Anyone think they’ll close schools next week?

Heard someone today say schools might be ordered to close from Monday because of the heat. How likely do you think that is?

No. We got an email telling us to send bathing suits and sun cream in because they have planned a water fight on the field

Beebatron · 14/07/2022 18:28

I'm not sure what to do about this. DD has a 50 minute bus ride to school and she has been almost in tears this week when she gets in it has been so hot. Next week says 37 for us on my weather app at the moment! I'd keep her off but her attendance is under the threshold due to quite a bit of sickness and I'll probably get in trouble for it if not fined.

Jmaho · 14/07/2022 18:30

I really hope not. It would mean my daughter missing her leavers assembly and party. My son went into year 7 last September and due to covid missed everything nice in year 6 including any leavers events and a residential trip
My youngest also has her nursery graduation and a party at nursery
They have let then wear PE kit all week and expect they will allow the same next week
They all have hats refillable water bottles and are drenched in sun cream before they go in

They’ll be no cooler at home.

This is not true. My classroom has a plastic roof. The heat has been ridiculous already.

LunaLoveFood · 14/07/2022 18:36

No, our sports day has been cancelled, but that's it.

seaUrchinOne · 14/07/2022 18:36

No, ours have said they can go in their own clothes for the hottest days

Nope. Our SLT are even debating if uniform changes are necessary!

This is just ridiculous!!!

suziejane121 · 14/07/2022 18:55

Unfortunately I very much doubt they will close!.although they should!

Not necessarily true. My house is currently 23 degrees. Our class room was 28 degrees today.

We aren’t closing (yet, perhaps if the warning changes to red). Children can wear home clothes.

One secondary school near us is closing to pupils Mon and Tues but no word from DD1's school. DD2's primary have said they have been strongly encouraged to stay open and they will do, but mufti on Mon and Tues and the most active of the leavers' events moved to Wednesday.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/07/2022 19:03

DS's school won't close, because they awarded themselves a 2 week half term in Autumn, which means they have no leeway in terms of providing the minimum number of days at school.

They may opt for homeschooling on those days however 😩

Which school is that? Our head won't close. She said no other school is closing!

Maireas · 14/07/2022 19:07

Ours isn't closing. The students have been told they can wear shorts.
The head sent round an email to staff telling us to "wear loose, comfortable clothing and keep hydrated". 🤔
No shit.

I don't believe that a secondary school is closing. Sorry.

fizzyfood · 14/07/2022 19:08

No. We've heard from the head today what measures have been put in place at school for the heatwave.

Maireas · 14/07/2022 19:09

They'll be far cooler at home unless their house is badly built, with windows which only open 5cm, no through put of air, and crammed with 29 other sweating teenagers.

cookiecreammpie · 14/07/2022 19:11

My eldest breaks up tomorrow and others break up Tuesday anyway. When are all your kid's schools breaking up?

user1471517095 · 14/07/2022 19:13

These parents wanting the school to close because it's hot, are they the same parents who moaned because schools closed when teachers were sick with Covid? They couldn't get childcare or take a day off work then, so why can they now?

What motivation would you imagine I have for lying?

PeekAtYou · 14/07/2022 19:15

Our secondary allows pe kit when it's over 26 degrees.

I'd be surprised if schools closed considering how many parents wouldn't be able to get the day off and how many days off they had for the pandemic.

I suppose that they could move to online learning but some teachers may be unable to teach if their primary school kids are at home.

Considering that higher temperatures are going to become more common with global warming, any new education secretary should be looking into this immediately even if it means opening school earlier in September to compensate but unlikely that they will take the hint to sort this now rather than when it's too late

Friday.

ellieboolou · 14/07/2022 19:16

I doubt they will, although I think there should be an option that if children can be at home then no fines will be issued or authorised absence.

I appreciate that some are ok with it but my 9yo asd daughter is struggling so much with school and the heat.

Next Tuesday is their summer concert too 🥵

PeekAtYou · 14/07/2022 19:16

By English law don't schools have to provide a certain number of hours of teaching per year ?

Maireas · 14/07/2022 19:19

If anyone knows of any state secondary school closing, can you please tell me which one (pm if necessary) because our head insists that no school is allowed to close. Thanks!

That's just the SLT.
