It was a huge factor

look at the polls and when the drop started

Listen to people speak on radio or comments in papers

at an event the night before the only reason people gave was breaking the rules

Nothing else - look at the threads here over and over posting on the same topic for months

Luculentus · 08/05/2022 09:34

The significance of the parties in terms of the local elections was (1) the fact that Johnson repeatedly broke the rules his government set and which he repeatedly told us all to comply with and (2) his repeated lies about them, particularly his lies to Parliament.

Toplurcher · 08/05/2022 09:35

MarshaBradyo · 08/05/2022 09:25

Of course it was the police due to elections but he is still lucky and people will be feeling duped

the biggest drop has been due to partygate due to extensive coverage

I'm not sure why anyone would feel duped. How much of a link is there between a curry with colleagues and multiple piss ups? I mean, was starmer's wife and decorator at this curry?

Also, while partygate will have been a factor, I think a lot of tories are fed up with this ultra right wing incompetent government and the Rwanda plan and lack of action on cost of living will partly explain votes going yellow and the amazing wipe outs in Scotland and Wales.

MarshaBradyo · 08/05/2022 09:40

We’ll see

if you set up the public with a simple message for months then if you do the same you’ve tried to use it to advantage and it’s come back on you

DC initially set the ball rolling on partygate and he is very good at gauging public mood with a simple emotive message - be it brexit or partygate

even some of his own party say he should go if fined

I think he should stay as the whole thing has been ludicrous

Notonthestairs · 08/05/2022 09:42

We are where we are because of repeated foot dragging by Johnson/Conservatives in November and December last year.
Swift publication of the Grey report would have seen much of party gate left in the past.

Piggywaspushed · 08/05/2022 09:46

There is a cabal of students at Durham who are libertarian, anti lockdowners , and very attention seeking, focused entirely on building shock jock careers. Their 'oh me?I'm not a Consrevative' doe eyed act does not wash. It's obvious to me what's behind this and all power to Nandy this morning for not playing what she correctly called the 'game'.

Notonthestairs · 08/05/2022 09:49

Agree Piggy. The Sunday Times reported that Tory HQ attack unit (?!) were assisted by hard left Labour activists who resent Starmer taking over from Corbyn.

Notonthestairs · 08/05/2022 09:52

Sorry I meant agree piggy but the Sunday Times..

Peregrina · 08/05/2022 09:53

So an extreme right and extreme left pincer movement out to get Starmer? Yes, sounds likely.

I doubt whether anyone in what was true blue W Oxon were bothered. They did put an extra Labour councillor in but most Tory votes were lost to the Lib Dems. I suspect that's going to be the case in a lot of southern English seats. Or of course they went Green.

Piggywaspushed · 08/05/2022 09:55

Yes, hard left seem to be crowing but the ones at Durham are definitely not left...

MarshaBradyo · 08/05/2022 09:56

I was surprised that people who typically voted Cons stated that partygate meant they couldn’t

but it has been effective as a campaign, look at threads on here. It has always been talked about.

on Starmer he should hold firm either way and ignore the left of his party.

Notonthestairs · 08/05/2022 09:59

Tory votes in my town have all gone to LD's.

prettybird · 08/05/2022 10:01

IMHO (from my experience of work, rather than campaigning Wink), the fact that there was an agenda is not a smoking gun Confused On the contrary, it's evidence that it was indeed a permitted work event - especially that it was allocated a time. The fact that it is followed by "Event ends" without a time again is not a smoking gun that no further work that was done after the break for food. Rather, it could be seen further evidence that the food was to be ordered for that time and eaten while having a short break and continuing to work while finishing off the food.

That's certainly the way that I would've operated at, say, a conference or exhibition (closest equivalent to campaigning). Smile

NB: I am not a Labour voter (although I was many years ago) and unlikely ever to be so again, given Starmer's attitude towards a second Indyref.

Caveat: I've not read the actual Mail article (won't give them the benefit of the click bait Hmm)

"Yes, hard left seem to be crowing but the ones at Durham are definitely not left..."

