Thanks for the new thread @Roussette

Personally I wouldn’t be sorry if Starmer resigned. I’d like him to hold off until either Balls or Burnham could be elected in Wakefield then there would be a credible candidate for Labour leader. Either would work for me.

I think the candidates for Wakefield have already been named.

Steven Swinford (Times)

CCHQ delighted with Beergate. They see it as most successful political attack in living memory

Some Cabinet ministers are already reviving Cameron’s ‘coalition of chaos’ claim from 2015 about risk of Lab-SNP coalition

Cabinet ministers think there is no obvious alternative to Boris Johnson now that Rishi Sunak’s standing has been diminished

One said the prospect of a Tory leadership contest had gone from a prize fight to a wacky races-style chaotic scramble - something no MP wants

It's quite an admission about Conservative party leaders' perception of the quality of their MPs that they are seriously saying that, amongst 358 of them, they can't think of one who would have credibility as PM.

ancientgran · 08/05/2022 12:01

Roussette · 07/05/2022 21:06

Exactly

That will be kept quiet

Who knows. You only need one disgruntled member of staff to kick it off, or even a member of staff struggling with the cost of living crisis and thinking a few thousand from a newspaper would make things easier.

I agree. I have never known it that there hasn't been someone waiting in the wings for the top job. A natural successor as it were.
There are some good tories (as far as being tory goes...) but they would never be considered

itsgettingweird · 08/05/2022 12:10

I agree there's good Tory's that will never be considered. The sad reality is they won't be considered because they won't spin a party line that is clearly a load of gaslighting crap to media outlet after media outlet.

You need a team like Dorries, Patel, Rees -Mogg and Shapps to keep you in power.

Although it's reassuring that many Tory MPs probably do have integrity and that's why they won't be put forward.

prettybird · 08/05/2022 12:21

Tom Tugendgat or Tobias Elwood would be tholable - neither in the Cabinet but both excellent chairs of select committees.

From the Cabinet, Ben Wallace would be just about acceptable. FFS - even Gove who has been keeping his head down would be better Shock Interestingly, ds tells me that Gove has been doing some joint events with Tugendhat Hmm

So what though? It didn't save them hundreds of seats. If Starmer his found to be in the wrong, I am quite sure he will do the honourable thing and resign immediately.

It’s not the most successful political attack in my memory, let alone people older than me.

It was the day after the elections so no it wouldn’t have done

if it comes to resignation I’ll be annoyed but maybe many will be happy

Blossomtoes · 08/05/2022 15:19

It appears the Tories are far from being as sanguine as some on this thread would have us believe.

Peregrina · 08/05/2022 17:19

Blossomtoes - that is of course the Guardian. If you read yesterday's Mail you would never know that there had been an election last week, in which the Government of the day got a thrashing. You would have thought that the only news was about an alcoholic Opposition Leader.

Piggywaspushed · 08/05/2022 17:26

And Harry and Meghan.

Luculentus · 08/05/2022 17:29

The problem for the Mail is that if Beergate goes away they've got nothing apart from a few moans about biased police - which will be difficult to sustain in light of what happened with Cummings.

GingerPCatt · 08/05/2022 17:48

Can someone please remind me, did KS say anything about beer gate in Parliament?
For me, its not so much the rule breaking (which is shit) but the lying to parliament and breaking the ministerial code it the big issue.

Peregrina · 08/05/2022 18:04

I am old enough to remember the original Watergate from which all these 'gate' scandals take their name - it wasn't just the break in and attempted cover up, it was a symbol of a rotten to the core administration.

Similarly Partygate isn't about whether Johnson stuffed his face with a piece of birthday cake - it's about his failure to tackle Covid promptly, siphoning off public money to his already wealthy cronies, lying non stop, including in Parliament, illegally proroguing Parliament expecting the general public to be gullible enough to believe it and so on. I.e. equally rotten to the core as was Watergate.

Even Johnson's boast about his vaccine roll out, which was also spurious, is now losing traction since Omicron arrived and just about everyone has gone and caught it.

The DM has milked partygate as much as any tabloid / media

on the elections there are a fair few articles www.dailymail.co.uk/news/partygate/index.html

not sure why they are being held up as a site that doesn’t cover stuff like partygate for months like everyone else - maybe more - It’s good as click bait press

"JRM not freelancing here. This implicit call for a truce, I’m told, is the line the chief whip is desperate for Tory MPs to take on Beergate.

They’ve been warned that Starmer’s resignation would cause serious problems for the Tories in the country."

With apologies for the flurry of cut & paste tweets. I thought they were interesting.

"Starmer’s resignation would cause problems for Boris by hastening his departure.

It is ‘the Tories in the country’ who would benefit from that, not suffer.

Boris’ interests and Conservative interests have been different since mid Jan — and many Tories still haven’t realised it."

This sums it up

From a former Tory Downing Street Chief of Staff
here

"People are trying to smear Keir starmer & suggest he's the same as Boris Johnson... there is a difference... Keir Starmer doesn't tell lies & Boris Johnson does, & people know that pretty clearly"

Also some people don't seem to know that, isn't that right @Clavinova ?
