Or no one ever talks about them anymore.

I will offer chocolate covered cornflakes, which used to be in high street baker's windows every eater with confectionary eggs atop. A staple home economics recipe, I recall running home from school with a large tin, convinced that I was going to blow everyone's mind with my culinary genius.

And Spam. Like 'corned beef', but the pork version, also in a tin. That curious shape, reminded me of feeding the cat. My DH watches a lot of wild camping/van man stuff in Japan on youtube and it seems to be having a resurgence..

Spira chocolate bars 😥I wish they would just bring them back already!

Tripe (don't think it needs to come back though!) I remember it being in great piles at the front of the market butcher's display fridge when I was a child, such was it's popularity 🤢

We have brandy snaps every Christmas, available in all supermarkets. Tinned ratatouille can be a little harder to get hold of but usually in Tesco. It's really lovely with a crushed stock cube as a sauce for meatballs and pasta.

Perdy45 · 20/05/2022 22:25

Birdseye chocolate lovely! I still think about them!

Izal toilet roll and pink carbolic soap.

Neither of these things should make a comeback... EVER!

I don’t think I have ever recovered since they discontinued Puffa Puffa Rice.

JohnPrescottsPyjamas · 20/05/2022 22:32

Liqueur chocolates. I remember tucking into a box as a kid and being rather disappointed at the bitter tasting liquid in the middle, but I pushed on through for the actual chocolate. I must have put a fair amount away for a child as I finished the whole box!

I think I was about 10 before we got a freezer and this was the first food I remember being in it. Birds Eye Crispy Cod Fries. So creamy inside and crunchy outside, nothing's ever come close.

Lollies like the ones below. They came in fruit flavours but the best was a butterscotch one, similar to a Werthers.

M&S toffee yoghurts. Came in a pack of four and were lovely.

M&S baked potato flavour crisps.

The thing I miss the most are Sainsburys cheese buttons. They were similar to the delta crisps, but round and so delicious. Wish they’d bring them back.

Treacle crunch creams- was exited to see the green packets back but sadly now ginger flavour

Red club biscuits

"Vol au vents were a staple at every single buffet. Always with a creamy mushroom and a prawn cocktail option. They were always my fave. Some shops sell the cases at Christmas, but it's not the same."

Yes every late 80s/early 90s dinner party buffet. Vaguely posh. I liked the mushroom ones.

I agree Philadelphia in a block in foil needs to come back. The texture was much better, the block was a good size plus not as shit for the environment as those shitey plastic tubs.

To recreate the height of 90s sophistication, simply get two bits of chives, cross them over each other diagonally and put them on top of...whatever it is you're serving. Any damn thing. Even the desserts probably had crossed chives on them. The 90s equivalent of serving handcut triple cooked chips in a wanky receptacle.

ludocris · 20/05/2022 22:51

Also Tesco used to do a tub of ice cream that was milk, white, and dark chocolate swirled together

Not strictly a food, but a drink but a 'Snowball' drunk only at Christmas - Avocat and lemonade mixed in a long glass.

Drunk only by the children in my extended family in the late seventies and 1980's.

I can remember sitting at my nans, knocking these back with my cousins when I was still in primary school and none of the adults seemed to think it was an issue!!!

We aren't even a family of boozers, it was just the way it was back then 😂

We used to get these in ready made bottles at Christmas when visiting my Grandparents in Ireland. The nostalgia!! I still look for them at Christmas. Lord knows why they let us drink them as kids??!! 🤪

Bird's Eye French Bread Pizzas!

youdothemaths · 20/05/2022 23:02

Mixed fruit jam! If it's still in existence I'd love to know where, as I haven't seen it in yonks.
Also just remembered that back in the non-PC 1970s Robertson's marketed their seedless bramble jelly as 'golliberry bramble. 😧People actually bought this stuff and didn't turn a hair, ditto @ the golliwog on the side of the jar. How times change.

youdothemaths · 20/05/2022 23:03

Also, there used to be a dessert called Arctic Circles, basically a slice of Arctic Roll coated in chocolate... those were my idea of heaven when I was a kid.

ActonBell · 20/05/2022 23:04

Chicken paste sandwiches
Secret chocolate bar - always chose this as my Friday treat from the corner shop en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_(chocolate_bar)

There seem to be far fewer cocktail sausages and pavlovas at social occasions than I remember as a kid!

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 20/05/2022 23:07

I've just remembered Cheddar Spread in a jar. Tasted like Dairylea triangles. Delicious.
Every Sunday my Nan used to give me 3d and a pack of fruit Polos which all stuck together and tasted revolting. Can't remember them without shuddering.

allboysherebutme · 20/05/2022 23:16

Birds eye chicklets. X

I'd forgotten all about Cheddar Spread too! We always had a jar in at our house.

Underroad · 20/05/2022 23:35

You have just reminded me of Cheddarie cheese spread. Early-mid 90s I think. Haven’t seen it for at least 20 years: m.youtube.com/watch?v=WV9QIPKIhJA

Underroad · 20/05/2022 23:45

And another early/mid 90s one:
Seltzer drinks that came in a clear can. They were flavoured water and there was a lemon and lime one and a vanilla one. The clear can was super exciting. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/114222887079?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=DTmQT7xhQV2&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Chocolate Lovelies - came in a mini tub with a weird cream flower on the top - think you bought them frozen and ate when defrosted

I used to love those!

Nailest · 20/05/2022 23:59

@sueelleker I’m so glad you remember these! I don’t know why it’s never occurred to me to freeze my own double cream.

Check out some Polish or European supermarkets, their jam selection is great. I get pineapple jam for my mum from the polish deli shop.

MaryMount13 · 21/05/2022 07:59

Potato triangles from Tesco or sainsburys. Not the M and S ones which aren't the same