Yes especially that awful Durham University student Sophie Cocoran who makes Patel look reasonable by comparison !

Piggywaspushed · 08/05/2022 10:06

Yes, twas who I was trying not to name!

I don't think it is specifically her to be fair.

HarrietPierce · 08/05/2022 10:07

Corcoran

HarrietPierce · 08/05/2022 10:09

"I don't think it is specifically her to be fair."

No I just meant in general. They keep wheeling her out on right wing chat shows.

Piggywaspushed · 08/05/2022 10:11

She truly is dreadful. Makes Dorries look thoughtful.

Peregrina · 08/05/2022 10:12

What I take from this MarshaBraydo is that you are annoyed that the Tories have suffered a thumping great loss. Going on about Starmer being as bad won't explain the losses to LibDems, Greens, SNP, PC or Sinn Fein.

I do think that those of the electorate who turn out to vote in local elections are a bit more sophisticated. Partygate is merely a shorthand way of saying that this is a corrupt Government which believes it's above the rules, and has been wasting our money left right and centre, enriching their chums, but won't find anything to deal with e.g. rising fuel bills. Which of course, would be 'silly'.

MarshaBradyo · 08/05/2022 10:19

Funny it’s not although people seem to think them or for some reason

I laughed at first when I heard this morning, but then it annoyed me how swayed we are as a country by the press and campaigns by DC

be it Brexit, or partygate

or petrol crisis or demanding lockdown on another note.

Which is why Starmer should stay even if fined. You’ll likely see more Labour supporters saying he should go, than I would.

Given the effectiveness of the campaign on polling and votes I do think he’s very lucky not to face this a month ago.

I thought cons would be hit harder I doubt you’ll see many posts from me annoyed about result - if you read threads if so interested. I hoped Starmer would change some policies as a result. I’m a floating voter and would go back to Labour if they met some things I need to see

Notonthestairs · 08/05/2022 10:21

Daisy Cooper on Sophie Ridge saying that they have a good chance at taking Raab's seat in the next election and that people are sick of being taken for granted.
That was the message from the red wall in the last election. I'd agree the Home Counties and SW are sending a similar message (although I think SW have more grounds for complaint).

Notonthestairs · 08/05/2022 10:26

You'd only assume more Tory losses if you'd swallowed their expectation management.

"When David Canzini, the No 10 deputy chief of staff, addressed ministerial aides on Friday he was quick to praise the “expectation management” operation by CCHQ’s communications team under Alex Wild (nicknamed “Wildman”), which had led to public predictions of 800 to 1,000 council losses. Internally 450 to 500 lost seats was regarded as the bad end of the central estimates, a grim milestone that was achieved."

From the Times.

MarshaBradyo · 08/05/2022 10:26

As for Starmer ‘being as bad’ on this issue is irrelevant to me.

I find it all ludicrous and I wouldn’t vote based on partygate or ‘beergate’

Many have though whether they switched to Lib Dems, Labour or other

itsgettingweird · 08/05/2022 10:57

Piggywaspushed · 08/05/2022 10:11

She truly is dreadful. Makes Dorries look thoughtful.

That's one to add to the CV!

Dorries talking about channel 5 being privatised was hilarious. She was like an adult talking down to a naughty child and yet she couldn't remember how many years ago it actually happened.

And the punchline being it never was publicly owned and never privatised 🤣

DuncinToffee · 08/05/2022 11:12

Steven Swinford (Times)

CCHQ delighted with Beergate. They see it as most successful political attack in living memory

Some Cabinet ministers are already reviving Cameron’s ‘coalition of chaos’ claim from 2015 about risk of Lab-SNP coalition

Cabinet ministers think there is no obvious alternative to Boris Johnson now that Rishi Sunak’s standing has been diminished

One said the prospect of a Tory leadership contest had gone from a prize fight to a wacky races-style chaotic scramble - something no MP wants
