Wouldn't put it past them sooty.

ilovesooty · 24/06/2022 05:37

Oliver Dowden has just submitted his resignation.

ilovesooty · 24/06/2022 05:37

Oliver Dowden has just submitted his resignation.

Wow.

That's a sure sign the tide is turning?

He's one usually wheeled out to defend Johnson's indefensible.

He's clearly had enough of that.

Oliver Dowden has just submitted his resignation.

I just heard that, WOW!

Should be an interesting day.

Cheguevarahamster · 24/06/2022 05:53

Goodness - Dowden gone!
Prosecco is on standby..

Lonelycrab · 24/06/2022 05:59

Waking up to a great result! And now Dowden going too. I remember being at Glasters when Major went, could we be on for a similar treat?

tobee · 24/06/2022 06:02

Hmm. Probably lead to Johnson thinking that Dowden going is all it needs and that will be sorted.

HannahSternDefoe · 24/06/2022 06:03

When DH came in from the kitchen and said "Dowden's quit" my first reaction was "what's be been caught doing?"

balalake · 24/06/2022 06:25

Oliver Dowden going is one small step forward. One of the overpromoted and incompetent, as opposed to those such as Grant Shapps and Priti Patel, the nasty and incompetent.

ClaudineClare · 24/06/2022 06:38

Imagine being the PM and having to scuttle off out of the country (or being made to) during not one but two pivotal by-elections, in the hope that it might boost your party's chance of success.

Imagine that it then doesn't work.

What absolute gobbledegook will Johnson spew today?

Happy Friday everyone!

Peregrina · 24/06/2022 06:45

YES!

I laughed at the quote the BBC attribute to Dowden "someone must take responsibility", because clearly Johnson won't.

I agree.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/06/2022 06:49

Good morning :)

Westfacing · 24/06/2022 06:51

Apparently Bozo's out of the country for another week, at NATO G7 and wotnot, not sure if that's a good or bad thing for him!

Striding the world stage doesn't international leader make.

That reminds me of one morning saying to my friend "what about Gavin Williamson then" she asked what's he done now? "Been given a knighthood!" was the reply.

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 24/06/2022 06:58

Wonderful news to wake up to. Thank you to the voters of Wakefield and Tiverton & Honiton.

As @ilovesooty said (I think it was), it shows the power of tactical voting in our crap first-past-the-post system.

I’m far from a fan of Labour and Lib Dem policies on women; but this Conservative government is corrupt and massively incompetent.

Notonthestairs · 24/06/2022 06:59

Difficult for the men in grey suits to deliver the whiskey and revolver whilst Johnson is out representing the UK.

But I suppose it might leave space for MPs to get their act together before giving him the heave ho.

guinnessguzzler · 24/06/2022 07:02

Happy Friday indeed! Great results! Mr Johnson is going to completely destroy the party, the lying bag of lies. It would be a joy to watch if it didn't have real life implications.

AmaryIlis · 24/06/2022 07:08

Tiverton is the biggest by-election loss by a government ever. Given that the only reason for supporting Johnson is supposed to be that he's such a winner, surely light is beginning to dawn even amongst his former supporters? If I were a Red Wall MP, I'd certainly be looking for a new job.

Notonthestairs · 24/06/2022 07:10

There is only one person to blame for the Wakefield result.

The main reason that Wakefield's swing voters chose Labour was "Boris Johnson tried to cover up partygate, and lied to the public", followed by "Boris Johnson is not in touch with working-class people".

And our focus groups suggested the same was true in Tiverton and Honiton too.

Apparently in Wakefield the spin is “Labour should have won by more”. 🙄

Well they should have done. Each party in government will go through mid-term blues. I am absolutely confident that the Conservatives can turn things around and at the next GE election swings to Labour will be limited to under 10% and to the Lid Dems to under 25%.

Cornettoninja · 24/06/2022 07:11

One more to the list of the public making a clear statement to BJ personally - that he will ignore again.

I feel for the disenfranchised tories who imagine their protest vote might be a boot up the arse for the tories - it won’t. They’ve just joined the ranks of those not worth listening to.

It’s a great result in terms of black and white facts but since when did BJ and his cabinet pay any attention to them?

You clearly haven't met my and some other Tory MPs. How does the saying go,?the lights on, but no ones at home.

Roussette · 24/06/2022 07:15

What an evening and night. Question Time was a nightmare with a concerted effort by Fiona Bruce to keep interrupting Mick Lynch and a lot of ignorant, ininformed awful Tory voters in the audience spouting absolute bollocks.

I went to bed cross, I'm not sleeping well and woke at 4/5am to check bi-election results, and slept like a baby till now!

Fantastic result, thank you Devon and Wakefield. You did us proud. I listened to the acceptance speeches by the Labour and Lib Dem new MPs and they were brutal !

Oliver Dowden was the one due to defend this on the breakfast shows this morning and rather than defend the indefensible... he's resigned. (don't know that at all, but nothing would surprise me!!). He has continually defended BJ on TV... well... the chickens have come home to roost now...

Cornettoninja · 24/06/2022 07:15

ok, well good luck. Breaking from the ECHU is going to be a tough one to break without publicly trashing human rights.

Personally I’m not sure BJ and co. can go a full calendar month without creating a headline that reveals what an appalling bunch of morally vacuous lint rollers they are.
