I’m in Devon, well away from the coast. It was a pleasant 22 this morning when I went for my hairdresser appointment, although warming up as I was coming home.

I wish I was there now, though, cos they’ve got air con! It’s 31 C in the shade now (Bluetooth enabled thermometer hanging on the north- facing wall of the house, never sees the sun)

We are sitting outside (in the shade) because the breeze is nice. I think the kitchen would be cooler, though.

StaunchMomma · 18/07/2022 16:12

It's really ramping this afternoon.

Our (usually pretty much spot on) thermometer is currently reading 35 in the garden shade here in rural south Leicestershire.

The bit of wind feels like pointing a hair dryer ant your face.

cecilthehungryspider · 18/07/2022 16:18

Our thermometer currently reading 40C in the shade BBC How hot is it really? said 38C last time I looked, the BBC weather forecast says 37C. I'm in Cambridgeshire.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/07/2022 16:31

My friends just posted a picture of their thermometer. 114 which is about 42.

Sheffield

TokyoSushi · 18/07/2022 16:39

35 here in Cheshire, I can confirm that it is fcking boiling!

CaveMum · 18/07/2022 16:40

@howaboutchocolate the record of 37.8 was recorded at the Botanic Gardens in Cambridge in 2019.

They’ve tweeted to say they do the temp check at 10.15am each day to look at the recorded temps over the previous 24 hours, so we won’t know whether the record has been broken here until tomorrow.

It's cumulative, so it continues to build slowly. Ours peaks at 6pm, then slowly slowly cools til it starts to build again at 5/6am.

I've no idea what's going on outside, but the temperature in my living room has dropped from 28 to 27.5 over the last hour or so.

Hopefully it's starting to cool down a little (I'm in Sussex).

It's going to be close, Cambridge airport was reporting 38 C at1620 BST.

The aviation reports generally only quote in integral degrees and I think (but not sure for certain, long time since I sat through lectures on this stuuf) they might always round up.
