Scones are supposed to be sweet. What monster came up with that combination?

They are splendid and I say that being a firm lover of the OG scone.

I love cheese scones and make them occasionally. However I have been making cheese shortbread after trying them at a friend's house. I was surprised to find they were only 3 ingredients too.

Mmmm, that sounds great. What quantities/ratio of ingredients do you use? Thank you.

Please do enlighten us!

A warm buttered cheese scone is the most delicious thing to have with soup for lunch.

PussGirl · 14/06/2022 17:45

They need to be properly cheesy - lots of really strong cheese in the mixture.

I prefer plain scones though.

Gingerkittykat · 14/06/2022 17:48

Scone Rankings
1 Cherry scones
2 Cheese scones fresh from the oven with a slice of butter. I add parmesan to the top to give them extra oomph.
3 Plain scones with loads of jam and cream.

Fruit scones can get in the bin.
I'm undecided about all the artisan scones with weird ingredients and have never plucked up the courage to try them.

Aworldofmyown · 14/06/2022 17:50

YABU. Warm cheese scone, butter and chilli jam 😋

Ugh, they put cheese on bloody everything these days. Cauliflower, chicken, chips... I'm sure if I looked hard enough I'd find a cheese soup.

Here is cheese soup which sounds like a heart attack in a bowl and too much even for a hardened cheese lover like me.

They have always had broccoli and stilton type soups but I've never seen just melted cheese and butter made into a soup.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 14/06/2022 17:55

I agree with you but at the same time would bite your hand off to get one.

stillvicarinatutu · 14/06/2022 17:59

Cheese scones are the only scones !

30 seconds in a microwave , butter ....omg
Savoury over sweet any day!

IncyWincyGrownUp · 14/06/2022 18:12

Cheese or plain scones only for me please. I don’t like dried fruit, so pointless having sweet ones.

I also don’t give a fuck how you choose to say the damn word.

NigelWithTheBrie79 · 15/06/2022 09:38

For those that asked. This is the recipe sent by my friend. (I also add a teaspoon of English Mustard so 4 ingredients really. I also use more cheese on top).
150 g self-raising flour
100 g salted butter, chilled and cubed
75 g grated cheddar cheese
Instructions
1
Preheat the oven to 200°C (fan) and line your baking tray with parchment.
2
In the mixing bowl, crumble the grated cheese with your fingers to make it as fine as possible. Remove 25g and set to one side.
3
Add the flour, followed by the butter into the remaining cheese, then bring it together with your fingers until a dough is formed.
4
Tip the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it out to a thickness of about 5mm, then cut out rounds using the cutter or alternative.
5
Place onto the baking tray, then sprinkle each biscuit using the remaining 25g of crumbled cheese.
6
Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden, then allow to cool before serving

NigelWithTheBrie79 · 15/06/2022 09:41

Also. They have never, not once, ever been allowed to cool down before eating. They last all of 5 minutes with my greedy husband and kids.

What is a cherry scone if not a fruit scone? 🤔

Whatwouldnanado · 15/06/2022 10:13

I saw a recipe for chocolate scones somewhere recently.
My gran used to make fab cheese scones and taught me to love them hot with butter and Roses lime marmalade.

Jackanackanory · 15/06/2022 10:14

@NigelWithTheBrie79 thanks!

As opposed to scones with currants, raisins or sultanas in them. I can manage raisins, but sultanas are revoltingly squishy!

BrieAndChilli · 15/06/2022 11:40

cheese scones that are actually cheesy are amazing with chilli jam. I bought some M&S ones recently and they were barely cheesy!

I made chocolate ones for the jubilee and wasnt impressed. I'd rather have a brownie or something.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/06/2022 17:28

They can’t put enough cheese in to make them really cheesy, imo, @BrieAndChilli - you need to put waaaay too much in, so they can’t hold their shape but taste gorgeous. I tried some Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference cheese scones, and they weren’t particularly cheesy either - I didn’t think they were worth it, to be honest.

I really need to make some cheese scones.

Unprecedentedusername · 15/06/2022 19:00

You can make them in the air fryer very quickly. Love them for breakfast.

does anyone remember the Cranks cheese topped roll with cress??

ErrolTheDragon · 15/06/2022 21:30

I think your problem, SDTG, is that you can't make anything that's actually as cheesy as cheese (well, apart from a cheese).

ThreeRingCircus · 15/06/2022 21:57

My local café does a normal cream tea with clotted cream and jam but also a savoury cream tea with cheese scone, cream cheese and chilli jam. It is THE BOMB. 😍

That is just pure Zen, @ErrolTheDragon !

IloveJudgeJudy · 16/06/2022 13:33

I haven't rtft but have to agree, OP. My friend did a lovely cream tea for us all recently but she made some sundried tomato and basil or oregano scones. 🤢. Obviously, I ate mine and said it was delicious as she'd gone to all the trouble, but just no. The plain and fruit ones she'd also made were delicious.

National Trust cafes have amazing cheese scones with a peppery aftertaste

I use the National Trust recipe, it does have mustard powder in and they are delicious
