I work with two people who need a UC top up.
Both have started to worry they will lose their house if things continue.
It's dire for many.

DressingGownofDoom · 26/05/2022 13:25

Helpful but it's only sticking a plaster on a giant wound. What happens in January 2023?

RoseOud · 26/05/2022 13:25

whatsthestory123 · 26/05/2022 13:17

im a bit confused

im disabled on ESA
also on PIP non means tested
1 child at school Tax credits

i guessing im classed as vunrrable

I'm in the same position as you.

I think it means we will get £400 (non means tested benefits) plus £150 (because of disability).

All these extra bits are just an ineffective sticking plaster, designed to make them pretend they are doing something. The big thing the government could have done is tell ofcom not to raise the cap in October. My energy bill is looking to be more expensive than my mortgage then.

IstayedForTheFeminism · 26/05/2022 13:29

Any idea if this isn't/is affected by the benefit cap?
I did read the article about it but couldn't work out if I will or won't get it.

Yes, by the looks of it you are entitled to each element of the measures. Rightly.

blimey add on the £150 council tax rebate and if i get it warm home grant £150 it's much appreciated as im at home alot, well

hope others get help as i think most need help

Featuredcreature · 26/05/2022 13:30

I'm on the basic esa because quite frankly I haven't got it in me to apply for anything else yet. I bet I'll not be entitled, like the extra £20 a week they gave to uc claimants. Because yes that £74 a week (most of that is directly taken out for water, gas, electricity social debt) really goes far. I guess I will have to take up photosynthesis soon if inflation gets any higher, lucky that good times chub from years ago will see me through.

MayorDusty · 26/05/2022 13:34

I think* the £650 applies to ESA IR as well. He didn't specify UC.
Unless you are on ESA contribution based.
(*as I understood it)

I want him to scrap the NI rise!

They have, for people earning under about £35k, from July. There are changes coming that means that many people will see their NI fall back again.

I don't know if the detail of this '£650 for the poorest households' has been published yet but yes, it will be a kicker for people who's incomes are slightly too high but their disposable income is low due to their essential outgoings being high, not always by choice.

lunar1 · 26/05/2022 13:35

All these benefits do is drive up prices. A minimum wage job should pay enough to live on. That's where the focus needs to be.

Benefits to working people enable private companies to increase their prices. Sometimes a system just needs rebuilding from scratch rather than patching up.

It's like putting a plaster on the titanic!

TheClitterati the £200 is the October 2022 payment that was a loan and is now a grant.

So what was the £150 paid as a council tax rebate for? Is that in addition? I'm confused Confused

Yeah that £650 should give you enough disposable income to last you until you retire if you give up work. Enjoy!

you should get the £150 CT
general grant £400
if you are on ESA etc £650
PIP £150
Warm home discount £150

not sure of all your circumstances though

Grotbag81 · 26/05/2022 13:41

The £150 council tax & the £200. The £200 was being given as a loan, but is now a grant, so free.

Lightning020 · 26/05/2022 13:43

Is the £400 paid straight into our bank account? Or will it be credited to our dual fuel bill instead?

LilacPoppy · 26/05/2022 13:43

@RoseOud @whatsthestory123 you will also get the £650 so
£400 everyone
£150 via council tax
£150 dla/pip
£650 tax credits

MayorDusty · 26/05/2022 13:45

Lightning020 · 26/05/2022 13:43

It'll be for council tax bands A-D so directly to you.

70kid · 26/05/2022 13:45

I read it as
ESA / UC / Legacy benefits £650
Everyone £400
disabled /pip £150
So £1200 in total

ipswichwitch · 26/05/2022 13:46

We still haven’t had the £150 yet, so I’d expect this £200 due in October by the following February then

The hard part is supplying help to those who need it most without driving up inflation

if we got to very high inflation - higher than now, but like Turkey say at extremely high rates - it would be very bad for everyone. People would likely panic on top

Pebble21uk · 26/05/2022 13:48

ESA does not qualify for the £150 - DLA / PIP and Attendance Allowance does.

ClaudineClare · 26/05/2022 13:49

LadyCatStark · 26/05/2022 13:10

Don't be silly. You will get the £400 grant, same as everyone else.

If you resent the unemployed, people on low pay, pensioners and the disabled getting a bit of extra on top of this, then I feel sorry for you.
