Or no one ever talks about them anymore.

I will offer chocolate covered cornflakes, which used to be in high street baker's windows every eater with confectionary eggs atop. A staple home economics recipe, I recall running home from school with a large tin, convinced that I was going to blow everyone's mind with my culinary genius.

And Spam. Like 'corned beef', but the pork version, also in a tin. That curious shape, reminded me of feeding the cat. My DH watches a lot of wild camping/van man stuff in Japan on youtube and it seems to be having a resurgence..

@InsanityOf2020 the Jaffa cakes with cherry filling and white chocolate were called Pims. You can still get similar in France but never seen them again over here.

Does anyone remember Ketchips? They were potato croquette-type things with ketchup in the middle. Tasted great but you had to be careful not to burn your mouth (probably why they were discontinued!)

I used to love Inspirations chocolates, fruity flavours in a box with pull out drawers. They were great.

the other thing I really miss is Marks and Spencer’s tuna melt sandwich. It had tuna mayo in the middle with onions/peppers, then it had a soft cheese topping. It was delicious and I still miss it even though they stopped making it about 20 years ago. I still look every time I’m in M&S in case they’ve brought it back.

That tuna melt sandwich was one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten.

So many memories!

We used to go to the Berni Inn opposite the Free Trade Hall in Manchester before concerts there. Happy days!

I remember eating that fizzy popping stuff called either space dust or moon dust in class with my friend. The teacher asked her a question, she opened her mouth and there was just a load of fizzing and popping. We used to have those sugar cigarettes and pretend to smoke them. Didn't they have a red/pink dot on one end?

I remember Neapolitan chocolates and ice cream too. My grandma always gave us the ice cream if we had our tea there. She would also buy Um bongo and Lilt for us and my grandpa who had a very sweet tooth.

To whoever it was who mentioned sorbets, Lidl's are excellent. They don't always have them in across the winter & early spring but they are back now.

Finally, we are going to visit our best man who lives abroad shortly. He is desperate for some Heinz tinned steamed puddings. Could someone please tell me if you can buy them in places like B&M. I would really appreciate it.

Jubbly, a large frozen orange drink packaged in an intriguing pyramid-shaped pack. Cut the top off and it was an enormous iced lolly affair that would last for what seemed like hours and could be passed around your friends. Hygiene? No.

Very much available

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/05/2022 20:49

(Golden syrup ones I think)

Heinz themselves say that they don't produce them anymore.

Might be an import.orna different brand though, as you say.

Ah, okay. Same coloured tin.

as an aside, my auntie boiled one many years ago and forgot to puncture the tin. Exploded all over the kitchen. Some was still on the ceiling a good ten years later 🤣

Carmelle caramel pudding. They came in a packet, you mixed the powder with milk to make a vanilla type blancmange, then poured the caramel syrup on when it was set.
My mum didn’t really do puddings (Granda was diabetic) so this was a rare treat.

ThomasinaGallico · 20/05/2022 21:36

Also, Tivall vegetarian kievs. DH preferred these to any other brands but you can’t seem to get them any more.

Ooooh yes mandarin flan - my mum used to make that, tinned mandarins mixed with orange jelly atop a sponge flan case. Served with evaporated milk!! 😀

I still make this! Known in our house as goldfish pie. You can mix in the evaporated milk with part of the melted jelly and juice for a creamy orange layer. Sounds horrible - isn't.

Doorhandleghost · 20/05/2022 21:52

mr men yogurts. What I wouldn’t do for a Mr Bump’s chocolate yoghurt. Also loved mr messy’s raspberry yoghurt.

I can also no longer find banana yoghurt, which I love.

the stuffed marrows are bringing back bad memories - I swear my mother used to make it as a silent protest against having to do all the cooking and housework.

Brandy Snaps - staple at Christmas. Ne’er to be seen or found these days.

Haslet - Dry, like slices of an over flamed kebab left out in the sun. Horse meat mainly, but the taste was irrelevant. The novelty was in the table discussion on how to pronounce it - Has-let or Haze-Let.

Marrow - stuffed with meat, maybe cheese and brought to the table. Just don’t see it anymore other than under Keith’s arm on way back from allotment. Keith doesn’t like it either.

They sell brandy snaps and hastet in our local asda
