Re-wear your clothes?

Do you do that? Re-wear them?

What do you do when you wear your clothes again (apart from keep downwind of other people of course!)

Is 'minger' back? Haven't heard it since the 90s!

Never went away in Scotland from whence the term hailed.
Mingin’ also came to mean utterly pished here.

It’s a good word but not one I’d apply to second day jeans wearers. 🙄

Onwards22 · 07/05/2022 09:37

It's threads like these that remind me not to listen to many mothers who complain they have too much housework - so many women are obviously just doing unnecessary work.

I do wonder how many women who claim everything must be washed everyday are SAHP and feel guilty if they’re not doing housework 24/7.

Jinglebin1 · 07/05/2022 09:39

I'm a smelly cow so no I don't. At a push I might wear jeans again but max 2 days.

OctFeb · 07/05/2022 09:44

Tops get worn a few times if not smelly. Jeans get worn more. Knickers and socks once only, for everyone!

School uniform in the wash straightaway when they get in and they change into the same clothes for a few days in a row, as it’s only worn for a few hours. Children will wear PJs for a good few nights at a time. I only wear mine in the evening, not for sleeping so they can do a few days too.

This and the other thread where people said they washed clothes after a holiday even if they hadn't been worn AT ALL because they didn't separate clean and dirty or because they needed to be ironed.

Yes, aka Martyrs… no sympathy for them, especially for those with >3 kids

"I have a bad skin condition and cannot rewear clothes,"

Well, that's totally different.

"tbh I probably have less of an environmental impact generally than those who are on their high horses over someone washing their clothes after one wear"

How could you possible know other people's environmental impact?

I don't know everyone else's, I was commenting on my own being low. I wonder how many of these people who are complaining about an extra wash or 2 a week being so awful for the environment are running cars? Flying? Colouring their hair? Etc etc. My comment was that I am very conscious of the impact of my washing my clothes more regularly than others, but I can offset it against all the things I don't do, because in my mind I need balance.

Thighdentitycrisis · 07/05/2022 09:54

My bedroom and bathroom are draped in various “worn but not dirty” items.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 07/05/2022 09:55

I work outdoors with animals so generally all my work clothes have to go in the wash at the end of the day - but at home, I'll re-wear the same clothes a few times before washing them as I'm only wearing them for a few hours after work.

Agreed, those kind of comments are so annoying, 'well I do x in excess but others probably do y'. You have no clue what others do! Many people keeping washing to a minimum are also doing the same with heating, shower times, non essential car journeys and so on as it can be income related.

mydogisthebest · 07/05/2022 10:10

Well you are not meant to wash jeans very often as keep washing them is not good for them.

Same with most items of clothing really. Keep washing them unless you are washing on a cold 10 minute wash is just shortening the life of the item. Plus all the electric and water being wasted on all the unnecessary washing.

I change my knickers every day. I wear other clothing items as many times as I feel I can. If they are dirty, stained or smell then, obviously I wash them.

I wear bras for 3 or 4 days. I wear jumpers at least 3 or 4 times, tops 2 maybe 3 times depending how long they were worn for each time, skirts I don't count how many times I wear but just wash when I feel they haven't been washed for a while. Jeans I hardly ever wash unless they get dirty.

Oh and, shock horror, I usually just hang my worn clothes back in my wardrobe!

I have already responded to another comment like this but I was talking about what I do, not others. It needs to balance in my mind because I am super aware of it and there are so many judgemental comments about people who do extra washing. I do it because I have to. I'm almost certain, what with this being mumsnet and all, that plenty of 'omg how awful for the environment' comments are coming from people who give zero fucks about the environment, have no idea of their own impact on it and are dinky jumping in the wee bandwagon to put the boot in because that's how every thread here goes.

I’m disappointed that no one has turned up yet to tell us all with complete confidence that they know every detail of the personal hygiene habits of complete strangers they pass in the street (obviously when said strangers are not meeting the poster’s standards in some way). They never speak to these people as far as I can tell, or bother to explain how they know the intimate details of their lives. But they Just Know.

Also, I confidently expect someone to turn up and tell us that it is because All Brits Are Dirty Mingers. Because that’s a thing too.

