The most outrageous way you’ve been fat shamed?

This is in part inspired by a TikTok video and it made me laugh so much that I thought that a similar thread here might get some interesting responses,
keep it civil please obviously post what you want but don’t be attacking posters for their lived experiences

I also think these things really highlight how people who are rude to the overweight are rarely doing it out of concern

Ok I’ll go, my grandma only lets certain people in the family sit on some vintage chairs at the bottom of the garden , as they “aren’t as sturdy as my other chairs” me , husband and my mum are not allowed on the chairs 🙈

I forgot the worst one. My friends dad getting pissed and saying to me all night 'I've got to say something, it's about time someone did' to a bewildered me... Then he sat me down and said you're just so fat, you'd be really attractive otherwise but the thing is, you've just really let yourself down by putting on weight and no one will want you like this. You've got a beautiful face but you're just so fat.

My friend was mortified and said dad we've talked about this so it would seem my weight had been a topic of conversation for them for a while. I was 17/18 so I had no idea how to respond and never told anyone else.

My (male) teacher told me to sit down and shut up and that I was ‘fat as an ox’ in front of the whole class when I was ten years old.

My parents, who had never had weight problems would say that my brother could eat that but I couldn’t ‘as he doesn’t put on weight’.

I think it was because I was 10.5lb at birth and they didn’t want me to ‘get fat like Auntie Liz’ who was my Dad’s sister.

I remember shopping with my mum as a teen and mum saying that clothes wouldn’t fit me if I got any bigger as they stop at size 14. I’m 5ft 8.

Cue lifetime of secret and disordered eating.

@neverfade uggh how gross and creepy! Because at 17 being judged sexually attractive by your friend's dad should be your top concern?...

redruby she was a close friend so every time I went round he probably commented on it after I left. It seemed to offend him somehow. I bumped into him years later on the train and he said ooh have you got something in there to show me. It was a box of tampons. Proper creep.

I don't think that's really about fat-shaming. I would say that's more deep misogynism. If he didn't say anything about weight, he would have chosen something else to attack. It's revolting and I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm not surprised it hurt you. It's around that saying 'women don't realise how much men really hate them'.

I know this is pages ago but this just isn’t true. If the poster had been a tall willowy brunette or a petite “cute” woman he wouldn’t have attacked her using that hateful language and you know it. Yes, he’d have more than likely leered and that is grim in itself, but when you’re fat you’re just fair game. He more than likely wouldn’t have made the effort to roll down the window to call @nancy75 an “ugly cunt” because she isn’t, but tack “fat” onto any insult and suddenly it becomes acceptable to use with impunity.

No I think your example actually reinforces the argument that it’s misogyny. Part of entrenched misogyny is the notion that women must be slim and beautiful. They must also be agreeable and non-threatening to the male ego.
Being fat is a sign of disobeying the rules of misogyny.

The amount of stories on here where women are tiny but still called fat! Just shows how appearance shaming is a way to control and belittle women, even if the insult isn't remotely accurate. Fat is the worst thing a woman can be because apparently fat=unattractive and really, being unattractive (and therefore worthless) is the worst thing that a woman can be.

Not only that, but fat implies greed and loss of self-control around food, and being too idle to exercise..

Many women, especially after having children, or when getting older, gain weight because their metabolism has changed, or they develop conditions which make weight loss very difficult. They also spend a lot of time looking after families, and don't have so much for themselves.

It's got nothing to do with being greedy or lazy

Oh come one. Yes, yes it does. Not always but in many cases - yes.

Amazing how many say it was due to overeating and lack of exercise after losing weight

Mysterian · 19/07/2022 15:10

A child at the nursery I work in told me I've got a baby in my tummy. I don't. I'm 47 year old 6 foot tall man.

Depends what you mean by lazy. I have a fairly active job working with children and since I don't drive I walk everywhere. Then I come home and do housework, laundry, cleaning ,cooking etc. I'm on my feet quite a lot actually. Some might think I'm lazy I won't fit in some specific form of exercise after all that. I'm just knackered and need to be off my feet for a while.
