Anyone think they’ll close schools next week?

Heard someone today say schools might be ordered to close from Monday because of the heat. How likely do you think that is?

Of course they should shut. Or at least only if we have the entire country shut too. Shut ICU, close police stations and prisons. Send everyone home

hedgehogger1 · 14/07/2022 20:28

Nope. I'm also doing a fun day of Bunsen burners so I think heat stroke might be on the horizon

Tiani4 · 14/07/2022 20:29

Ours are saying Pupils need to wear PE kit in on Monday and Tuesday next week (secondary school)

No chance of ours closing.

Lapland123 · 14/07/2022 20:31

Of course school is childcare for primary school aged kids. That is how our society operates. It’s disingenuous to say otherwise

LockAqua · 14/07/2022 20:33

@Ibizamumof4

At the DCs' school, blazers can be removed in lessons if a particular classroom is exceptionally warm at the discretion of the teacher. This works well in my view, as some classrooms aren't that warm.

Blazers have to be worn at all other times- to and from school, break and lunch etc.

They are allowed to remove their jumpers given the current hot weather.

Sounds sensible.
Whereabouts are you?

Surrey.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 14/07/2022 20:35

My primary (central London) is finishing at 1pm on Monday & Tuesday. The catering company have told the kitchen staff that they should do cold lunches (sandwiches etc) for both days. DD2 finishes tomorrow & DD1’s secondary have said absolutely nothing.

SpringRainbow · 14/07/2022 20:37

I will be surprised if my kids school closes. They have a bee in their bonnet about attendance so I think they would have to be forced to close before they actually do.

They haven’t mentioned anything.

No, school is for educating. Precious little of that can be done in near 40 degree temperatures. Frankly, it's bordering on dangerous.
Even childcare facilities cannot operate under certain conditions.
"It's hot for a few days" doesn't even begin to cover what's coming our way.

A580Hojas · 14/07/2022 20:07

They didn't close in all the other years when we've had 30+ temps in July so I doubt they will this year.

I don’t ever remember UK having a temperature of 38-40. For the past week the app I use has been showing this for Tuesday. Monday will be slightly cooler of 35-38.

Really hope the weather people have this wrong. How many people are going to be able to afford to run their fans for a couple of days? It’s not just gas and petrol that has shot up in price

Julystheme · 14/07/2022 20:38

I am a bit worried about DS. He is very fair skinned.

KangFang · 14/07/2022 20:38

No.
I would imagine that the majority of parents would go apeshit if the schools close because they'd have no-one to mind their kids.

x2boys · 14/07/2022 20:39

Individual schools ,might ,I can't imagine it being a national thing .

Keep him at home.

HelloThereObiWan · 14/07/2022 20:42

People are going to be raging on here when the inevitable stories of children presenting to A&E with heat stroke come out next week. Then AIBU will be full of "AIBU to think schools should have closed".

Guarantee it.

Shsios · 14/07/2022 20:42

Ours is giving us the option to collect at 1.30 if we want on both days

rnsaslkih · 14/07/2022 20:43

I think it’ll be down to individual schools/councils. And I think yes, lots will close like a snow day.

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/07/2022 20:44

They won’t. Childcare nightmare.

I wish I could but I’m a teacher myself!

The DWP seem to agree with you Lapland.

Youngest child aged between 5 and 12 years of age
you will be expected to work a maximum of 25 hours a week (or spend 25 hours a week looking for work)
the type of work you look for and the amount of time spent looking for work can fit around your child's normal school hours, including the time it takes to take your child to and from school

LadyCatStark · 14/07/2022 20:46

Well DS’s will be closed as he finishes tomorrow 😂. It’s not that hot up here but DS’s school are still wearing blazers which I think is unnecessary. I’m astounded at classrooms having air conditioning though!

bellsbuss · 14/07/2022 20:47

My sons secondary school is doing remote learning on Tuesday and Wednesday

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 14/07/2022 20:48

We've had an email saying kids are not to wear their pe kit to school but can leave their blazer and tie at home... I don't expect they will close, but they did wisely bring forward sports day to today, it had been due to be held Monday.

Julystheme · 14/07/2022 20:48

I do agree it’s too blithe and dismissive to say that schools are not childcare; they are. I use childcare for my own child so that I can work and it shouldn’t be a problem.

I really do think schools should consider suspending lessons for the afternoon.
