That Guardian piece is obviously highly biased but it hits the spot for me.

this in particular:

”Johnson began by saying that things weren’t quite as bad as the 1950s when rationing was in place and life expectancy lower. He tapped the lectern persistently at this, as if annoyed that his audience wasn’t more grateful”

the banging of his hands infuriated me yesterday, apart from the whole ‘hitler’ vibe I put that in the same category as people who snap their fingers at shop and hospitality staff. Uppity oaf.

Having spent ages in a queue at local railway station I think reducing the staffing would be a mad idea. People were getting really agitated and eventually someone came out with the sort of ticket machine they use on the trains to try and stop the impending revolt. Where did he get that idea from?

Reducing the duty on bananas on the other hand is going to change my life, I probably eat 3 or 4 a week so that will offset the rising prices on everything else. Hooray for Boris saviour of the banana.

I like the John Crace columns , he has a splendid way with words.
I was watching a bbc programme about Bradford last night on two and the health professionals and carers on there were far more erudite and informed than our own PM is at the moment. I wished more people like them were in the cabinet as they actually have a grip of what it's like in the real world and how to solve so many social problems that the area faces.

Blossomtoes · 10/06/2022 11:53

Much as I hate misnaming politicians (speaking of which, anyone seen JJ lately?) I laughed at The Convict. Crace really does write very well.

ClaudineClare · 10/06/2022 12:13

he’s looking increasingly physically derelict, as if his body has given up on him

Interesting observation from Crace there.

I am looking forward to the by-elections. I think it will be carnage.

The challenge that faces political commentators/pundits/forecasters is that they're basing their analyses on standard norms of ethics, morality and self-awareness Confused

The problem with BJ (and he's like Trump and, dare I say it, Putin, in this regard) is that he has no ethics, morality or self awareness ShockSadAngry

He still has the toddler mindset of wanting anything that he wants, before having learnt of consequences and any sense of right and wrong. He truly is the spoilt wee boy who was never taught boundaries.

So he will could lose both by elections and still not think that it has any consequence for him Hmm

He wouldn't even leave the Foreign Office Residence until forced initially when he was the one that resigned Confused

Was it Dominic Grieve who said he'd hang on by his fingertips and even then would have to have them prised off one by one?

And this is the man the UK has to suffer as PM SadAngry

Blossomtoes · 10/06/2022 12:31

Very astute @prettybird. I’m so looking forward to him leaving Downing Street, what a joyous day that will be. I wish they’d held off the confidence vote until the 24th. But I’m very much enjoying him trash his party too.

Cornettoninja · 10/06/2022 12:37

“he’s looking increasingly physically derelict, as if his body has given up on him” - Crace

I wish it bloody would, I can’t bring myself to go as far as he shuffling off the mortal coil but just something that’s enough to render him unfit for office.

Accelerated ageing in all world leaders is a documented phenomenon, he’s playing a dangerous game at his age, level of fitness and vices.

itsgettingweird · 10/06/2022 12:46

The PPE fiasco I can almost forgive because we know we needed it and they were doing what they could to get it. I think there always the risk when so desperate we wouldn't get the best.
I can't forgive the mistakes being made because contracts were given to friends (didn't Hancock's pub landlord get a contract for something Ppe related?)

But 11bn on "forgetting" to insure debt? Surely someone who is in finance should not be making that level of mistake?

Blossomtoes · 10/06/2022 12:48

Surely someone who is in finance should not be making that level of mistake?

And if they did, they’d be fired. The City is a brutal place.

And they reckon the Tories are the party of fiscal competence. 🙄

Did you mean to say faecal incontinence?

InMySpareTime · 10/06/2022 13:22

There's only one thing that would definitively end Johnson's career.
If he hurt the Downing Street animals amount of bluster or spin would ever get the public back inside.
A photo of Larry the cat walking across Johnson's path as he left No 10, even an inadvertent trip over the creature, would end him.
Lies, corruption, infidelity, fraud, criminality, sections of the British public can forgive those, but animal cruelty is the one thing the public universally condemn.
As evidenced by the fact the RSPCA was set up a century before the NSPCC.

That WeekinTory is both hilarious (Shetland pint of the Apocalypse) and exhausting. They can pack a lot in to a week

Hey! I may have missed your comments but I was wondering where you’d gotten to. I thought you might have faced the same fate as the onion - true life ridiculousness was competing too much with satire 😁

I have been taking things a little easy. The absence of some of the regular Boris boos fans has meant there has been less ammo than normal as well.

ClaudineClare · 10/06/2022 14:08

They have been very quiet this week, haven't they?

Must be the ones identified for cuts in the CS.

Glad you’re ok @jgw1

CS or CCHQ?

DuncinToffee · 10/06/2022 15:06

Lowest of the low

Home Office has spent >£50,000 on PR for its Rwanda immigration plan.

Including £14k+ hiring a comms firm to develop branding and messaging for the policy and tens of thousands on social media ads.

A good use of public money???

The Rwanda plan is unspeakably vile and if it does go ahead it will be a stain on the UK.

Yes indeed

I don't think anyone of the 211 was sent out to do the media rounds this morning either.
