Anyone think they’ll close schools next week?

Heard someone today say schools might be ordered to close from Monday because of the heat. How likely do you think that is?

Of course they won't 😂

Think my dcs secondary school are waiting for advice as to what to do. Its the breaks in the sun, nowhere to sit in the shade and not allowed to stay indoors usually. The walk home in the heat is going to be particularly gruelling and teens don't usually like to be seen being given a lift.
I'll give mine the option to stay off. They won't miss much anyway, real shortage of teachers and loads of lessons have been cancelled or have supply teachers who don't seem to know what the pupils should be doing.

Send them with umbrellas - that's what everyone uses in the tropics when walking in the heat. Well not everyone but plenty of people. It makes a big difference.

@dandelionthistle I think there are many on here that think it is ONLY childcare 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thanks to everyone for the information about schools closing and doing Teams lessons. Vulnerable and key worker children in only. It does seem like the most sensible idea.
Keep cool everyone - if possible!

noblegiraffe · 15/07/2022 07:33

I think the old schools will be fine.

Trust me, dilapidated old school buildings are shit too.

dannydyerismydad · 15/07/2022 07:39

No one is going to be given a hard time if they decide not to send their child in next week.

School attendance stats are already submitted for the year.

If you want to keep your children home, do. If you prefer to send them in, that's fine too.

Yes, excellent advice

RedToothBrush · 15/07/2022 07:57

Kids in school are safer than at home.

At least if they collapse in the heat, there is help.

One of the worst places to be in a heat wave is a tower block when your parents are at work...

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 15/07/2022 07:58

My kids secondary school have allowed them to wear PE kit or no blazer/tie for the last week and for the rest of term - thank goodness for sensible heads.

They are due to have sports day on Monday and Tuesday so interested to see whether that goes ahead - better than being stuck indoors but there’s not much shade around their sports fields.

Oh I didn't know this. So you don't think I'll get in trouble for keeping DD at home? Her attendance isn't great but she has such a long bus ride to and from school and with her sensory issues it would be a complete nightmare for her in such high temps.

Vanillaradio · 15/07/2022 09:04

Why does everyone jump to closing schools. My 8 year ds is lucky enough to be in a new building at school which is well ventilated. He will wear suntan lotion, wear his hat outside and drink lots of water. We have a 5 minute walk to school. He has a lovely and sensible teacher who will look after the kids and will be fine at school (and much better off than the alternative which will be sitting inside playing on his switch whilst I work.)
If that's not the case for you(and I know that for many it won't be) then keep your child off school. As others said the attendance figures are done you won't get fined. And if you are worried say your child has heat rash, a headache or the heat is worsening their pre existing condition. No-one will care this late in the term.
Everyone should make the decision that is best for their own child.

PennineWayinSlingbacks · 15/07/2022 10:17

So far, our secondary school DD has been told to wear a hat and sunscreen and as a big concession - no ties or blazers! BAU on Wednesday though.

gingercat02 · 15/07/2022 10:47

We have just had a text to say PE kit until they break up on Wednesday so no plans to close presumably but it is Y9 so they're quite robust

greenteafiend · 15/07/2022 10:51

JustFrustrated--sounds like it's time for a mass parent-and-pupil rebellion.
Everyone leaves their blazer at home--and refuses to go to isolation. The teachers can't manhandle the kids into the isolation room

Beebatron · 15/07/2022 10:57

I've seen on twitter they might declare a national emergency for Tuesday so maybe they will decide to close.

PaperTyger · 15/07/2022 11:29

A national emergency!

I'm feeling panicked about it!

Beebatron · 15/07/2022 11:40

Yeah it's been declared now, meanwhile my DC's primary are supposedly going ahead with their orchestra night on Monday. A bunch of kids playing woodwind instruments in 37 degree heat. What could go wrong!

VincaBlue · 15/07/2022 12:01

40 degrees predicted in London. 38 degrees where I am.

Anyone think they’ll close schools next week?
Monkeybutt1 · 15/07/2022 12:17

Surely kids are more at risk if they close schools, if their older they will no doubt be out with their mates in the sun! If they are primary they will want to be outside in the paddling pools.
What about the parents that work and can't just have the day off? The country can't come to a standstill because its hot. I work for a Uni and we still have to work, we have exams coming up and graduations next week. We can't tell the students " sorry no graduation for you, its too hot"!
As a nation we book holidays to hot countries with similar temps, and I know its different on holiday with a pool but I am sure no one stays inside all day and avoids the sun for the fear they will shrivel up and die as soon as the rays hit them like Dracula.
Just be sensible, hat, suncream, lots of drinks, don't stay in the sun for prolonged amounts of time.

Hopefully some of the snowflakes will melt in this heat!

This country needs to invest in infrastructure so it can cope in the heat or accept that the place falls apart and adjustment have to be made.

but expecting to carry on as normal is absurd.

PeekAtYou · 15/07/2022 14:21

Just had a message from our state secondary.

School until lunchtime then afternoon lessons via Teams

ellieboolou · 15/07/2022 14:36

Email from primary saying school remains open as per advice from DofE any absences will be treated as unauthorised

PaperTyger · 15/07/2022 14:38

Ellie that's atrocious

Crunchymum · 15/07/2022 14:38

My school sent a letter about the importance of attendance in the last week of term so they really couldn't go back on that? (It was sent today so they are well aware of the forecast)

ellieboolou · 15/07/2022 14:44

@PaperTyger yes I thought so too! My 9yo has asd and is stressing about it already
