Seasalt - why the Mumsnet love?

LouB76 · 22/04/2022 12:03

I'm just not feeling it. I keep seeing mumsnetters raving about Seasalt clothes but I can never see anything remotely stylish on their website. Am I missing something?

And where do you shop OP??? Perhaps we can all have a go at critiquing those shops.

Fidodidit · 23/04/2022 18:41

I love Finisterre. Cornish and good ethical credentials directory.goodonyou.eco/brand/Finisterre VERY good for dog walking

No, I'm really interested @LouB76 ??

By fussy I mean trims and extra zips etc that serve no practical purpose

One of the reasons I like Seasalt, is that it DOESN'T have fancy trims and extra zips etc. There are no fastenings and trims of any sort on any item I own. Every top and tunic just pulls over my head, and they and the cardigans and jumpers are entirely unadorned, apart from the pattern within the fabric.

Are you thinking of joules? I really dislike their stuff because of all the embroidery and random flowers or dog stuff that look like ill-placed afterthoughts.

I like their clothes, I wear them to work, comfortable but respectable.

Same. I've worn what MN might consider frumpy for years because I like the natural fabrics and the timeless cuts that mean I can still wear the same clothes five years from now. I like the knee length skirts and looser fitting tops because I've mostly worked in social care type jobs where it wouldn't be appropriate to sit in front of a client/service user in a mini dress or tight top.

I also really like the choice of colours, they look very natural to me. I like colours but not rainbow brights.

Also a fan of the coats.

So you won't mind sharing, then.

So my point (that you quoted) still stands then?

I don’t follow? You asked if people disagreed that people wanting waterproof coats should buy rambler brands then they should say why, so I suggested a reason. FWIW I’m not a soccer mom and have never owned a Seasalt coat. My bad weather coat is a Didkiksons since it was the only one with long enough sleeves.

I think you are confusing Seasalt with Per Una @LouB76. Seasalt might be a little too patterned, but I have never seen fussy adornments like frills, trims, extra zips etc on their clothes.

I haven't either.

This is one of the things I like about their clothes. Simple shapes and no fussiness. None of the puffy sleeves that even Toast have gone big on, lately. They make me look like a sofa.

From reading other threads about Seasalt, my take is that some posters like the image they think wearing Seasalt portrays. They think it makes them look like they are upper middle class and live in a big house in the country with an orchard and horses. They don't like anyone questioning this image they like to portray, hence the anger when anyone says anything negative about Seasalt.

Unless they are working overtime for Seasalt's marketing department that is Grin

Hmm. I'm not so sure. I have a few Seasalt pieces, but they aren't typical of their offering. I bought them because I like them, not because of an image I want to portray (and I don't like horses Grin)

Well no horses here… 😉

I’ve got 2 things from seasalt, don’t consider myself attached to any particular brand (anywhere with a 35” inside leg and long long sleeves gets my cash!) but this keeps refreshing in my ‘you’re on’ page and some of the comments are just bizarre.

How would anyone know your coat/ top/ dress was seasalt if they didn’t shop there themselves? So how is it a ‘middle class with an orchard’ ID to someone who buys from H&M?

rosinavera · 24/04/2022 12:04

@SockFluffInTheBath I agree that some comments on here are truly bizarre!!

Or....we like clothes made from natural fibres and don't really much like being called fat frumps by people we don't know.

rosinavera · 24/04/2022 12:28

Exactly@DoctorSnortles!! Some real bitchiness on this thread.

BitOutOfPractice · 24/04/2022 12:31

I think your mistake OP is expecting stylish. I find them very frumpy.

rosinavera · 24/04/2022 12:33

Then shop elsewhere @BitOutOfPractice!

megletthesecond · 24/04/2022 12:41

I never get the MN enthusiasm for most brands, boden, white stuff, hush, Seasalt etc. It all makes me look ten years older. (I'm 47 and still wear ripped jeans).

saraclara · 24/04/2022 13:00

It's bizarre that grown women on this thread are judging others (and making really weird assumptions about their motivation) based on their taste in clothes.

I buy seasalt (though only in the sales) because I have to wear cotton, theirs is soft and good quality, and it's unfussy and comfortable stuff to wear compared to joules.

I'm not out to project or prove anything through what I wear. If I met anyone who had the same requirements of their clothing as me, I'd recommend sea salt. But I don't give a damn what anyone else chooses to wear.

SockFluffInTheBath · 24/04/2022 13:04

I might be a fat frump, though I don’t much care tbh if I am. I’ve never really been into high fashion- when I was younger only long tall sally fitted me properly (enough said 🤣 ) and these days it’s easier with more widespread tall ranges but I never really got my fashion mojo going and now I cba trying to keep up with it all and binning tops because they’re too last season. I would say my style is classic (polite for frumpy? Who knows or cares) but it’s not something I can get excited about. So today I’m in a light green sweater and a denim skirt (and wellies). Not high style but no-one would die of style fright if they saw me 🤣 I think a lot of women are like me in that regard and bits and bobs from not-ASOS are fine thanks. If you don’t like it don’t wear it- goes for super-trendy stuff too.

I must admit I've just ordered some stuff especially with an extra 20%

My dh likes the socks and I've ordered some more face coverings as they may come in handy again
