Well there we go then.

The interesting point is that you could never imagine the points made by Jesse Norman even occurring to most of the current cabinet, let alone being formulated so clearly. It illustrates yet again that Johnson either doesn't dare to have anyone with a brain close to him, or that no-one with a brain will work with him.

Roussette · 06/06/2022 08:35

Damn damn damn, I've got people coming round tonight (fans of BJ too!) so will have to look to this thread for updates, because cheering this on whilst they are here might not go down too well!

6pm vote of no confidence

I heard result would be between 8 and 9pm, does anyone know? My guests might be gone by then (sorry not being me me me here, just curious!)

Tom Larkin

Confidence vote TODAY

^So: 46 MPs questioning PM's leadership
30 calling for him to go immediately
19 confirmed letters - Jesse Norman's this morning the most damning yet.^

Clear that the private numbers are plenty worse for the PM than what we can see in public.

Passes the popcorn.

I do love a good Tory Party Leadership Election. There's more drama than an Eastenders Bank Holiday Special. I wonder if we will get that or an anti climatic end to a shit storyline.

"Quite an important set text for today from when this last happened under May… from now locked account of @CJCHowarth ERG researcher… on how he found a dusty copy of the 1922 rules & worked out how they could be changed from guaranteeing a years safety"

Method to allow a further vote within a year. This might come back to bite them!

the80sweregreat · 06/06/2022 08:40

They said 6 at first , then it changed , it is now between 6 and 8pm
Boris is out in a high vis.

Just seen a tweet saying last time, result was about 9pm.

the80sweregreat · 06/06/2022 08:41

Who would take over though ?
I bet he wins it.

Notonthestairs · 06/06/2022 08:41

I think they haven't announced when the results will be made public as yet - details to follow.

Shame the 1922 Committee get to see names when this is all over - I'm sure that has an impact on an anonymous vote.

May regret this later but I suspect vote against Johnson may be larger than expected. Lot of MPs have had to swallow, and publicly defend, an awful a lot of shameful nonsense for more than six months. They know PM’s no longer popular. They know he won’t change. Dam may burst.

DuncinToffee · 06/06/2022 08:44

BBC Nick Eardley reporting

No 10 on confidence vote: “Tonight is a chance to end months of speculation and allow the government to draw a line and move on, delivering on the people’s priorities. The PM welcomes the opportunity to make his case to MPs.”

I hope he wins it Grin as do Labour

HeritageVegetable · 06/06/2022 08:52

Will the vote be in person? Does the MP being investigated for serious sexual offences get a vote?

the80sweregreat · 06/06/2022 08:52

I think he'll win and limp on too

Sir Graham Brady says the 1 year rule could be changed but there will be a ‘period of grace’ if PM survives vote this evening

prettybird · 06/06/2022 08:53

Brady said that there would be a procedure for proxy votes for those that can't back it back to London.

Its amazing how they manage to do proxy voting for a tory leadership but still block proxy voting for Parliament whenever they can.

Notonthestairs · 06/06/2022 08:55

He may well win - how many on the payroll (170+?). How many jobs/promotions are being promised to MPs? I'm sure their phones are buzzing.

Regardless it will wound and depending on scales may well boost rebels further.

Wonder how long that period of grace will be.

Agree he's an asset to Labour!

But is that necessarily within his control? There's an obvious scenario where Johnson gets through this time around but is severely weakened, carries on the same way (because he doesn't know any other way of conducting himself) with the polls ever worsening, and Brady's hand gets forced because he still refuses to resign.

DuncinToffee · 06/06/2022 09:06

Beth Rigby

So, now to the vote. Rebels needs 180 votes to unseat the PM. There are 160-170 MPs on payroll (although this a secret ballot). But for any sitting PM, a win can be a Phyrric victory which fatally damages (Thatcher was out days later, Theresa May 6 months, Major in an election)

Just been sent this. The ‘lines to take’ briefing. ‘Extremely harmful to launch a distracting, divisive & destructive leadership contest’ a ‘destructive civil war & leadership contest would ‘Graf on for months alienating voters’ PM a “proven election winner”

Something to watch out for on here too, bingo cards at the ready Wink

Surely a man who has the single handed charisma to win elections also can single handedly lose them? A party cannot put all its identity in one person.
