He's in Kyiv.

Ffs really? Has he not got enough to be getting on with here?

I’m all for supporting Ukraine but our prime minister needs to be sorting out the current shit show of the country he’s in charge of.

I can’t argue with the silver lining sentiment above but it’s curiously quiet about how much it’s costing us. I don’t trust BJ to not throw money we don’t have at the situation for a couple of photo opportunities.

Blossomtoes · 17/06/2022 16:14

I don’t trust him. On anything except perhaps feathering his nest.

Notonthestairs · 17/06/2022 16:17

I'm sure Ben Wallace was in Kyiv last week.

We have bought some second hand howitzers which are to be spruced up for Ukraine. The state of him. Why can't he wear a suit that fits?

Oh god he's using Ukraine again.

I hope he's offering them something for using them like this

What a way to get out of a Q&A at a by election constituency

Notonthestairs · 17/06/2022 16:24

"Zelensky's service for politicians in trouble is great business, come to Kyiv to make yourself look a statesman, at a cost of just a few billion in essential arms.

And no, this isn't just about today's visitor. And it is also shrewd, even when arrangements must be a pain."

ClaudineClare · 17/06/2022 16:24

Twitter comment sums it up...

Strangely enough, Zelensky didn't seem very surprised, and Johnson came on visit exactly when they had decorated official rooms with the Union Jack

Cornettoninja · 17/06/2022 16:26

Zelensky can keep him. Call it a secondment.

DuncinToffee · 17/06/2022 16:33

I don't think Zelenskyy wants to keep him!

He's not very popular up north where he was due to give a levelling up speech and cancelled last minute

France Germany Italy went to Ukraine yesterday, he doesn't want to be left out

He was the last one to touch him. No Takey-backseys

That's exactly it. It's pure jealousy that they, rather than him as the true successor to Churchill in his deluded mind were getting the attention yesterday Hmm - with the added bonus that it gets him away from Ethicsgate, Partygate, Rwandagate (or should that be ECHRgate?), CostofLivinggate, speaking to the pesky flat capped northerners..... anything I've missed out? Wink

Saucery · 17/06/2022 16:49

“We’re supporting Ukraine” is about all he’s got left, so of course he’s going to go and make a nuisance of himself there at every opportunity.

Sergei Lavrov got one thing right in his interview with Steve Rosenberg yesterday. Our current crop of politicians are just out for themselves rather than representing the people of their country in the way they should.
That probably stung whatever acts as Johnson’s conscience so off he’s trotted with his usual Plucky Brits Standing Up To Global Injustice shite.

itsgettingweird · 17/06/2022 16:50

His core voter base love this and think it’s a display of no-nonsense because they don’t have the skill set to navigate the various paths of consequence they trigger. When things go (badly) wrong they can just turn around and point the finger at those that pointed out the pitfalls before they started and tantrum how everything would have been fine if we’d all just loved them enough.

Great analogy if the situation.

I'll add when it all goes wrong it'll be the remainers fault!

DuncinToffee · 17/06/2022 16:52

The photo is causing a bit of a stir, the date on the folder Johnson is holding reads 5th April.....

Running away again. Ukraine has become his new fridge.

balalake · 17/06/2022 17:19

Actually when you look at the help for Ukraine, it has been very selective. Military support and not much else. Very slow in helping those who had family in the Uk come from Ukraine, for example.

ancientgran · 17/06/2022 17:31

I think he probably had a tantrum yesterday when several EU leaders went to Ukraine, I think they were discussing Ukraine's bid to join the EU. I bet he stamped his feet, screamed and screamed till he was sick and calmed down when he was told his trip was arranged for today.

Notonthestairs · 17/06/2022 17:57

Northern MP has said it was right that Johnson went to ensure the conflict is uppermost in our minds.
Now if Ben Wallace hasn't visited exactly a week ago and if leaders from Europe hadn't visited this week I'd agree with him.
But they did and there was plenty of coverage of those visits.
So I disagree and find the timing suspect.

itsgettingweird · 17/06/2022 18:01

For someone who wants to get as far away from anything with the word Europe in it - Johnson was very quick to attend Ukraine after the EU have reassurance they have a good case for joining.

Unless he went to Ukraine to persuade Zelensky not to!

Notonthestairs · 17/06/2022 18:04

NEW:

Letter from Lord Geidt toughens language on why he quit

He says he “could not be party to advising on potential law breaking”

Admits his resignation letter may have been too cautious

twitter.com/samcoatessky/status/1537841026123149312?s=21&t=Uc_eBoEltmgyZE7SSmERWQ

Tweet links to follow up letter from Geist - makes for interesting reading.
He clarifies that it wasn't simply the steel tariffs that pushed him to resign but that he was in effect being asked to provide cover for deliberate breaches of the Ministerial Code.
There is no way Johnson can afford to get another ethics advisor - they can't tell him what he wants to hear and it's career suicide for anyone daft enough to apply.

DuncinToffee · 17/06/2022 18:17

No wonder he ran, the coward.

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't need Johnson to turn up in Ukraine to remind me of the war there. I seem to manage to remember it fine all the times he isn't there. When he does go there, what is uppermost in my mind is something along the lines of "Haven't they suffered enough?"

Saucery · 17/06/2022 18:21

Indeed it is, on the international stage. But there are other things going on.
