Cheese scones are an abomination.

Scones are supposed to be sweet. What monster came up with that combination?

I think Candida must be a southerner. Up here in Scotland, (and for all my Geordie relatives), they’re pronounced sconn, to rhyme with won.

BalloonsAndWhistles · 13/06/2022 18:53

They just sound horrid which is why I’ve never bothered trying one. I’m usually up for trying most things but original with jam and cream for me please thanks!

A slightly warm cheesy cheese scone with lovely unsalted butter with slices of cheese and thinly sliced sweet tomato is a joy, accompanied by a pot of good tea or a strong black coffee. I thank you!! 🌹

AgentMagenta · 13/06/2022 19:05

Ugh, they put cheese on bloody everything these days. Cauliflower, chicken, chips... I'm sure if I looked hard enough I'd find a cheese soup.

Geranium1984 · 13/06/2022 19:07

Delicious!! Especially cheese and chives with lots of butter... mmmmmm.
Anything with cheese is the best. Id take a savoury over a sweet scone any day 😋

I think even plain non-cheese scones are supposed to be not overly sweet, the sweetness comes from the jam and cream. Overly sweet, cakey fruited scones are the abomination IMO.

Yep! 👏🏻 👏🏻

Newestname002 · 13/06/2022 19:12

My mum LOVES cheesy cheese scones. However I have to watch out - she's likely to put peanut butter on them! 😮

Broccoli and Stilton?
Not keen myself, but it exists.

Newestname002 · 13/06/2022 19:58

Mmmmm - cauliflower cheese!! I've stopped buying prepared ones as they're never cheesy enough nor mustardy enough. Mine is delicious! 🌹

A580Hojas · 13/06/2022 20:00

Cheese scones are my craving. I can rarely think of anything I'd rather eat. I avoid them because of my weight, but I'd have a cheese scone every day if my body could take it.

stuntbubbles · 13/06/2022 20:02

I made Hugh Fearnley-Whatsisface’s cheese and sage scones the other day and they were a delight. Also did a batch of plain ones and they were lovely too, and not really sweet? 30g of sugar vs 220g of flour, it’s really just a smidge of sugar. They’re not meant to be sweet, they’re meant to be airy and light and a conduit to jam and a fucktonne of clotted cream.

The correct answer is obviously: lots of scones of lots of varieties.

My family think im a dirty bitch because i LOVE cheese scones with butter and raspberry jam......

Sortilege · 13/06/2022 20:04

Oh bloody hell, you ungrateful sods. I can’t have gluten plus I’m low carbing. I DREAM about cheese scones. 🤗

I've got a recipe card for cheese and corn chowder! Basically it's a thin cheese sauce with sweetcorn in it. Lovely.

Your family are correct

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/06/2022 09:56

This thread has made me itch to make some - with mustard powder, a pinch of cayenne and chives - I’ve got some of those in the garden. But I can’t until I’m home again after grandchild-sitting for the next 36 hours. No point in making them here, since the fussy little GDcs are highly unlikely to eat them.

And dh will be away, so I’ll have to scoff them all myself. 🙂🐷

I put mustard powder and cayenne in my very very cheesy cheese straws, too - they always vanish PDQ.

Mmmmm!!!!!
Cheese scones ❤

What madness is this? Any sweetness comes from the jam - no sugar in the scone, surely?

AnImaginaryCat · 14/06/2022 11:36

carefullycourageous · 13/06/2022 16:52

Pretty much all scones are delicious, cheese, fruit, rich, apple, buttermilk etc etc etc.

Correct.

I mean let's analyse the OP, doesn't like cheese scones, doesn't like fruit scones. Also doesn't like Marmite.

Concerning these people walk amongst us.

darisdet · 14/06/2022 11:42

I must confess that I had never tried cheese scones, but I've always found the idea of them off putting.

A poster, who posted just after me, mentioned having them with soup and salted butter. I think I might buy some (I cannot bake!) to try next week. We often have cheese topped rolls with soup, so the scones must be worth a try?

Leiths Baking Bible, Mary Berry, Delia Smith, Good Housekeeping, all call for a modest amount of sugar in their scones: 30g or 3tbsp type amounts for 8 scones. It’s not cake-level sweetness but adds something, otherwise it’s a dumpling.

NigelWithTheBrie79 · 14/06/2022 12:41

I love cheese scones and make them occasionally. However I have been making cheese shortbread after trying them at a friend's house. I was surprised to find they were only 3 ingredients too.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/06/2022 12:42

Cheese scones are delicious, made the way I make them, with far too much cheese in them! They lose all structural integrity, and become cheese slumps rather than cheese scones, but they taste absolutely amazing!

TonTonMacoute · 14/06/2022 12:53

Love cheese, love scones (I live in Cornwall, jam then cream).

Cheese scones!? Not sure, they sound revolting and I've never tried one.

However, I was helping out at a charity coffee morning/bring and buy sale once and all anyone wanted was sodding the little bags of 4 cheese scones!

Sugar adds something to the scone, I don’t know how but scones without are tasteless lumps of nothingness. I add sugar to cheese scones but if its Leicester cheese add a little less as R/L Is sweet IMO.
One tip when making any type is to bake at 200 to 210c. Take the tray out half way through cooking time and turn it around.
