Ain't this the truth.....

David Simmonds MP told other members of the Tories’ 2019 intake in a WhatsApp group: “The only ‘good’ outcome I can see is if Starmer is fined and doesn’t resign. Any other outcome just makes us look worse by comparison.”

'He had 1 work meeting in 2021'

That we know of! thanks to 2 students who filmed it. It gives us a snap shot of their boozy culture of booze at 10pm no? It demonstrates a clear disregard for those who couldn't attend funerals and who couldn't visit relatives according to Starmer's very own assessment. I hope he apologises to those relatives regardless of any fines 🙄. Workplace interactions were fine, attacking others for the same was not. Kettle and pot etc etc.

'And by the way, the only person I see banging on about exploiting grieving relatives is you'

I may be the only one on this thread banging on about exploitation but we all know every single PMQs he used his best sincere voice to describe a very sad tragic bereavement to further his political argument.

That made me laugh out loud! Did they buy a fridge especially for booze? Were there 15 parties, some with invites for over 100 and a note saying 'bring your own booze'? Were there suitcases wheeled from the nearest supermarket laden with booze? Have there been 50 FPNs issued and more to come?
To compare what went on with the Tories and eating during a work meeting literally a year later when rules were different... is laughable.

I may be the only one on this thread banging on about exploitation

No. The only one anywhere. I have seen no mention of this apart from on your posts. You're on your own here.

I suspect they are getting a bit sweaty in CCHQ right now.

Johnson with 6 parties under Police investigation, 1 FPN, misleading Parliament 12 other parties happening in Downing Street, Sue Grey report impending, Parliamentary Standards report impending, not to mention the attempts to get Owen Paterson off the hook, the £59,000 accepted from Tory donor to redecorate, the fudging of who paid for the holiday in Mystique, Jennifer Acuri, Russian money swilling around the Tory coffers, fast tracked PPE contracts for Friends and Families, illegal progration of Parliament, saying Let the Bodies Pile High... I could go on...

But Yes Starmer is far worse than Johnson.

People could attend funerals at that point.

HarrietPierce · 09/05/2022 15:51

JaniieJones You have to stop reading the Daily Mail and then you might see things from amore realistic perspective.

The Jennifer Acuri investigation has been reopened recently due to new information (she handed in her journals following being called a liar by De Spaffle's team). Funny how the Daily Mail haven't focused on that re-investigation, the PM (then mayor) syphoning off public funds to take his lover on holiday.

Not sure if that warrants a proud parent moment

TokyoSushi · 09/05/2022 15:57

Prediction: This will be the end of Starmer one way or another. He may well get fined and go, or he might not be fined at all. But I think that although there was some progress in the local elections, it wasn't good enough, and Labour know that they're not going to win at the next election with him in charge and so the clock is ticking one way or another.

Whatever happens with Starmer, I'd say that Johnson's position remains unchanged. He doesn't give a shit about the fines (I think there'll be more) and will carry on riding his 'jolly old Boris' luck. The phrase 'the Prime Minister has apologised, but what the British people want is for him to get on with the job' will get louder and louder. He's bought some time with Ukraine, and if the going gets really tough, I think he'll have a word in Rishi's ear and they'll throw us a bone with the cost of living. They might actually go through with the windfall tax to reduce our energy prices, or chuck us a couple of quid somewhere else.

I suspect we'll have him right until 2024, and even then he might just win again. I despair.

Notonthestairs · 09/05/2022 15:57

Coffeecreams** - I didn't know they'd reopened the Acuri investigation.
It's almost too difficult to keep up with the sheer number of investigations in to Johnson's behaviour.

God he's just so tedious isn't he. Who gives a rat's ass if he resigns or not if he gets an fpn.

The point is he should apologise for exploiting grieving relatives and harping on about CakeGate when he was doing exactly the same.

@JaniieJones Was your beloved Prime Minister exploiting the little girl who wrote to him about cancelling her birthday party.

Have we worked out yet why the Prime Minister had to have a birthday party, but thought it was appropriate to deny that opportunity to millions of children?

HarrietPierce · 09/05/2022 16:08

Starmer speaking now . No laws were broken . But if the police issued a FPN he would step down.

DuncinToffee · 09/05/2022 16:12

Bit more from Keir Starmer's press conference

"People were entitled to expect that politicians would follow the same rules as everyone else. When my Mother-in-Law died suddenly just before lockdown, my wife and I were unable to provide the support to her father we wanted to"

"Because we followed the rules. Barely a day has passed where we haven't agonised over that decision. But we did it. Because we followed the rules."

Starmer: "The idea that I would casually break those rules is wrong. And frankly I don't believe those who are accusing me believe I would either. They're trying to feed cynicism, to get the public to believe that all politicians are the same. I'm here to say that they're not."

DuncinToffee · 09/05/2022 16:14

Starmer: "The British public deserve politicians who thinks the rules apply to them, who hold themselves to the highest standards, who put the country first rather than themselves. They will always, always get that from me."

Starmer: "This is a matter of principle and honour for me. It's about who I am, what I stand for. And I stand for honour and integrity and a belief that politics is a force for good and we shouldn't just be dragged down by a belief that all politicians are all the same."

HarrietPierce · 09/05/2022 16:14

The whole thing is a right wing smear and I can' believe Durham police have fallen for it.

He wasn't doing exactly the same

In terms of being an apologist for Johnson you'd already set the bar low but now seem to be making attempts to limbo dance under it.

Roussette · 09/05/2022 16:16

"We are not all the same"

That sums it up.

OP posts:
DuncinToffee · 09/05/2022 16:17

Starmer: "This is about me, it's about what I believe in in politics. It's about integrity. I believe in integrity and integrity requires me to take the course of action I've set out here in the event I were to receive a Fixed Penalty Notice."

Roussette · 09/05/2022 16:20

Yep.

Ben Kentish
@BenKentish
By pushing Beergate so hard, CCHQ and friendly press have given Starmer an opportunity to draw a major diving line between him and Boris Johnson on a key issue - trust & integrity - that’s at the heart of Starmer’s pitch to voters. A gamble for KS but could be key moment.

OP posts:
DuncinToffee · 09/05/2022 16:23

NEW: @AngelaRayner also confirms she’d resign if she were to receive a Fixed Penalty Notice: “We have a Prime Minister who has been found to have broken the rules, lied about it and then been fined. If I were issued with a fine, I would do the decent thing and step down."

DuncinToffee · 09/05/2022 16:25

Twitter bots are already busy spouting
speech is an attempt to influence the outcome of an ongoing police investigation.

HarrietPierce · 09/05/2022 16:29

Let's hope the Tories are hoist by their own petard.

Notonthestairs · 09/05/2022 16:30

"Twitter bots are already busy spouting

Unlike Tory MPs and right wing media mounting a campaign for Durham police to reopen the "case".

Peregrina · 09/05/2022 16:38

If Starmer is cleared, would he be able to sue the Mail for defamation? It might not be worth it, though.
