I'm wondering why he accepted that invitation given that with Tory Home he's now officially the least popular member of the Cabinet. He's going to be slaughtered.

He's not going to get an easy ride. Great questions already. Really articualate anger and distress there.

Justine (who is sifting) can see the majority if not all of the questions so far are from genuine regulars as well like me, not from recently-joined opposition plants and SPADs.

I hope this is reflected in the webchat question selection and the answers, and that the media pick it up.

I live in a true-blue tory area , I can't see an upset here :(

Nor did they in Chesham and Amersham or North Shropshire until it happened. There are about 40 seats where the LibDems are second, some as in Raab's seat, quite closely. It's probably unlikely, but if the LDs won all those then whoosh Johnson's majority is gone.

Peregrina · 25/04/2022 14:31

I've just looked at the Rishi thread. What I want to know now is where are the questions from Janiie and Clavinova, telling him how wonderful he is?

L1ttledrummergirl · 25/04/2022 14:43

I've left a comment but haven't asked a question yet. Need to have a think so will ask later.

DuncinToffee · 25/04/2022 15:06

Haven't read the Sunak thread yet but here is his approval rating

Sky News
Boris Johnson speaking about the MoS article on Angela Rayner.

"I thought it was the most appalling load of sexist, misogynist tripe.. & if we ever find out who was responsible, I don't know what we'll do with them, but it will be the terrors of the earth"

Adam Bienkov

On Boris Johnson’s sudden opposition to misogyny in politics, a reminder that his government blocked attempts to make misogyny a hate crime just two months ago.

It's the old ' red wall ' voters the other parties need to win round if there is a snap election : it all hinges on them and how they feel about the conservative leadership and if it's worth carrying on with them in power.
I can't see many being convinced by KS either to be honest ( thats just my opinion though ) but who knows?
I live in a true-blue tory area , I can't see an upset here :(
The 5th may council elections might give a bit of an answer though. Might be interesting

Many of us who know North Shropshire well, could not see that deeply conservative area electing anything other than a Tory MP. If there was a snap election my prediction is the Tories would lose some True Blue seats as well as some Red Wall seats. Whether that would be enough to kick them out is a different question.

It reads to me that he is weaponising a general election and gambling on the fact that many previous Tory voters also won’t vote Labour and either vote an independent or Liberal/Green (which are no threat to him) or abstain, both leaving him with a majority to retain power, not a large majority - either from the actual turnout or eligible electorate - but a majority. He knows the public rarely take note of the finer figures that make these things up.

He understands the game and the public and I can’t argue against this logic because it’s demonstrably true. It’s an insult but it’s what happens.

I agree with this.

We know he's someone who doesn't think the rules apply to him. Therefore to get what he wants he knows how to play the game.

Piggywaspushed · 25/04/2022 17:11

I think in a snap election , the Tories would lose swathes of seats in remain places like Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

I think you’re right. And some of the red wall seats - which are still waiting for any sign of “levelling up” - have tiny majorities. In some cases only a few hundred people need to change their vote and the MP will change. Remember Johnson thanking them for lending him their vote?

We need a Labour/LibDem pact not to stand against each other in seats where one has a half decent chance of ousting the Conservatives. I think that might make a difference.

Maybe he thinks his lovely smile and boyish charm is going to win us all over. We can't really not love Rishi can we. Or so he thinks.

What’s this ‘terrors of the earth’ bull crap? 1. He still has to follow process 2. We’ve witnessed how he operates, he doesn’t sack anybody just lets the media loose until they quit. He couldn’t inflict a mild surprise never mind ‘terrors of the earth’.

It’s like watching blackadder do Putin.

Boris Johnson was talking on the weekend about cats or something : I'm surprised there wasn't a thread about it as he sounded deranged for a minute ( I know , what's new ? )
It might have been whilst he was in India ?
It was brief, but I couldn't make out what he was on about ?
A bit like his statement about Angela Raynor !

The "terrors of the earth" is a reference to King Lear.

He just can't stop showing off with overblown language.

Notonthestairs · 25/04/2022 18:34

We all know that the quoted Tory MP will never be investigated, let alone revealed and the terrors of the earth nonsense will come to nothing.

the80sweregreat · 25/04/2022 18:35

I thought it was a biblical reference at first to be honest ! (Now he is a Catholic etc etc)
He must just quote Shakespeare a lot I bet.
Takes him back to his A level years.

I thought it was a reference to Pritti Patel.

Blossomtoes · 25/04/2022 18:44

The "terrors of the earth" is a reference to King Lear.

Oh that’s embarrassing. I’m an English graduate and didn’t recognise it. 😳

Piggywaspushed · 25/04/2022 18:47

It's an unfortunate reference isn't it?

A 'foolish, fond old man' full of impotent, misogynistic rage who can't even conceptualise or articulate what revenge he will wreak on his 'ungrateful' daughters. So then he wanders about on a heath with a fool and loses all his power and his mind uttering wild, uncontrolled monologues,. Hmm.

the80sweregreat · 25/04/2022 18:50

Piggy, seems that Lear and Boris Johnson have things in common then after all ?..
Did anyone hear him muttering about cats the other day ? I think I am the only one who caught that gem!!
