Just read on a thread that dominos make donations to anti abortion groups 🙄 v annoying as if true I wouldn't buy from them, but my DS is a mega fan.

Who do you boycott and why?

OP posts:
Empra123 · 25/06/2022 09:14

Siemens because of their view that employment law didn't apply to them.

mummabubs · 25/06/2022 09:18

Since I was 14 I've boycotted Nestlé due to their actions regarding infant formula in developing countries. I also boycott all the companies that Nestlé own, such as Body Shop, L' Oreal, Garnier etc.
(Baby Milk Action website has more information for anyone who is interested).

Starbucks.

They refused to give the firefighters at 911 free water and tried to charge them.

Plus the coffee is shit anyway.

Me too!

Have not bought Unit Trusts that hold tobacco or gambling stocks in portfolio. It probably cost us money because it ruled out Terry Smith's funds.
I have supported Palm Oil from West Africa because they are converting existing plantations from other crops.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 25/06/2022 10:25

Any and all MLM companies.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/06/2022 10:36

Danish bacon, because of the factory farming issue.

Ditto any non U.K., non higher welfare pork or bacon, so no Dutch or German, either. It’s cheaper for a reason.

SnappingAtHeels · 25/06/2022 10:43

I boycot a particular takeaway shop in our small village. The owner is from a country i used to live in and their native language is one I am near fluent in, which looking at me would not be something you would immediately expect. He speaks to his staff in their language with a very pleasant tone, but he is saying vile things. Like he will ,kill them the motherfuckers if they don't hurrry up. He will kill their families. They are shit and he will shit on them. You can see from his facial expressions that he is enjoying the menance and power he has over them.

Tesco for their stupid club card pricing. They wanted to charge us double for a meal deal because I’d left my card at home.

I know it’s their choice to offer incentives to cardholders but it feels much more like a non-cardholder fine. So it’s my choice not to go there.

This in spades.

I don’t shop there any more for this reason.

Also try my very hardest not to buy anything made in China but it’s getting harder and harder…🙄

Izzy24 · 25/06/2022 10:45

And I boycott Nestle too.

But looking at this thread I need to update my knowledge of which businesses they own.

AnneElliott · 25/06/2022 10:47

Lush and body shop (for reasons set out above)
BT - for having such awful service. They do keep asking would I like to try them again? Err no - why would I?
NPower for also having shit service when we moved into our house.

pedropony76 · 24/06/2022 18:38

@Snowpatrolling the company doesn’t exist anymore since the lockdowns!! Both that and Garfunkel’s went into administration. F&B was absolute shite anyways so I don’t blame you

@pedropony76 it does still exist we have one in our town that is open. They just closed a lot of them

I don’t boycott anyone - it doesn’t have the desired effect usually. It’s better to engage with companies and seek to change their policies through dialogue.

when I was doing my masters I read about a brand of trainers (adidas I think but must check facts) who were discovered to be using sweat shop labour. Huge outcry in the west and the company pulled out of the factory with poor conditions. Yay! How good for the workers, right?

what actually happened was that the female workforce found themselves suddenly unemployed in an area with no jobs and no way of travelling ‘home’ and needing to support families. Large numbers turned to sex work and their lives were made much much worse.

so no, I don’t support boycotts because stuff like that happens. It’s better to work with companies / suppliers to improve supply chains. It’s why I support lush, for example, because they actively work to help potential suppliers stop testing on animals, rather than some of the other ‘cruelty free’ companies who won’t use a supplier if they previously tested on animals - the supplier therefore has no incentive to change.

This is a great post.

I feel similarly (slightly off-topic) when certain social media hashtag trends spread like wildfire, usually about a political issue in another country that no one actually has any understanding about. It reeks of saviourism.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 25/06/2022 10:57

Also anything promoted by 'Instagram Influencers'....including 'Swan'....'Sweaty Betty' etc.....any company that gives greedy influencers gifted items will not be getting a penny of my money

TheFeistyFeminist · 25/06/2022 11:17

I came here to say Warburtons but I see someone already mentioned it. Generally companies that support Brexit are going to get a wide berth from me.

Am totally gutted about the erosion of womens' rights from places like M&S and John Lewis.

The thing that winds me up most, though, is all the Pride-washing on social media during June, among international companies that aren't Pride-washing in countries with strict laws against homosexuality. Those countries are usually also known for their restrictive practices on women. Multi-national companies indulging in this behaviour usually only trample over womens' rights in countries where women have any real rights to speak of. Madness when you consider the decision making power and spending power women have these days.

When do we take to the streets?

99victoria · 25/06/2022 12:15

Wetherspoons
Nestle
Ryanair
Any big coffee chain
Also, trying to use Amazon less

Just a few that spring to mind immediately

cookielove · 03/07/2022 13:34

Mercedes Benz

For treating my mum like crap, losing £10,000 of her money, accusing her of money laundering and being utterly awful. All while my father was dying in hospital and then after his death making a stressful situation more stressful.

For back story while my father was in hospital one of the things he kept worrying about was the last payment on his car. My mum pushed it though to help stop him worrying so much but Mercedes lost the money and did nothing about it for months.

Specsavers... They actually don't care if you have a problem with your new glasses.

I found specsavers very good when I had a problem with new glasses, they retested my eyes and gave me new ones free of charge

whiteroseredrose · 07/07/2022 00:31

My DPs are boycotting France!

Having holidayed there for decades they have stopped because of the % of votes Le Pen got in the last General Election, and the % that weren't bothered about her getting in so didn't vote.