Still, the day is young!

Yes there's usually someone who can tell from 20 paces whether someone has a scented pantyliner, or has only has a sink wash rather than a shower that day!
And that we're all kidding ourselves that other people aren't really retching under their desk because we're wearing the same hoodie for 2 days in a row. 🙄

I change underwear every day, everything else gets worn until it's dirty.“

this. Thought it’s what everyone did? I don’t smell 🤷‍♀️

Moon22 · 07/05/2022 10:18

Yes I always re wear. And have all of my life. Obviously if they were gym clothes or something, they would go straight in wash but everything else (not underwear, socks) gets multiple wears- you just know when things are ready for a wash. I often find I'm washing things like jeans just to get the shape back in them, rather than really needing to be washed.
I do remember a (so called) friend telling me I was 'disgusting' for re using towels on holiday! She washed hers every day. No thank you- better things to be doing on holiday than daily laundry!

Apologies, I hadn't seen your later comment. I was responding to your earlier comment saying that you probably have less of an environmental impact than people who think it's generally unnecessary to wash clothes frequently. Fair enough if you have a medical condition and a low impact overall it's just your generalisation about others I disagree with. Similar comments pop up a lot on these threads so can get annoying.

Natsku · 07/05/2022 10:26

Trousers get worn for several days before washing, I just put them on a table in the bathroom when I go to bed and put them on again in the morning. Top might get worn twice, might not. Hoody gets worn for about a week before washing. In winter I wear a vest too and I'll wear that for two days before washing and taking a new one. Socks and underwear change daily obviously.
I wear workout clothes for my morning workout and those get hung up afterwards to air out and I'll use them for about a week before washing.

Fizbosshoes · 07/05/2022 10:27

@Moon22
I had a friend who showered twice a day and used a new bath towel and face towel each time, and another separate towel if washing their hair (I don't think they washed their hair twice a day) so potentially 5 towels per day for 1 person!! Ive no idea if their whole family had the same routine.
Funnily enough when she moved out of home and had to do her own washing, she slightly relaxed her standards!

ilovesushi · 07/05/2022 10:35

I spend three months many years ago working in a desert in the US. Accommodation was very very basic and washing facilities - for clothes and bodies - pretty minimal. We did a lot of 'rewearing' and it was a revelation. I had merino wool socks which I wore for about 10 days at a time. No one stank but we weren't odourless either. It definitely made me rethink the excessive clothes washing I was doing and chill out about putting everything in the wash after just one wear.

fallfallfall · 07/05/2022 01:38

I don’t wear sweaty or soiled clothing twice, but tops pants socks can usually be worn a second time.

Socks and knickers? Are you for real???

spidersenses · 07/05/2022 10:38

I never rewear anything. I have a really sensitive sense of smell! Can't even stand the smell of deodorant on tops that have been worn once.

Guessing you have fragrance free washing powder? Though, I'm odd, I don't mind the faint smell of deodorant at all but can't stand the smell of excessive washing powder or fabric conditioner when I buy things second hand.

TolkiensFallow · 07/05/2022 10:46

before Children I could merrily rewear clothes but now they smell after one wear

Ohwowhoho · 07/05/2022 10:51

Depends on the item and when I next plan on wearing it again, If it isn’t dirty but I’ve worn it all day and don’t plan on wearing it again for a while then I’ll wash it. I wash all knickers, socks & bras after once use. Bra could probably go longer but I don’t wear them often and I’m not putting worn clothes in the drawer with clean ones. I also wash all tops and tighter fitting dresses after one wear due to armpit area.

Can get a few wears from jumpers and jeans. Floatier dresses I will assess. Might wear leggings twice. Gym kit obviously washed after one use.

BigWoollyJumpers · 07/05/2022 10:51

The smell I can't abide is the very strong washing scent. There is nothing worse than being out in the countryside in the lovely fresh air, and passing someone who smells strongly of washing scent. There is one in particular, which is quite common, that I really hate. I have to use the least flowery one I can find.

I suppose in that case, I prefer the smell of slightly unwashed clothes!!

Pants could mean trousers if that poster is from US.
