How can it be "as bad" when he wasn't found to have broken the law? Confused

Roussette · 24/04/2022 13:58

They are absolutely as bad for a man so desperate to be the future prime minister. With every day that passes, Starmer's chances slip further and further away

I would've said completely the opposite. Why shouldn't the Leader of the opposition be desperate to be PM? There'd be something very wrong if he wasn't!

A beer with 3 others after a work meeting that's been investigated by the Police and no action taken
versus
a PM who attended 6 or 7 parties, who has received a FPN, who lied about it to Parliament, and who is still being investigated by the Police for the other 6 functions, one possibly held in his own home.

No contest

Of course Johnson was never "desperate to be PM" - he just fell in to the job Grin

itsgettingweird · 24/04/2022 14:00

Thing is the kier beer and Johnson's parties aren't the same thing.

KS was actually having a work meeting whilst different rules applied.
It was never about what they were eating and drinking.

Johnson had various parties. They weren't work events. He then claimed not to know the laws - he came in tv every night and told us about - and therefore didn't believe he'd done anything wrong.

If KS had been in that room with his wife and his builder from back home I'd be saying exactly the same thing about him.

Fwiw if Rishi had merely turned up to a work meeting and then left the room when he realised there were Jon work people there I'd be against his FPN too. In fact I'm still undecided because the facts haven't been published yet whether I think he should have got one or not.

I'm 100% sure Mrs Johnson should have been fined (and was) and the interior designer too (but we haven't been told if they did or not yet?) they are not employees of DS and should not have been in the meeting room as it's not their place of work.

The same as if I was sat in my classroom with people in my bubble eating cake I'd not expect a fine. I was following the governments guidance in my place of work.

If I'd have invited a friend into my classroom to eat lunch who didn't work there then that was a social gathering.

However it's not really just about what he was doing. It's about how he lies and misleads parliament and the public and therefore about whether he's broken the ministerial code.

DuncinToffee · 24/04/2022 14:02

Can't believe we are back to discussing Keir's beer, things must be getting desperate.

Agree. Hopefully Sue Gray report will shed some light here.

HarrietPierce · 24/04/2022 14:06

You can't even compare them The whole Keir's beer debacle is a ridiculous distraction.

Roussette · 24/04/2022 14:14

The whole Keir's beer debacle is a ridiculous distraction

In a way, I welcome it because it shows complete and utter desperation to justify Johnson's appalling actions. And is laughable.

Yes the Sue Gray report will be a huge missing piece of the jigsaw.

Yep. Maybe they have got wind of Call-Me-Churchill's next fine.

newnamethanks · 24/04/2022 16:28

Thanks Roussette. I see the 'beer, they're all the same, he's doing his best, it wasn't a party, it wasn't a cake, etc' mob are galloping over as well. Desperate times require desperate measures. I hear these excuses trotted out, by an assortment of different people on various radio talk programmes. Different people but the same words and phrases. I assume there's a Tory phrase meister on social media who thinks them up then distributes them to the faithful to disperse. To hear is to obey. It's very tiresome that there's little or no indication of original thought. Still, that's what cut and paste is for, presumably.

Peregrina · 24/04/2022 16:41

It was definitely the case post 2016 when writing to a Tory MP about Brexit. Whatever question you put, the party answer came back. Comparing notes, with friends with other MPs you could tell that they were regurgitating that week's crib sheet.

HarrietPierce · 24/04/2022 16:49

And why when some tory MP is rolled out to defend Johnson do they use "He got Brexit done" as though it's some sort of success . Rees -Mogg even had to ask The Sun readers to try and find some benefits for him to espouse.

