I can't see Michael Gove being voted as the new leader of the conservatives any time soon , but to have a gay person leading any of the main political parties would be a huge step forwards or even a woman leading the Labour Party. I can't see either of these things happening though in the near future.
I don't know who would want to lead the conservatives at the moment ; I've just seen online that the NHS will be at the forefront of Boris Johnson's polices in the next few weeks so he is probably hoping this might save him from all the recent negative press.

Roussette · 05/06/2022 10:58

Totally agree 80s. I don't think it's him being gay, it's the other stuff that holds him back

DuncinToffee · 05/06/2022 10:59

Guess the question is who wants to take over this shit show?

Who wants to oversee the Rwanda deportations, risking the GFA, eating or heating etc.

Being a remainer will be more of a hurdle than his record as Health secretary

His record has Health and Care Secretary and lack of any pandemic planning ought to rule him out.

Ah, does that mean he is going to announce he is building 40 new hospitals again, which are neither new nor hospitals. I look forward to it.

And let's not forget the 20,000 more police! (after cutting over 20,000)

The bottom line is.... whatever BJ says, just assume the complete opposite. How the Tories are clinging onto him is gobsmacking.

L1ttledrummergirl · 05/06/2022 13:58

I think I know the answer to the police one.
My dbil has recently become a volunteer/special police officer and dd who wants to be a police officer, is going to sign up as a volunteer pcso when she turns 18 until she finishes 6th form and applies formally.
I'm not sure if either will be paid though, and both are/will be very part time.
They both want join properly but dbil was accepted just before recruitment was stopped around 10 years ago, had his offer withdrawn and now earns too much in his day job.

DuncinToffee · 05/06/2022 14:54

On those 40 hospitals

Boris Johnson's 40 new hospitals plan faces delays and rising costs amid a row for control between the "toxic triangle" of Treasury, DHSC and Number 10: t.co/aJzpZL7imu

Russ Jones on potential candidates

The Horny Honey Monster is on the ropes, so I think it's time to take a quick look at the runners and riders poised to take over from Boris Johnson.

It's an inspiring list.

From that excellent Russ Jones thread

"These are the major competitors to be next Tory PM.

And because we're a modern, functional democracy, the winner will be chosen by the 1 in 250 voters who have paid money to become members of the Tory party.

The loser, obviously, will be you."

Notonthestairs · 05/06/2022 15:42

Parliamentary Standards investigation kicks off tomorrow doesn't it?

CCHQ will be run off their feet.

That's really funny. Scarily true - but funny all the same!

Piggywaspushed · 05/06/2022 16:12

59 years ago today Profumo resigned for misleading parliament.

Roussette · 05/06/2022 16:15

@DuncinToffee

I am laughing out loud at that descriptive list of miscreants, reprobates and idiots just so right

DuncinToffee · 05/06/2022 16:18

If you aren't familiar with Russ Jones, his 'the week in Tory' are brilliant too.

The Times reporting that Hunt messaged Johnson that now wasn't the time to change PM.

Odd if true - but maybe he recognises many of the problems ahead are going to be tough to overcome especially with the Conservative factions. It's really not possible to please them all.
So better to let Johnson remain (!) a lame duck.

Yup. He doesn't want to take the blame if/when they lose the next election.

From your guy Duncin about the 67 letters in and what could be happening

Notonthestairs · 05/06/2022 16:47

In advance of any move against Johnson a timely reminder from Marina Purkiss about what happened after May successfully fought off VONC.

"Jacob Rees-Mogg, who led calls for the confidence vote, said losing the support of a third of her MPs was a "terrible result for the prime minister" and called on her to resign.
Brexit-backing Tory MP Mark Francois told the BBC it was "devastating" that more than half of backbenchers not serving in the government had abandoned the prime minister.
"In the cold light of day when people reflect on that number - 117 - it's a massive number, far more than anyone was predicting. I think that will be very sobering for the prime minister. I think she needs to think very carefully about what she does now."

twitter.com/marinapurkiss/status/1533473759444754435?s=21&t=njusDYwqNXZjnGVL3IWHsQ

I think they forget that everything is recorded for posterity these days.

Notonthestairs · 05/06/2022 16:56

I agree that Johnson is weakened however you cut it.

End of the beginning of the end.
(Not sure I've phrased that right!)

Peregrina · 05/06/2022 17:14

Could he do his greased piglet act and call a snap election? This is risky though, because he might well get voted out, even if he finds a 'safe' seat.

Notonthestairs · 05/06/2022 17:30

"Tory MPs who want Johnson out have this weekend been circulating a briefing document setting out why. It warns the party is on course to lose the next election & concludes “the only way to end this misery, earn a hearing from the British public… is to remove Boris Johnson as PM”

twitter.com/adampayne26/status/1533476836860170250?s=21&t=3lFF6quCROnv9sSnuMCvEw

Notonthestairs · 05/06/2022 17:33

Briefing makes the point Johnson can't win trust back from some voters and they will discount anything he says.

And that Partygate is not going away- Standards Committee can & will investigate the Downing Street flat parties.

That's an interesting read.

Very much echos what we've been saying.

Interesting that their comment re the boos at jubilee (note they aren't trying to deny they happened Wink) is exactly the point I made.

They didn't tell us what we didn't already know. They almost just cemented it in the minds of those who were unsure.

When Camilla Tominey turns against BJ you should know you're in trouble....
