Anyone think they’ll close schools next week?

Heard someone today say schools might be ordered to close from Monday because of the heat. How likely do you think that is?

No idea but DD came home saying they were considering closing on Tuesday.

StroppyTop · 14/07/2022 17:09

Is that primary?

Very unlikely

Doubtful.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 14/07/2022 17:11

Ours isn't. We were told today at sports day they need to wear their pe kit next week. That's it

AndAllOurYesterdays · 14/07/2022 17:13

I'd be very surprised so near to the school holidays. Also, the classrooms in our small, state primary are air conditioned so would be pretty annoyed if they did close it.

mnahmnah · 14/07/2022 17:13

Never going to happen. Our school has said they can wear PE kit from Monday. We break up on Wednesday anyway

Bluebellsand · 14/07/2022 17:18

Our one is not closing. Unless Boris tell them too.

Sixgeese · 14/07/2022 17:19

My DDs secondary school is working a Continental Day on Monday and Tuesday (they break up Tuesday anyway)

Effectively they are shortening all lessons breaks and lunchtime and finishing at 1pm

IamChipmunk · 14/07/2022 17:26

No, very much doubt it. We have lots of rooms with aircon so staff are just swapping rooms if needs be.
We have taught in the dark before in the middle of a winter power cut so pretty sure this isn't goin to trigger a closure! Kids hav been told they can wear PE kit Mon/Tues or uniform without tie.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 14/07/2022 17:29

I can’t imagine that they will. It’s all set by local authority so school doesn’t really have the power to announce an early closure. So unless it’s a countrywide announcement I can’t see it happening.

we finish Tuesday lunch time and I can’t imagine there being many children being in on Monday or Tuesday. We’re still be open though. I work in a very small setting with less than 50 pupils.

Starlightstarbright1 · 14/07/2022 17:30

Better not..i have paid for ds to go on a school trip next week

BattenburgDonkey · 14/07/2022 17:32

I don’t ever remember schools closing in heat waves before, not sure why they would this time.

jonesdarcy · 14/07/2022 17:35

I don't think they'll close. They may shut early I guess (heat is really only excessively high in the afternoon).
Ours is seemingly understanding if people are wanting to send kids in for shorter hours or even stay off if it's too much but I doubt they'll close completely.

Edwardoo · 14/07/2022 17:36

I wish they would as I'm worried about my little ones!

PupInAPram · 14/07/2022 17:40

Nope. Our SLT are even debating if uniform changes are necessary!

JustFrustrated · 14/07/2022 17:42

Nope.

My DDs school is still making them wear blazers unless permission is granted to remove in a lesson by lesson basis - they have to wear them during lunch and break.

Many were placed in isolation yesterday for not having blazers with them. To the point so many were in isolation, it was full and others were sent home.

RavenT · 14/07/2022 17:42

I emailed school and asked if children could wear pe kit on Monday and Tuesday.

Got a reply that the senior leadership team had discussed the issue, but feel that school uniform provides more coverage from the sun.

He then said that the children would be kept out of the sun at break and lunchtime.

The irony was clearly lost on him, but ffs, I despair where common sense goes wrt school uniform policy at times. 🙄

Romeiswheretheheartis · 14/07/2022 17:46

No, I work in a school and there was an email from the DfE today saying basically not to close.
We're moving to PE kit and have already abandoned blazers (secondary). Can't believe some schools are insisting on blazers!

Glitterspy · 14/07/2022 17:50

God I hope not. Kids have lost enough school time already.

50mg · 14/07/2022 18:07

No.

It won't be "school" as we know it. It's the end of term, it will be very light touch, no heavy academic work will be done, lots of rules relaxed, but we can't close down the nation's childcare because it's hot.

CallOnMe · 14/07/2022 18:10

No I don’t think they will.

We almost had to close because of covid but are trying to keep it open and I don’t think we’d be trying so hard if there was any way it would close anyway.

My DD is going to an outdoor activity centre next week which is outdoors all day every day and then they’ve got sports day so I am concerned about the heat.

abas · 14/07/2022 18:11

My grandsons are in Italy and, although school finished for the summer a few weeks ago, they’ve had high temperatures for months, and just had to get on with it. Even earthquakes!

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 14/07/2022 18:12

They had better fucking not - I’ve already got 7 weeks of hols to cover

NancyJoan · 14/07/2022 18:14

They’ll be no cooler at home.
