Re-wear your clothes?

Do you do that? Re-wear them?

What do you do when you wear your clothes again (apart from keep downwind of other people of course!)

I don’t wear sweaty or soiled clothing twice, but tops pants socks can usually be worn a second time.

Is socks not something you would change daily considering feet are prone to smell? Socks get sweaty too. It's like wear the same underwear twice.

BertieBotts · 07/05/2022 06:46

I do the sniff test. Since DC I can't generally wear a top more than once although I was brought up to wear them for a few days. Hormones I guess have made my sweat more stinky.

I never rewear soiled or clothes I have sweated in.

I would put something in the wash if I had spilled something on it but don't you sweat every day?

BertieBotts · 07/05/2022 06:46

I can't stand the idea of re-wearing worn socks. If I've had a sock on for more than a few seconds it's classed as dirty to me. DH leaves the kids' socks out and will put them back on the next day - it's gross!

I never wear cotton socks more than a day but my wool winter socks don't smell if worn for two. My feet don't get sweaty in winter.

Zonder · 07/05/2022 06:56

Change undies every day but tops, skirts and trousers get worn several days (not consecutively). I sniff them each time but I also use antiperspirant so don't sweat much. So bad for the environment to wash clean clothes.

ShirleyPhallus · 07/05/2022 07:00

I’m disappointed in this thread. I was hoping for a lot more batshit “I only wear an item of clothes for a few hours and if you don’t you’re a dirty old minger posts”

Spudlet · 07/05/2022 07:06

Don’t worry, I’m sure they’ll be along soon!

I don’t rewear underwear or socks,
and I always wear fresh work clothes daily, for hygiene reasons related to my job. I also only use sports kit once, because I don’t like wearing stinky kit, and because I think dried sweat must increase the risk of chafing. Everything else does several wears, spills notwithstanding. I have a nose - I perform a sniff check after a day’s wear. I’ve never noticed anyone moving away, or standing upwind only 🤷‍♀️

Spudlet · 07/05/2022 07:08

Heavy wool jumpers get worn quite a few times in winter because washing them and drying them flat is a chore! They always have a clean long sleeved top underneath so no direct contact with my skin.

I haven't RTFT but this really surprised me - do many people do this? The constant changing sounds like hard work although is it worth it because it saves loads on washing and energy bills?

I do this. I am disabled and too ill to do much and have had lots of surgery. If I go out, I come home, remove my bra, leggings and put on lounging about clothes that I live and sleep in. I often go to bed during the day so comfort is a must. I don’t go out much and not for long periods. If someone comes over, if I am up to it, I get changed. I normally change these lounging about clothes daily as they’ll have been on for 24 hours. But a nicer item can be reworn a few times.

Dh also gets changed when he comes home from work into comfortable clothes and what with all the sport he does, these are only worn for a few hours in the evening so he changes them after a few days wear. He also works fewer hours than in the past and no longer wears pristine suits, cuff links and ties. His shirts don’t smell so he decided to hang and rewear his work shirt. Two days = less washing but I don’t think there is less washing overall than just wearing one thing one day… especially if factoring in all the sports clothes, which cannot be reworn.

drawacircleroundit · 07/05/2022 07:12

Now, you see, this is interesting. Sometimes I can wear jersey-style tops for days with absolutely no problem. Then something more aesthetically pleasing will need to be washed after a few hours. Sometimes my armpits smell like a public toilet; other times there is no scent at all. I don't know if it is the fabric or me.

speakout · 07/05/2022 07:14

Pretty much the same as others.
But I change a lot though the day.
Morning is gym gear for a class, then home to work, where I wear my comfies, baggy jumpers and jogging bottoms with holes in them- but clean. I usually have a trip out to the shop/post office, so I change again to go out, then back into my sloppy joes when I get back.
T shirts, underwear and socks are fresh daily. Other stuff lasts a couple of days.

