Words MN has made you dislike

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 07/06/2022 20:23

Just reading through a couple of threads, and realised that, due to their (over)use on MN, there are some words that now make my teeth itch.

Words like 'gentle' (I see it as quite PA) and 'yummy' (always makes me think of some Lycra clad female jogging with a pushchair for some reason).

Am I alone in this, or do others have words they've come to dislike too?

Mom

It's mum!!

What a small, narrow life you must live, @whatsnewpussycat34 — have you never heard what people outside your town call their mothers?

ExtremelyDedicated · 07/06/2022 22:01

Overdone and overused.

Cookiecrumble22 · 07/06/2022 22:06

I can't stand DP DH. Especially when he's being a shit bag and want to talk about it here.

Breed/breeding. Referring to people who have had children.

Can't you just move

ShowOfHands · 07/06/2022 22:07

I can't bear all the chucking, throwing and popping. Just chuck a casserole in the oven and throw a salad in a bowl before popping to the shop for "bits". It's all so affected. And all the infantile yum and chocs type of language.

The new and ubiquitous "throw this one back" seems to be replacing the ever annoying row of ducks.

Abusive and neglectful men are always "amazing" as well eg "he does fuck all house work and is shagging my best mate but he's an amazing dad".

Picky tea.

My SIL says this in real life. "Oh, we're just having a picky tea tonight."

Makes me want to scream

Report her - another of my unfavourites.

AffIt · 07/06/2022 22:17

Narcissist / narc etc.

Every single bloody thing on here is 'do you think he/she/DDog is a narc?'

Narcissism is a complicated and actually relatively rare psychiatric disorder. It's not just a thing that anybody you might happen to dislike or not get on with suffers from.

Overuse of the superlative 'super'.

'Gift', 'gifted' or 'gifting' instead of present, gave or giving.

And the very worst of all, 'sat' or 'stood' when it should be sitting or standing, when used in the context of present tense - even professional writers and broadcasters are now committing this appalling crime and, sadly, it is a growing menace.

Yes, thank you!! I can't stand the use of "gifted" and "gifting". I swear this has crept in in the last few years. It sounds so pretentious and unnatural, like you're trying to dress up giving someone a present!

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 07/06/2022 22:18

Bin someone off. (What absolute nonsense some people spout. I've no idea what it even means.)

Harissa · 07/06/2022 22:19

Insist
Detest

Hawkins001 · 07/06/2022 22:23

No specific words come to mind.

toastedcat · 07/06/2022 22:24

This is more of a spelling gripe but can't believe how many people write "women" when they mean "woman".

Eg "As a women I can't believe how..."

It's all over the place and it reaaaallly gets to me.

ellieboolou · 07/06/2022 22:25

Teeth itch is awful but worse is boils my piss - both sounds like teenager would use them

Vulva - no one in real life, including doctors, nurses, gynaecologists and midwife's have ever referred to my vagina as a vulva
*
pack up*, it's a packed lunch (we'll it is in my books)

Lots more but I'm off to find some picky bits to eat 🤣

ellieboolou · 07/06/2022 22:27

Ah and also noone when it's no one winds me up too

ladydimitrescu · 07/06/2022 22:34

Shaking and crying
Shrieking.

beeeeeeeeeeeeeeee · 07/06/2022 22:34

Paddington hard stare.
Head tilt.
Tinkly laugh.
Do grown women really pretend to be a fictional bear.

My 5 year old used to give me a hard stare like Paddington - and tell me exactly what he was doing!
This just brought back the memories Bear

KohlaParasaurus · 07/06/2022 22:38

A lot of the annoying words aren't Mumsnet exclusives.

I'm grateful to Mumsnet for giving me "darked on", "cocklodger", and all the rows of ducks.

GrazingSheep · 07/06/2022 22:40

Unmumsnetty hugs.
You vipers.

HumptyDumpty2022 · 07/06/2022 22:41

Not a word but the biscuit emoji gives me the rage!

roarfeckingroarr · 07/06/2022 22:43

Entitled. Privilege.

Yawn.

LisaSimpson77 · 07/06/2022 22:44

Oh and "screamed" used to indicate any level of slightly raised voice.

HangingOver · 07/06/2022 22:57

Food ones mainly
Choc
Veg
Manage (I could only manage..... )
Plated
Offered
Helped herself to
All washed down with (aaargh shut up shut up shut up)
Tucking in

Also hate San Pro. Sounds like something matron would say.

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 07/06/2022 23:00

Hear hear to the word 'super', as in 'I was super excited'.

No. Just no.

Ha ha I read the title and came on to say "gentle"
The word now makes me want to smack people non-gently round the chops!!

Also, "reached out" is quite a specific phrase but now gets used to mean "contacted" in any form which irritates the hell out of me.

And finally (for now) "lips"
Which is a completely bizarre one to hate and I can offer no logical explanation 🤷🏿‍♀️

And yes, 'reach out' always makes me envisage a Kate Bush-esque woman singing AT someone