If Boris Johnson does ( eventually) resign because of the fines etc then I can see why the the Conservatives would then start on Keir starmer to resign too or Nicola Sturgeon for not wearing a mask indoors or any of the other MPs who broke the lockdown laws as well in the last few years.
I'm not a fan of Boris Johnson at all and I agree he lied in parliament and they were well aware it was a party ( but trying to say they were not parties and only work gatherings ) and they broke the laws, but so did KS , even though the restrictions were not as bad at that time and he was on official business having a break ( but so was Boris Johnson too , so they say )
I didn't see KS being interviewed today , but he will have to answer questions too about what he was doing at that time.
The tories will cling onto this ( the same as Labour have since November last year) and it'll be the old ' tit for tat' politics we always get.
The police were also at number 10 during party gate too, but it's taken months before any fines were issued
My neighbours are conservatives and mentioned K S to me the other day , ' he did it too ' they argued , smugly ! I couldn't really disagree! This is probably how Boris Johnson will stay where he is.
It's clear that many politicians and some of the scientists too thought they were above the law
It is a mess , I do think he should be called out for lying , but the parties will just bring up KS's meeting and his beer and it will still be all rumbling on by next Christmas at this rate.

The lying to parliament is why he should resign. If KS or NS did something wrong, admitted it then there isn't an issue. KS was along way from home and had to eat, Boris Johnson was either in the garden or the building where he lived and when he was ambushed he could have retreated to his flat.

HarrietPierce · 24/04/2022 18:00

The Sturgeon mask thing in the Barbers lasted seconds and she put it back on when she realised her mistake and apologised. The Tories have to clutch at any straws to distract from the lying buffoon who unfortunately "leads" the country.

Let's unpack this:

The first 18 words or so are entirely unnecessary. Just begin 'I deplore'...

It wasn't 'anonymous' now was it?

They apparently only respect her 'as a parliamentarian'.

I deplore the misogyny directed at Angela Rayner in the Mail on Sunday today.

Fixed it for them

May I not be the first to deplore the misogyny directed at Boris Johnson and other men please.

Fulmine · 24/04/2022 22:09

DuncinToffee · 24/04/2022 12:07

Cake Roussette

For objectivity, this is Johnson's (and Dorries) reaction

As much as I disagree with @AngelaRayner on almost every political issue I respect her as a parliamentarian and deplore the misogyny directed at her anonymously today.

The Mail is going to hate being accused of encouraging misogyny.

Roussette · 24/04/2022 22:51

I'm just confused why BJ and Dorries have both said 'anonymously' when the article specifically said it's Tory MPs giving this story to the journo

👀

The Times @Steven_Swinford reporting tonight that the full Sue Gray report will be so “damning” for Boris Johnson that he’ll have little choice but to quit as PM thetimes.co.uk/article/sue-gr…

DowningStreetParty · 25/04/2022 07:12

if Starmer did end up getting an FPN for Durham. How would Johnson handle it? He couldn't call for Starmer to resign. He wouldn't be able to weaponise it without blowing his own head off

100%. This is why holding on to Johnson is such a liability. He’s got no moral authority over anyone else. While him clinging on corrupts politics in general which is a complete scandal in itself, it also hamstrings the whole Tory party on criticising anyone else, ever so makes practical politics impossible. They’re complete idiots for keeping him on going into the local elections.

Peregrina · 25/04/2022 07:13

But loads of his activities have been absolutely damning, and he hasn't quit yet. The man has no shame whatever.

The Tory MPs waking up to the fact that they might lose their seats come the next election might just make them tell him "Stand still while we stick the knife in." The next election is now only two years away at the latest, and since Covid has been going on for over two years now, it's highly debatable whether people who have suffered with the restrictions while Johnson ignored them, will forget so quickly.

'Sue Gray report ‘so damning Boris Johnson will have to quit’

OP posts:
newnamethanks · 25/04/2022 07:28

But relax everyone. Boris, apparently, has apologised. He's apologised for something he says he hasn't done, ie ogle Angela's Ankles. Er, OK then. Meanwhile, the raft of things he has most definitely done, and not apologised for, goes on and on. Truth-twisting doesn't begin to describe it.

Notonthestairs · 25/04/2022 07:31

Johnson has told friends he has been assured he'll one receive one FPN
