What is the unlikeliest career that someone you went to school with ended up doing?

Shamelessly stolen from Reddit. Did anyone you went to school with end up with a surprising career.

Girl I did my a levels with was a county athletics champion and one of the smartest kids in school. She went on to be a singer in a mediocre girl band.

And I've no idea where the weird smiley came from!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 28/04/2022 20:09

Someone I was at university with is now the Welsh Health Minister

Greentomatoes21 · 28/04/2022 20:17

She works for Tiktok via her business selling incredible life-sized realistic cakes for thousands of pounds!

The worst behaved boy from my Primary school (have a very vivid memory of him standing on a table and pissing on the teacher's desk) became a priest.

In contrast, the rather hard-line evangelist who was head of the sixth form Christian union ended up, among other things, helping run a gay nightclub.

BowlMovement · 28/04/2022 20:24

Eurovision song contestant (in recent years). She was always treating us to one of her homemade songs of an end of term assembly.

Someone I went to school with has ended up a very successful chef, and he's been on TV quite a bit. If you'd have told me he'd end up doing that when he was at school, there's NO WAY I would have believed you. But fair play to him.

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 28/04/2022 20:29

I went to school with a guy who is a mega famous footballer who has played for England many times!

He was very quiet and unassuming at school!

Floydthebarber · 28/04/2022 20:30

Male escort. It was only a short lived career I think because his clients weren't the glamorous older women he'd envisioned but gay men.

Chocolatier9 · 28/04/2022 20:33

A mousy, quiet type a few years above me married into an incredibly rich and famous family, household name sort of people.

splendidsue · 28/04/2022 20:37

girl who i taught has ended up being in a very high profile translation and cultural role in the middle east. would never have thought it

MelvinThePenguin · 28/04/2022 20:37

Nobody famous had ever come out of either my primary or secondary schools. The latter used to regularly wheel out an obscure classical musician to play at events every year. Pupils who were at the schools at the same time as me have changed that quite considerably, so between them they now have their pick of:

  • An Olympic gold medallist (gold post box near the school to boot)
  • A successful solo recording artist
  • One of the most followed bloggers in the world (used to be #1 on Pinterest, not sure now)
  • A record label owner (niche, but impressive nonetheless)
  • A Harvard professor
All of them rather unexpected. The singer, although considered very talented by many now, was even turned down for the school talent show.
Changingmynameyetagain · 28/04/2022 20:50

One girl I went to school with reads the local news on ITV and one of the boys is a paparazzi photographer other than that most of my school friends went on to do rather normal jobs, no one famous really.

Baggal1983 · 28/04/2022 20:58

@NotAScoobyToBeSeen you presume too much. I did not imply that she slept with someone to become a partner at the law firm - that is your personal interpretation. As I said in my post: she was not a good student (neither sharp or academically gifted) hence me (and others) wondering how she became partner (even without her previous escort job, I would have wondered the same given her poor grades during her LLB and LLM). So, perhaps you would like to withdraw your comment about ''my horrible attitude''? Thank you.

Baggal1983 · 28/04/2022 21:01

Oh and one other thing @NotAScoobyToBeSeen she was a prostitute during her studies, not as a teenager - that would be illegal (even in The Netherlands where she is living 😉)

purpleboy · 28/04/2022 11:17

Mine is the current chancellor of the exchequer Grin

Stories please!

MartinMartinMarti · 28/04/2022 21:01

Bullshit Baggal. If you're going to make a nasty comment (and I agree it was) at least own it.

BiscuitLover3678 · 28/04/2022 21:09

Very irritating desperate social climber who tried to get into the popular groups but failed many times and was regularly bullied (not by me, I might add) has now married into a very wealthy family and had her babies at the Lindo wing, Princess Kate style photos for each of her three daughters of course. She looks gorgeous and good for her. Not sure she works. 😄

Incredibly intelligent girl who did 6 a levels and had abusive parents had an absolute breakdown at uni and has been working in retail for the last 10 years.

Annoying loud girl became a journalist for a top newspaper.

Apart from the lots of regular and mostly professional jobs. I went to an academic school. Everyone was pretty able really, but it seems the confident kids generally did the best. Maybe it would be less the case in a different school.

SweatyChamoisPad · 28/04/2022 21:09

We had a lad in our class who came to our school for a couple of years when the war in the Lebanon was raging - one parent was Lebanese and one English. First he became a weatherman on Lebanese TV and then presented the Middle Eastern Deal or No Deal!

Baggal1983 · 28/04/2022 21:10

Again your interpretation @MartinMartinMarti . Let me clarify: it was well known that she was escorting during her studies and she had rather poor grades - not exactly corporate partner material, quite the contrary.

I never implied that she used her body to become partner at all. In fact, I believe that if the law firm would have known about her past, it would have been a reason not to give her the trainee job back in the day as such a past is a bit frowned upon as you might be able to imagine.

In any event, despite her past, she did quite well for herself.

Lelophants · 28/04/2022 21:13

One girl is now a famous circus acrobatic (shows like circque du soleil). She literally travels with a circus! Astounded me. She was always into dance and things but I had no idea.

Alightjacket · 28/04/2022 21:15

Nasty bitch of a girl who bullied my group of friends but mostly my best friend for being a) a goth and b) gay - she's now a senior sister/nurse in the same trust I work in. She doesn't even remember me.

oobedobe · 28/04/2022 21:16

Prime Minister, not of UK though...

chisanunian · 28/04/2022 21:19

One of my schoolfriends works for a company that trains animals and birds (including owls...!) for the film and tv industry.

clareykb · 28/04/2022 21:28

I went to school with an actor who played a very well known TV detective's side kick (clue..I went to school in Newcastle)..wasn't hugely amazing at drama at school. Husband went to school with one of s club 7 but I can't remember which one

Thedogisdrivingmemad · 28/04/2022 21:37

Presumably in fairy circles...