Chaoslatte · 07/05/2022 07:14

Surely everyone wears clothes more than once if they’re not dirty? The only things I would never wear more than once are knickers and socks. Everything else depends on the sniff test and whether it physically has something on it.

torquewench · 07/05/2022 07:17

I think exH's record was 12 days for the same outfit - he'd sleep in a t shirt then wear it all day under the same fleece. He wear the same jeans with them ... and the same socks and undies 🤢
He'd do gardening and work in his workshop then wonder why the furniture looked grubby.
In the end I'd just pick his things up off the floor and shove them in the machine on their own special wash.
And he'd wear shoes in the house no matter what. He was a bit odd tbh he'd never just slob in pj's or trackies and wouldn't come downstairs of a morning unless he was wearing said minging outfit. I even bought him some overalls but he never once wore them.

VintageGibbon · 07/05/2022 07:20

I rewear everything except underwear and gym clothes. I used to wash jeans after 2 wears but now leave it to about 5 wears unless they get grubby.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 07/05/2022 07:23

Surely it depends on how sweaty you are, how oily your skin is, and whether you are in contact with other people? Personally, with the exception of pants, I rewear things until they need a wash, be it from sweat or dirt, food smells, or before they get that musty smell from oily skin. On the whole I trust my nose. I'm not much of a sweater, and my skin is on the dry side, so I can safely rewear things I hope!

Good point. When I said dh wears his clothes a few times, I meant decades… since he retired actually… I otoh used to change my underwear so frequently that I decided it was more efficient to just to look at my knickers and put them straight in the wash without bothering to wear them. So much more efficient.

Perhaps we need a sheet changing or towel washing thread. Wink

Re-wear your clothes?
AntarcticTern · 07/05/2022 07:24

I change socks and knickers every day. Everything else gets re-worn at least once unless it smells (I sniff the armpits) or has a mark on it.

I think we should all try to do less washing for environmental reasons, not to mention the cost of energy.

TeenPlusCat · 07/05/2022 07:32

I read these threads and wonder how some people ever have time for living they must be so busy washing drying and folding things I would consider still clean enough to wear. What a waste of time and water and electricity.

PuppyMonkey · 07/05/2022 07:33

I tend to wear jeans two days - and skirts are great I think as they don’t really get smelly or dirty at all so only really wash them occasionally. Bras go a few wears before washing too.

everything else is usually a wear once thing. I’ve got some jeggings too and they only get worn once as they get very whiffy round the crotch ime.

Verbena87 · 07/05/2022 07:34

Check them with my eyes for dirt/stains/dropped food, and my nose for smell. If they look and smell ok, put them on and get on with my day. Not tricky, surely?

My jeans will get reworn quite a lot unless I’ve been gardening or spilled stuff on myself. Loose wool jumpers the same. Knickers and socks fresh every day, tops that go near my armpits usually fresh every day as well.

Fedupsotired · 07/05/2022 07:35

I work 3 days a week so have a rolling wardrobe of three outfits that get worn twice over the two weeks and then get washed. In the winter I will wear a top more than once (I would wash my vest daily) and cardigans go longer still but in the summer a T-shirt only lasts a day. I tend to hang my clothes up on my curtain pole so they can air.

I read somewhere that you aren't meant to wash expensive jeans very often at all and just spot clean.

I think some people get a bit overexcited about clean clothes and it's easy when you are washing for one person but throw in a couple of children and you'd be washing all the time (not to mention the environmental impact).

I have specific dog walking jeans which can get muddy so they stay in a box in the utility room and will be worn a few times or I'd have to have loads of dog walking clothes 🤷🏼‍♀️

carefullycourageous · 07/05/2022 07:36

Of course I re-wear clothes that are not dirty or smelly, doing anything else is illogical.

If it is dirty or smelly, I wash it.
If it has a small mark on it but is not dirty or smelly, I spot wash it.
If it is not dirty or smelly, I re-wear it.

CottonSock · 07/05/2022 07:36

I wear things until they are dirty or smelly.

carefullycourageous · 07/05/2022 07:39

They are basically workwear.

motogirl · 07/05/2022 07:40

I rewear (obviously not underwear or anything dirty or sweaty), just air at the end of the bed
