Anyone think they’ll close schools next week?

Heard someone today say schools might be ordered to close from Monday because of the heat. How likely do you think that is?

@Crunchymum we had an attendance letter last week too

hels71 · 15/07/2022 14:48

This country needs to invest in infrastructure so it can cope in the heat or accept that the place falls apart and adjustment have to be made.

but expecting to carry on as normal is absurd.

Why is it absurd, why can't we all work and go to school in hot weather? I get the trains won't be running and infrastructure isn't geared for it but we are talking about schools.

Its 2 days of hot weather, we will all be ok if we are sensible.

No I don't think they'll close the schools nationally. DS has left as he's year 11 but his school is staying open next week. No blazers or ties and PE kit worn on Tuesday.

Some specific schools might take different decisions depending on their circumstances but in general schools will stay open I think.

Our one is not closing. Unless Boris tell them too.

So staying open then!

He wouldn't even close them when covid was ripping through!

No. We got an email telling us to send bathing suits and sun cream in because they have planned a water fight on the field

This is absolutely my favourite answer and says a lot about our current school ethos.

Because this is a creative original idea to deal with heat so close to the holidays. Fun, keeps school sopen, cools everyone off.

I wish more schools would unclench and take approaches liek this. Reminds me of my dds teacher who took everyone out to properly play in the snow one year.

steppemum · 15/07/2022 15:16

more seriously, it depends 100% on your school building and classrooms as to whether or not they are actually better off in large airy classrooms with windows open, or stuck at home.

VincaBlue · 15/07/2022 15:30

Our school is letting us know on Sunday whether it's a full day at school, half day with half day remote learning or full day remote learning, depending on the forecast. (Secondary) Probably based on what they've been advised to do

MarshaBradyo · 15/07/2022 15:34

No not all will, our primary is open

I've heard a few schools doing half day - sending children home at the hottest part of the day seems bonkers!

SpringRainbow · 15/07/2022 15:50

Well, my kids school has sent an email saying send them in, they can wear their PE kits if you would prefer. Hats and sunscreen. Fans in every room. Limited time outside.

With a little bit added at the bottom about the importance of attendance.

I’m not even surprised. They will only close if Boris or someone told them they HAVE to close.

12.25 isn't due to be the hottest part of the day here. They are letting us know on Sunday which it will be depending on forecast

3-4 pm is predicted to be the hottest part of the day here. 4 degrees hotter than midday, so not that bonkers

I hope not, us working parents don't get the time off because of the heat so I'd lose pay just before a six week holiday..wouldn't be ideal. Cool clothes, plenty of water and not too much outside time and they will be fine! X

DfE guidance says not to use fans over 35 because it makes dehydration worse. Not sure why the magic number is 35, but that's what they're telling us.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 15/07/2022 16:21

Well our school os closing at 12.15 on Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday is our last day anyway.

I'm with you on this, they'll be OK with the right precautions

ellieboolou · 15/07/2022 17:22

Just got a call from my manager that our offices are closing Monday & Tuesday, it's a government building with no air con so I'm very grateful, will definitely be keeping kids home now.

Newnormal99 · 15/07/2022 17:30

I have one primary 1 secondary both coming home lunchtime. Youngest has leavers service in the morning in the very old large church with mega thick stone walls. I'm quite looking forward to it.

Infrastructure includes roads, trains, public transport. Loads of children have to use these to get to their schools. Fine if it’s a short distance, not fine if it’s not!

furthermore, a lot of schools are in a terrible state having not been invested in. No air conditioning, crumbling buildings, tiny classrooms. Why should children be made to sit in cramped conditions in 35+ heat?

They are forecasting the highest ever temperatures and for some parts of the country it will be unbearable.

so, we have to accept that hotter weather is going to become a more permanent feature and sort out the infrastructure but in the meantime, it’s a bit stupid to pretend we can carry on without making changes.

familyissues12345 · 16/07/2022 08:37

Our school is closing 12pm Monday, no plan for Tuesday yet - PE kits both days

Other local schools are doing similar, or closing fully both days
