Scones are supposed to be sweet. What monster came up with that combination?

Oh no, OP.. NO! NO! NO! Get thee gone, you heretical beast!!!

Cheese scones are the most sublime food of the gods!

Made properly, they are so divine, to the point where I actually rank them.

Best ever, are to be found at an Inn on Lindisfarne.

No2 ... my friend's.

No3 ...Delia's

Please don't bother with National Trust ones.
Or any supermarket's freshly baked ones , including M&S .

( Skulks off to mumble about what a terrible state this country's in. )

lljkk · 13/06/2022 17:12

I had some gorgeous cheese+pepper scones the other day.

I don't like the sweet ones. Just... irk. So deficient in actual flavour.

Chooksnroses · 13/06/2022 17:13

They don't go with clotted cream and jam....

Babdoc · 13/06/2022 17:15

Damnit, OP, now I have to make some cheese scones! You’ve just reminded me how much I love them. It will be all your fault when my trouser waistband is even tighter than already is. Grin

WildCherryBlossom · 13/06/2022 17:20

Freshly made cheese scones rock!

I think they might be one of my children's favourite memories of lockdown. Fresh batches of cheese scones straight out of the oven for lunch.

darisdet · 13/06/2022 17:20

You're right. They're horrible.

What are you even supposed to put on them? A bit of butter or something

WildCherryBlossom · 13/06/2022 17:21

Lots of salty butter and a big bowl of homemade soup

darisdet · 13/06/2022 17:21

Also agreeing with fruit scones being an abomination .

thenewduchessoflapland · 13/06/2022 17:27

We make them with no sugar,a strong mature cheese and mustard powder served with butter.

They make a nice lunch or a good snack if your quite hungry.

Happygirl79 · 13/06/2022 17:27

My home made scones are gorgeous. Best warm with butter. I live alone so I have to freeze some otherwise I would eat the whole batch. I always add much more cheese than in the bero recipe

toooldtocarewhoknows · 13/06/2022 17:27

Cheese scones made with chives and a little mustard, eaten with slices of mature cheddar and pickle on the side. It doesn't get much better.

Sweet scones are a poor comparison Grin

LivingDeadGirlUK · 13/06/2022 17:30

Your Wrong OP :) Cheese scones are amazing, with butter and chutney on!

CaramelJones · 13/06/2022 17:32

It's definitely pronounced to rhyme with gone.

I'm sorry to see that you so many of you have been led astray by the evil cheese scones. I hope that you all recover from your Stockholm Syndrome soon and see them for the abominations that they truly are.

Best seller in my coffeeshop, and I get to eat the wonky one every morning, fresh out of the oven!

LavenderfortheBees · 13/06/2022 17:44

YABmassivelyU!

I make them with parmesan and sharp cheddar inside and red leicester on top. Also add a pinch of mustard powder and a pinch of cayenne pepper to lift the cheesy goodness flavour.

Serve with: a cheese board, tomato and basil soup, red onion marmalade, marmite, as a bacon sarnie etc.

Heaven.

2bazookas · 13/06/2022 17:44

Just hand them over, I'll eat yours.

KohlaParasaurus · 13/06/2022 17:53

I'll swap your cheese scones for the pack of cherry scones I picked up in the supermarket by mistake. Now there's wrong! Probably perfectly edible with a slather of butter, but wrong. I like cheese scones warm, but not cold and doughy.

My dad would agree with you about the cheese scones. As a teenager I made a batch of cheese scones, offered Dad one, and watched him putting butter and jam on it and taking a big bite.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 13/06/2022 17:54

Nope!
Scone = lovely
Cheese = lovely
Scone + cheese = 😬
As for scone + fruit 😱

Plain scone + clotted cream + strawberry jam = 😘
Plain scone + any other sort of cream + any other sort of jam = 🙄(but I still would if that's all that was put in front of me)

Oh, and it's pronounced like "stone" not "gone" ... and clotted cream first of course😉

AuntieMarys · 13/06/2022 18:00

I'm not a fan of scones. I like cream.and jam.though

anotherneutralname · 13/06/2022 18:07

Scone - joy
cheese - moderate happiness
Both together - disappointment

Gails cherry chocolate scones are an adequate temporary substitute if you’ve no access to cream and jam for a plain scone.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/06/2022 18:13

Plain scones are ok, cheese scones (so long as they are cheesy enough) are delicious.

ScrubUpWellInMySundayBest · 13/06/2022 18:14

Cheese scones are horrible, plain or fruited for me definitely. I like a cherry scone too. I don’t like savoury muffins either, it just doesn’t work for me.

So much wrong with this 😞

A cheese scone with smoked ham and a hefty pinch of black pepper over the butter (the scone will be made with English mustard powder) is just perfect

Also: SCONNN not scown

Memyselfandfood · 13/06/2022 18:33

They’re my favourite

Rubyroseyposey · 13/06/2022 18:43

I love them, but only homemade. Sadly, I am alsl lazy so not a regular thing 😅🤣
