The 70s really were bleak.
My username is because I was young and carefree in the 80s , there were opportunities for some , mostly in the south though and selling off council properties made many normal people very rich too. Builders etc really cleaned up too! It was a time of great change and the rise of the yuppie , but not all of it was good
The Del Boy episode where he falls through the bar hatch sums up the 80s at that time for me!

DuncinToffee · 08/06/2022 21:11

70s is more Boys from the Black Stuff

I was born in the 70s in Holland and it wasn't easy there either but I don't remember much of it.

That's my favourite scene!

But yes I do think it's sums it up.

I was 10 when Thatcher succumbed to the Tory party vote. So old enough to be starting to understand the whole politics thing and what was happening. But I still only think now - with Johnson - I'm understanding what that actually translates to in society when someone leads so determined to do it their way only.

I live south though. So I know the impact has been felt less for me.

I was 17 in 1970 and it was the decade that saw me get married and my son was born in 1975. The most frightening part of it for me was inflation. We had very little money and it went less far every week when I shopped, wages couldn’t possibly keep pace. Compared with that the power cuts, three day week and constant strikes were tolerable, it was the fear about how we were going to survive that was the killer.

tobee · 08/06/2022 22:49

Levelling up is a load of bollocks as it's entirely meaningless, a slogan and totally unquantifiable so no one can say whether anything has changed or not. 👍😏

I thought Patel looked fed up at PMQs, at one point sitting with her arms crossed and looking away from Johnson. She didn't look like a happy bunny to me.

Perhaps she fancied her chances as Leader, and his win dashed that hope.

Zonder · 09/06/2022 07:32

Do you think Patel would think she stands a chance?

If she does - I hope she doesn't!

AmaryIlis · 09/06/2022 07:55

I suspect Patel was fed up by the realisation that she has ahead of her months of having to defend the indefensible in terms of Rwanda bollocks, all for the sake of distracting people from the utter incompetence and corruption of the Prime Minister.

I note Conservatives are sending out bright yellow leaflets in Tiverton - with LIb Dems emblazoned across them.

I saw these leaflets, I thought they were very unusual as they reinforce the message that voting Lib Dem is about ousting the Tories - and I think plenty of voters may think 'good idea!'

Notonthestairs · 09/06/2022 08:23

Yes they tried something similar here in 2019 and my town responded by booting out the Tory MP. Odd that they can't focus on their track record.

The problem being the cost of replacing those homes.

It's just something for the headlines, another diversion.

The DM has started their attack on lawyers

OP posts:

"Gentle reminder for the hard of thinking:

Lawyers have no power to “block” anything. Literally no power at all.

All they do is present a person’s case to a court.

And a court has no power to “block” anything that the government does, unless the government has broken the law."

Lawyers are only good for one thing - advising the PM not to fill in Police questionnaires.

How has nobody seen the fatal flaw in the plan to allow benefits to be used to buy houses?
You currently can't get means tested benefits at all with savings over £16k, and the savings taper starts at £8k.
Even if a mortgage was cheaper than renting there's no way someone on means tested benefits could have enough deposit to get a mortgaged property

the80sweregreat · 09/06/2022 09:17

Not just the lawyers about the Rwanda proposals , but this new right to buy idea hasn't gone down well either. Scathing comments and not all trolls etc either
I really hope this may be Boris Johnson's 'poll tax ' and leads to a huge backlash, it's just not a good idea for too many reasons to list and really never was in the 80s either.
Many homes may end up being repossessed and it'll be the taxpayers picking up the bills.

They could if lenders were forced to offer 100% mortgages.

It just shows how they don't understand how the real world works.

Although, I don't think there is a savings limit for tax credits? Same for contribution based ESA and other disability benefits/Carer's Allowance.

Oh come on now, if people just learned to budget they could cook 30p meals and save up their benefits to buy a house.

100 percent mortgages , that went well in 08 !
.. or maybe the likes of Gove will swoop in after the repossession orders have been given and hoover up all this places when it goes pear shaped !

ClaudineClare · 09/06/2022 09:26

Exactly. Now remind me again, what happened in the US with the sub-prime mortgage market? Didn't it end up slightly impacting the global economy...
