Shamelessly stolen from Reddit. Did anyone you went to school with end up with a surprising career.

Girl I did my a levels with was a county athletics champion and one of the smartest kids in school. She went on to be a singer in a mediocre girl band.

They play in Harry Styles's band now. So gutted to not have stayed in touch!

Was at school with quite a shy, sweet girl who would occasionally mention how much she loved ballet. None of us really had an idea of how devoted she was to dance, so whenever she’d talk about ballet class or days off school for ballet-related activities somehow it didn’t quite register that she was at a very high level. Had articles about her in the local paper etc.
Anyway, we both took sports GCSE in the late 80s and had to do a demonstration for the class of a sport we did outside of school. She came in in all her ballet kit, pointe shoes etc., set the whole floor up, and danced just amazingly. I don’t think I’ve ever been so gobsmacked in my life! We all believed that she was going to go professional after that.
And she did! She left after GCSEs to go to the Royal Ballet School and ended up dancing w the company for years. Retired about a decade ago & now works as a ballet teacher at another big company. I sometimes watch videos of her on YouTube and can’t help feeling proud - we went to school in the NE where sadly not many other people went on to have success, so I’m glad that her dreams came true.

I fancied a boy in my year who was very academic and who also spent a lot of his spare time watching fairly sophisticated films.

He became a documentary-maker and won an Emmy award at a young age. Sadly for me, he married someone else.

A girl I was very good friends with at school trained as a surveyor, then had a religious conversion and became a missionary in Africa!

I think that is hands down the strangest job a schoolfriend ended up with. She still does it and occasionally emails news, though I haven’t actually seen her in years.

A girl in my year HATED school and would always mitch off . She done well in her GCSEs because she's quite clever even though most of the time she was anywhere but in the classroom. She's now a head teacher at a secondary school.

A boy in my English class was super shy. Lovely boy but very quiet and kept himself to himself. He now lives in Thailand, is married with children and has a very successful company which has made him a multimillionaire.

There were also two girls at my school who were excellent dancers. I think they’d both trained hard from a young age.

One became a professional ballerina. The other became a corporate lawyer.

Someone I went to school with (I think she was a couple of years above me) was a Bond Girl.

Chaoslatte · 28/04/2022 14:44

Boy in my sibling’s year became a pro footballer
A girl in my year became a lingerie model as a friend found out by chance when online shopping!
And we also had a would-be architect who went off the rails a bit - I think dropped out of uni and became a shot girl in a club

I girl I was friends with in school liked to drink a lot. She would miss school on Mondays from out drinking in the pubs on Sunday night because drinking on Friday and Saturday night wasn't enough for her either. She had summer work in kitchen as an assistant to the chef so she was choppi g vegetables as an example. She was happy with that job. I always presumed she would have went into hospitality for a career. We lost touch after school. Checked her up on Facebook and she's a doctor in science and a lecturer in a university.

Not really a surprising one, but someone I admire for their dedication!

An old school friend always said she wanted to be a marine biologist. Never considered doing anything else and she is now a marine biologist working on the great barrier reef published in Nat Geo and has a PhD.

She was so sure of what she wanted to do at age 11, and actually did it!

Race horse owner (successful) he used to go down the 'bookies' on his lunchbreak in sixth form and walk round with a copy of the Racing Post

A girl I went to school with was so naughty and disruptive. She’s now a head teacher!

A lad who didn't seem to have much going for him - apart from having a rep for being a bit of a prat. A few years after we'd left school, I was watching Top of the Pops and there he was performing his No.1 single! Not one of us had the slightest idea he was musical. He's been a household name since the 80's.

FromOurHatsToOurFeet · 28/04/2022 18:17

Not the most unusual profession but I went to school with someone who is now an actress. The unusual thing is that she's changed nationality, accent and is 5 years younger than she was.

NotAScoobyToBeSeen · 28/04/2022 19:52

@Baggal1983 plenty of stories on here of people changing as they get older, quite a horrible attitude to suggest she slept her way to being partner if you have no clues other than her behaviour as a teenager/young adult. I presume you've matured since you graduated and she could well have done the same.

MoiraQueen · 28/04/2022 19:55

One girl renovates houses for a living and is sometimes on TV. Not that unusual, but she was definitely not the type of girl 😏 who you'd imagine being up a ladder with a painbrush
