Could he do his greased piglet act and call a snap election? This is risky though, because he might well get voted out, even if he finds a 'safe' seat.

That would be spectacularly stupid. How badly does he want to lose?

"Tory MPs who want Johnson out have this weekend been circulating a briefing document setting out why. It warns the party is on course to lose the next election & concludes “the only way to end this misery, earn a hearing from the British public… is to remove Boris Johnson as PM”

In random conversations I’ve had this weekend there’s been some mutterings of incredulity about ‘why’s he banging on about imperial measurements when there’re more important things going on’ from a crowd that’s been previously very much bored with partygate wanting to focus on other issues and in the camp of ‘they’re all lying toe rags this is stupid’.

He’s not satisfying many right now.

Cornettoninja · 05/06/2022 18:59

I agree but BJ is a gambler. If he was down to his last tenner he’d put it all on red and cross his fingers.

“The Conservative Corbyn”. Never saw that coming.

Peregrina · 05/06/2022 19:01

The tame Tory didn't hear any booing, but then all PMs get booed, Blair, Thatcher.

Yes, they do when they are on their way out!

Yeah it's a never ending surprise how some people don't hear what's clearly there in the audio.

Why not just own it. Accept it happens.

In this case I think we can be fairly sure it's because the VONC and the ratings show that this is a genuine feeling of the majority - not a minority who can be ignored as a subset of the population who don't agree.

Blossomtoes · 05/06/2022 19:16

Because their default is lying.

In advance of any move against Johnson a timely reminder from Marina Purkiss about what happened after May successfully fought off VONC.

"Jacob Rees-Mogg, who led calls for the confidence vote, said losing the support of a third of her MPs was a "terrible result for the prime minister" and called on her to resign.
Brexit-backing Tory MP Mark Francois told the BBC it was "devastating" that more than half of backbenchers not serving in the government had abandoned the prime minister.
"In the cold light of day when people reflect on that number - 117 - it's a massive number, far more than anyone was predicting. I think that will be very sobering for the prime minister. I think she needs to think very carefully about what she does now."

I think they forget that everything is recorded for posterity these days.

I think more they just forget what they say, because all they do is say what suits their agenda at that time, with no thought to the future or any principles.

Just checking in for an interesting week

itsgettingweird · 06/06/2022 07:49

Just caught on bbc that a VONC could come as in a few hours.

I wasn't really listening and didn't catch the following conversation but certainly that sentence pricked my ears up!

Zonder · 06/06/2022 07:52

Amol Rajan said just now on Today that Brady has raised the game by no longer taking phone calls. Raised the game by keeping out of the game!

Another letter in - this time from Jesse Norman (Hereford MP)

twitter.com/Jesse_Norman/status/1533699235417403393?s=20&t=E_KEPzR3FrBO2RBIUhCaSw

ClaudineClare · 06/06/2022 07:58

That is an excellent letter. It gives me hope that some Tories have a few shreds of integrity and recognise that the Rwanda policy is deeply wrong.

Stokey · 06/06/2022 08:00

Paul Brand is reporting the Tory Rebels think they have reached the number
twitter.com/PaulBrandITV/status/1533678447729553411?t=ZEXMBK5b7Qu1aEBYqa3G9A&s=19

Stokey · 06/06/2022 08:02

This is also interesting from Politico:

Dossier of doom: A document branding Johnson the “Conservative Corbyn” that did the rounds among Tory rebels over the weekend gets a good billing in most of the papers after being leaked to reporters including PolHome’s Adam Payne and the Sun’s Jonny Riley. Branded the “dossier of doom” by the Daily Mail, its provenance is unclear and the fact that it was drawn up in the exact style of a Conservative Research Department briefing has raised eyebrows. One MP speculated it could have been “set by CCHQ as a leak” (though if that were true surely they would have bothered to throw us off the scent by changing the font).

Notonthestairs · 06/06/2022 08:06

Yes that is a good letter from Jesse Norman - covers pretty much all the issues.

I also appreciate that it rules out taking a government position whilst Johnson is in office - i.e. his support can't be bought off!

Roussette · 06/06/2022 08:09

BBC have someone positioned for an iminent announcement. Apparently.

Vote this evening.

the80sweregreat · 06/06/2022 08:13

6pm vote of no confidence

HeritageVegetable · 06/06/2022 08:15

Placemarking as it all kicks off.

Excellent letter from Jesse Norman I thought: covers as many of the key problems as you could in only two pages of A4 and without using unparliamentary language.

Stokey · 06/06/2022 08:16

He was at the Treasury for years @Notonthestairs. Possibly a bit put out not to get a promotion rather than demotion in the last reshuffle, although he says he resigned. Also interestingly an old Etonian.

the80sweregreat · 06/06/2022 08:17

Graham Brady is in tv now

Blossomtoes · 06/06/2022 08:19

Number exceeded. I wonder how big the excess is? I thought they’d let him limp on until after the 23rd.

Ginajo · 06/06/2022 08:21

My MP has confirmed that he supports Johnson. He believes him apparently. Clearly either a fool or only interested in feathering his own nest. May change his mind of course when he sees which way the wind is blowing. Either way he's lost my vote forever.

Notonthestairs · 06/06/2022 08:23

That is interesting Stokey - Jesse Norman certainly left it quite late to send that letter in.

Speedy vote (on the day of tube strikes) to make it difficult for the rebels to muster their group. I hope they had anticipated this.
