Ice - I kind of agree. There is no reason now to say there arent any roles for them. There are plenty of roles around.

How is this going to be paid?

No reason? None at all? You can't think of any reason why someone might not be able to take the jobs that are available?

Franklin12 · 26/05/2022 14:29

I agree with it being non means tested tbh. Means testing costs a large amount of money. And I take your point about all pensioners not being poor. My parents arent having worked for 40 years but the way some pensioners speak they will grab anything they can.

There was a chap on the radio yesterday saying he was a pensioner etc etc and didnt like the increase in fuel costs and didnt know how he could afford it, might have to choose between food and heating but it turns out he wasnt eligible for the recent CT £150 payment so clearly he was in a house worth over £500k. He convienently forgot to mention that until the presenter asked him.

RaspberryToo · 26/05/2022 14:29

What about those of who now work from home, so have increased heating/electricity costs with no option to return to the office full time?

You can claim the work from home tax rebate / hand out from HRMC - cannot remember what the exact name is.

Looks like I’ll get ALL the handouts because I get PIP and claim tax credits.

I work FT in child protection.

are you SERIOUSLY saying I don’t need/deserve help?

Yes we are all so lucky aren't we! Lucky to have disabled children, partners, be disabled ourselves, have had life change unrecognisably and be unable to work. But people still come on here and bash those they haven't got a clue about.

icelolly12 · 26/05/2022 14:29

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 26/05/2022 14:27

That is clearly what you were insinuating in that post. That everyone who gets the payment is a feckless lazy layabout

No. I was making a comment that the unemployed who are capable of working but don't are receiving a reward.

Anybody who can't work, gets dla/pip etc due to health needs my comment wasn't relating to those people. So don't jump down my throat

londonmummy1966 · 26/05/2022 14:30

I hoe to goodness that this time the pensioner top up is restricted to those who need it - it really annoys me that pensioners like DF who gets 6 figures a year get every benefit going.

Catatemyhomework · 26/05/2022 14:28

I don't think it's going to help at all. All it will do is push up inflation and the energy companies will keep increasing their prices. What happens next year and the year after that? Will the government do this every year? It's bonkers. How are they financing it. They can't keep increasing taxes on the ordinary worker. It's completely unsustainable.

The windfall tax on the energy companies is being used to fund it

caringcarer · 26/05/2022 14:32

This is actually very divisive. No idea why disabled people should get less than pensioners, and unemployed get more than both groups. Carers no help for them at all. Fairer to give zero vat on utility bills and make fuel cheaper so workers can afford to get to work.

Well I've clarified it now.

I think I saw it’s pensioners who are entitled to the winter fuel allowance.

FlySwimmer · 26/05/2022 14:22

Personally, I think the payment to pensioners shouldn’t be a blanket one. Many pensioners are very well off, and don’t need this really. It should be means-tested.

It only goes to pensioners currently receiving the Warm Home Discount, which is only given to those on low incomes or who get Pension Credit. It won't go to them all.

SpittinKitten · 26/05/2022 14:35

@BensonStabler the uplift court case found in favour of the DWP.

Catatemyhomework · 26/05/2022 14:37

@Sirzy , it isn't fully funded by this though. I think 7 billion is the windfall tax and this is costing over 30 billion. Can't remember exact figure but read it in the guardian earlier, which is why I wonder how they're funding it.

Youaremysunshine14 · 26/05/2022 14:38

Not all pensioners will get the top up! It only goes to pensioners currently receiving the Warm Home Discount, which is only given to those on low incomes or who get Pension Credit. So just the poorest ones, as is right.

StickyFingeredWeeNed · 26/05/2022 14:38

I’ve been in the system long enough to see that only 1% of the unemployed who are “able” to work are “playing the system”.

the other 99% are “car-crash”. Some might get through the other side and find life becomes easier.

but whatever, any £650 coming ANYONE’s way won’t be buying a yacht for the med. or even a designer fucking puppy.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 26/05/2022 14:38

@BensonStabler
If you receive PIP and or ESA you will qualify for the £150
I'm on high rates( both) on PIP and ESA( have CP)

GodspeedJune · 26/05/2022 14:38

Throw a load of ‘support’ measures in for excessive cost of living, help for this year then leave everyone back to square one next year. Great subterfuge.

FlySwimmer · 26/05/2022 14:39

Thanks for clarifying @Sirzy & @Youaremysunshine14. The news coverage I saw just said ‘pensioners’. That is a sensible approach.

BensonStabler · 26/05/2022 14:39

I see some people have said that if you’re on ESA you will get the £650 payments. The list i read of the qualifying benefits never mentioned ESA.

There are two different types of ESA, I imagine it will be the contribution based ESA that will qualify. Personally I’m not on that.

Does anyone have a link to the official list of qualifying benefits. I read it in a paper, but don’t have it to hand anymore.

It is needed for many though, don’t you think?

It goes to all those receiving the Winter Fuel Payment which is all households with at least one person of pension age
