I wonder which ' focus group' came up with the music box idea?

The mind boggles.

That’s where I was listening to it - three cheers for Shelagh! Grin

The music box musings, what if there is a new PM in the near future , will they just put a new face on it ? Or leave it ?
The Queen would rather have a gold Paddington bear I bet.

DuncinToffee · 09/06/2022 16:32

Didn’t see the speech but read it was about Thatcher, bananas and olives?

And that he used 'we are on your side' a lot

Rather than steal Labour's clothes, Boris Johnson has stolen their slogan

I thought you were joking and then opened the BBC News link and see that that really is his slogan ShockHmm

the80sweregreat · 09/06/2022 17:50

No, it's a new slogan.

Cornettoninja · 09/06/2022 17:56

So does ‘benefits to bricks’ mean that people with mortgages will be able to claim the housing element of UC now? Surely they have to continue pay it to those who get a mortgage using it so I can see it being an administration nightmare to ring fence mortgage payments if it’s just for people who’ve started a mortgage using it?

That also implies that it’ll tie people into claiming UC for longer to meet their mortgage payments I would have thought.

Roussette · 09/06/2022 17:58

It's all nonsense. Not sure lenders have been consulted or agreed and I know the hoops my DD has just gone through to get a mortgage offer. It was some else

prettybird · 09/06/2022 18:13

Don't mortgagers/financial institutions offering loans now have a legal duty to ensure affordability? Confused

Isn't it called something like the stress test ?

And why would such institutions trust that the government would continue to pay such benefits? Ie almost by definition, the stress test would fail Confused

I think we can be sure on the question of whether lenders have been consulted,
given the governments track record of consulting with those who would have to implement their latest gimmicks and consisted ability to listen to experts in their fields.

Cornettoninja · 09/06/2022 18:31

Thats an excellent point. My Df’s disability (brain injury twenty years ago - very stable from a change in circumstance perspective) payment was put on hold for a period of months twice under this government. I think disability payments can already be taken into account for mortgages though but I’m not sure.

No banking donors then? Or maybe one’s itching to get their hands on a load of repossessions.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there.

the80sweregreat · 09/06/2022 18:43

'Benefits into repossession' ..
Buyers beware , especially as Boris Johnson hasn't consulted anyone apart from Michael Gove it seems. Those two just have been on a bender and dreamt this one up

Cornettoninja · 09/06/2022 18:44

Maybe ‘benefits into bankrupty’ - it has a nice ring to it and Boris does like something catchy to bark at PMQ’s.

Very true.

He just doesn't think.

He says "benefits" but yet there is such a massive amount of benefits.

Will he allow people on full UC who don't work to buy their home and continue to pay the mortgage for them via UC?

What about disability payments etc?

Do they just mean those who get UC top ups?

There's so many holes in this plan before you even get to the nitty gritty of the actual idea.

I get CTC because my ds is disabled.

It stops when he's 18 (this year)

They already forget things like disabled children become disabled adults and still require care. They don't pay carers if you earn a certain amount - but yet I work less hours because I need to care for my ds.

The benefits system is already broken. I'm really not sure (actually I'm absolutely sure) that instead of fixing the cost of living and wages and housing cost issue allowing people on low incomes which topped up with benefits to buy houses with 100% mortgage is the solution.

We need to fix the problem - not keep having short term solutions - like the 5p off petrol which lowered it by 5p for about 5 days and is now higher than it was at that point.

the80sweregreat · 09/06/2022 19:06

The experts are baffled , the public are angry and confused and Boris Johnson lives another day in his job. Happy days it really isn't.
Waiting for the by elections now . See how that goes !

February 2018, Theresa May: “No UK Prime Minister could ever agree to it. I will be making it crystal clear to President Juncker and others we will never do so.”
