Cheese scones are an abomination.

Scones are supposed to be sweet. What monster came up with that combination?

OP posts:
Rosehugger · 13/06/2022 15:14

I think even plain non-cheese scones are supposed to be not overly sweet, the sweetness comes from the jam and cream. Overly sweet, cakey fruited scones are the abomination IMO.

KirstenBlest · 13/06/2022 15:21

Who says that scones are supposed to be sweet.

They can also be savoury.

How do you pronounce it though??

Wow, OP, it seems you woke up this Monday morning and chose violence.

Cheese scones are bloody marvellous. Scones with dried fruit in them are the real evil.

Sort yourself out.

My thoughts exactly!

plain scones are perfect with cream and jam.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 13/06/2022 15:29

Cheese scones with chives fresh out the oven and cold salted butter. Add Heinz tomato soup and it’s a meal for the gods 😋😋

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 13/06/2022 15:31

INCORRECT

I trust you pronounce to rhyme with gone..?

Otherwise put yourself in the shed and have a word with yourself.

popcorndiva · 13/06/2022 15:36

Oh I love a cheese scone fresh out of the oven with lots of butter. But I equally love a cheese hot cross bun.

Must remember I am on a diet and not go and make some now !!!

Eightiesfan · 13/06/2022 16:10

Wrong, wrong, wrong! They are super delicious and I much prefer them to the sweet ones.

Crikeyalmighty · 13/06/2022 16:25

@Hopeful16 Yep- that's a magic combo!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/06/2022 16:28

One I had at a NT cafe was certainly an abomination - if it had been merely shown a piece of cheese, that was it.
Good ones are delish! Ditto my very very cheesy cheese straws! A bit of a faff to make, though - always have to make masses since they vanish so fast.

DucksInTheGarden · 13/06/2022 16:33

I've never tried one. I obviously need to. Anyone got a good recipe so I can decide which side of this very high and spiky fence I'm on?

sueelleker · 13/06/2022 16:36

CaramelJones · 13/06/2022 14:50

I agree that fruit scones are awful but I can see the logic in putting them in scones but cheese and scones shouldn't be in the same room let alone the same recipe and don't get me started on those of you who compound the horror by adding Marmite.

Not Marmite, but my Be-Ro recipe has mustard in it. I love them buttered for breakfast sometimes; think I'll go and make a batch now!

Shade17 · 13/06/2022 16:37

Fruit scones or nothing!

TheClitterati · 13/06/2022 16:40

Cheese scones are delicious & a fav winter lunch with soup.

they are completely different to plain scones or sultana scones, which are also delicious.

Date scones are the devils food & should be banned.

TheClitterati · 13/06/2022 16:41

here you go @DucksInTheGarden

feel free to add more cheese & use mature/extra mature

National Trust cafes have amazing cheese scones with a peppery aftertaste

Yes, they're amazing!

sueelleker · 13/06/2022 16:48

6oz SR flour
pinch of salt and pepper
1oz butter or margarine
3oz grated cheese (or more if liked)
1 med.egg
2 tbsp milk.
Mix flour & seasonings, rub in fat. Stir in cheese, reserving a little for the top. Mix to a soft dough with egg and milk.
They recommend rolling it out and cutting circles, but I just pat it out in a round and score it.
Brush with egg and milk, and sprinkle cheese on top.
Bake at 220 C /425 F /Gas Mark 7, for 10-15 minutes.

flowerexpress · 13/06/2022 16:49

I'm the other way round - I like the cheese ones but not the sweet ones so much. My mum does make amazing cheese scones though :)

sueelleker · 13/06/2022 16:50

Sorry, missed out the mustard-half a teaspoon of powder. If I haven't got any powder, I use ready mixed.

Thinkingblonde · 13/06/2022 16:50

I like them toasted.

iklboo · 13/06/2022 16:52

Oh but they're gorgeous - you just need to think of it as the 'main course' savoury before you dig in to the cream tea sweet ones for pudding.

canyoutoleratethis · 13/06/2022 16:52

RedCarsGoFaster · 13/06/2022 14:44

Nooo, cheese scones are a thing of beauty! Use them instead of bread with soup or instead of corn bread with a chilli.

They do not, however, belong anywhere near a cream tea.

I feel that me and you were meant to be life long friends!!

carefullycourageous · 13/06/2022 16:52

Pretty much all scones are delicious, cheese, fruit, rich, apple, buttermilk etc etc etc.

Vampirethriller · 13/06/2022 17:02

All scones are good but cheese can be amazing. I make Stilton and walnut scones with pumpkin seeds on top. Fresh from the oven with butter on. Bloody lovely.

RaraRachael · 13/06/2022 17:02

I LOVE cheese scones. That's what I usually have when I'm out for coffee.
Now fruit scones - they truly are an abomination 😕
