Highlights:
All families can now keep the 200 quid energy payment, no longer repayment based. This will be topped up to £400.
Low income families to get £650 straight into bank account.
(Non means tested) disabled benefit recipients to get £150.
All in all some will receive total of £1,200.
Funded by windfall tax.

@icelolly12 really, why?

All of the people who are eligible for the 650 are on means tested benefits - and many of them will have the additional costs of disabilities to take into account as well.

Franklin12 · 26/05/2022 14:22

Ice - I kind of agree. There is no reason now to say there arent any roles for them. There are plenty of roles around.

How is this going to be paid?

Whooshaagh · 26/05/2022 14:23

icelolly12 · 26/05/2022 14:18

Hmm, I'll be a bit annoyed if every unemployed person gets an extra 650 on top of the 400, not going to lie.

Why?

Its low income families , only a fraction of these are unemployed. But thanks for your sympathy

My life won't be improved...that's the point. I'll still have to slave away and not be able to pay my bills. Yay.

Quit your job and claim it then.

RaspberryToo · 26/05/2022 14:24

Actually @icelolly12 your life will be improved because those people won't be attending NHS services with malnutrition, cold-related illnesses, damp-related illnesses, children will be more likely to stay in education and it will benefit society overall.

It's a one off payment.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/05/2022 14:24

UC and tax benefits cover a broader group than the unemployed. Most are on in-work benefits.

ClaudineClare · 26/05/2022 14:24

This is attracting the benefit bashers...how lovely.

They’re still not helping so many of the MOST VULNERABLE AND POOR.

The £400 energy discount for every household will be gotten directly from the energy companies. There is no mention of how this will apply to poor homes that have meters with key card top ups.

The £650 payments (There are two of these so total of £1300 - one in July and other in August i believe)

I am an extremely disappointed person who had to permanently give up work due to a progressive neurological disease similar to Parkinson’s, MS, ALS, and I only receive no means tested benefits of PIP and ESA. I will not be eligible for this as I am not on the qualifying benefit type.

At best I will get the extra one off £150 Disability Payment. While some disabled people who receive these particular qualifying benefits will receive both the two £650 payments AND the £150 payment. Which is Great for them, but as usual they are not helping ALL Disabled people who are in the poor income bracket, and are the most vulnerable. Disabled people often have many additional costs to help them with mobility, and care. Many energy eating machines and devices in their homes for example.

They also did this during the pandemic, people on means tested benefits received an extra £20 a week for 18 months, and excluded the people on PIP and ESA. Certain people went to court over this to try to prove the government is discrimination against disabled people and try to get these as backdated payments. I am not sure of the outcome of that just yet, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

We are struggling so much and this feels so unfair AGAIN, I could cry.

Well our household will get it and I'm not unemployed....

Exactly.

I don't know why people are moaning. Every household will get at least £400.

RaspberryToo · 26/05/2022 14:26

There aren't plenty of roles around for everyone - that's the point. There are roles in certain sectors that simply aren't suitable for many for a variety of reasons - disabilities, health conditions, childcare, localities, training / education etc.

TheyAreHomeEducated · 26/05/2022 14:26

Does anyone know when families will receive it?

BensonStabler · 26/05/2022 14:26

that was meant to read I am an extremely disabled person, not disappointed… although clearly i am.

Therefore my comment wasn't relating to you.

DogInATent · 26/05/2022 14:26

What about those of who now work from home, so have increased heating/electricity costs with no option to return to the office full time? 1% pay rise which is swamped up by NI and pension increase. Have to use own vehicle for work and mileage allowance barely covers what’s being spent now. Where is our help?

It would be nice to see rises in the WFH allowance and mileage allowance. Although fuel cost is only one part of the mileage allowance.

StickyFingeredWeeNed · 26/05/2022 14:26

Looks like I’ll get ALL the handouts because I get PIP and claim tax credits.

I work FT in child protection.

are you SERIOUSLY saying I don’t need/deserve help?

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 26/05/2022 14:27

icelolly12 · 26/05/2022 14:26

That is clearly what you were insinuating in that post. That everyone who gets the payment is a feckless lazy layabout

RaspberryToo · 26/05/2022 14:28

@BensonStabler it will be added to the meter - it does state this on the further information.

And I am pretty sure if you are on ESA then you will get the 650 payment - otherwise look into swapping to UC?

Catatemyhomework · 26/05/2022 14:28

I don't think it's going to help at all. All it will do is push up inflation and the energy companies will keep increasing their prices. What happens next year and the year after that? Will the government do this every year? It's bonkers. How are they financing it. They can't keep increasing taxes on the ordinary worker. It's completely unsustainable.

ClaudineClare · 26/05/2022 14:28

Prepay users will receive the money via their smart meter, voucher, or by cheque.

Nobody said that you don't deserve help. My comment was specifically relating to unemployed people capable of work.

It’s not £1300 it’s £650 paid in 2 instalments.

£400 will applied to key meters too. Mse has the info

Maggiethecat · 26/05/2022 14:28

I am glad that those who need help the most appear to be getting the most help. Won't begrudge them that.

Would be happy to give up my £400 discount to someone who needed it more but expect that it would be practical nightmare to means test and redistribute.
