Seasalt - why the Mumsnet love?

LouB76 · 22/04/2022 12:03

I'm just not feeling it. I keep seeing mumsnetters raving about Seasalt clothes but I can never see anything remotely stylish on their website. Am I missing something?

I love the cord dresses for autumn and winter, I wear a thin layer underneath, woolly tights and boots. It’s basically my winter “ uniform”.
Once you find a shape that fits there is often a new colour way each year. I’ve also got a couple of their waterproof coats , the Janelle is perfect.
Ive got a couple of their summer linen dresses but find the tops very overpriced and inferior quality so I definitely pick and choose.
I’m p65 though so you won’t want style advice from me! My 40 year old stepdaughters wouldn’t wear the dresses but have a raincoat each from Seasalt. My 55 year old friend loves the dresses but hates the coats!
everyone is different!

I've had issues with the quality of their dyes - they fade. I washed a plant hunter coat at 30 degrees as per instructions and no detergent just nick wax wash in. It came out faded at the seams and the cuffs and very fine tear on the cuffs it looked led like someone had rubbed white chalk all over it. When I took it into a Seasalt shop they accused me of lying, saying I must have used soap powder, and refused to do anything. Head office didn't answer my email and blamed it on a IT issue. I stupidly ordered another coat and they cancelled my order saying they had stock problems.

Their tops go baggy and the colour fades too.

@PuppyMonkey

OP to have seen the MN “love” for Seasalt, I take it you have been in all the Seasalt threads there have been recently which are usually full of people saying they HATE Seasalt.Confused
I've been on a few threads that have listed Seasalt, Joules, Hush, FatFace and Clarks as lived by mumsnetters. Can't see the appeal of FatFace and Joukes either. Never heard of Hush.

Clarks though. Decent winter boots.

Gah, despite the recent upgrade, the autocorrect on here is still random ☹️

Not hugely into their clothes, have never bought any regular stuff, but live & die by my warm waterproof Plant Hunter coat .... has had standing on the side of football and rubgy fields in miserable conditions, feeling very smug about how dry & warm I am !

Rubyroseyposey · 22/04/2022 13:57

I think their stuff is dire, however I'm also not their target audience 😂

MargaretThursday · 22/04/2022 14:01

Never looked at them before, but I like what I've just seen... and have bought a preworn one off ebay to try.

They remind me a bit of the old style Laura Ashley dresses-but with pockets which is definitely a plus.
I'll let you know whether I'm converted once it's come!

Pluvia · 22/04/2022 14:13

Their typical colour palette doesn't suit me. They do a lot of olive and mustard and blackish reds and khaki and they make me look even older and more tired than I am. I'm better with clear, warm, brighter colours. I really do look and feel better in a warm coral or a warm blue than in the more drab or acid shades that Seasalt specialise in. It's a shame.

Bluevelvetsofa · 22/04/2022 14:19

The clothes are OK, but I think most of them are quite expensive.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/04/2022 14:26

Lots of their colours are horrid - sludgy and so much blue. I hate blue!

Necklines too high on lots of the dresses. Lots of drab and unflattering looking droopy stuff.

It's a shame - I do like a place with natural fibres, but there's little I would/could wear there.

DinosaursEatMan · 22/04/2022 14:31

Cotton, tunics and pockets. Agree with a pp that they need to expand their colour range though. Muted and large patterned does nothing for me, I stay for the rare plain, bright items.

BottlingBurpsForGrandma · 22/04/2022 14:32

I have 3 pairs of the culottes and love them. I also love the coat I have. I did buy some boots from there but haven't worn them, I don't know why as objectively they're beautifully made but just not very "me".

I do love thr quality but there are a lot of fairly shapeless bits, muted colours etc.

User7493268965 · 22/04/2022 14:37

As mentioned upthread the boots are very good, I usually buy a pair in the sale and they are very good quality and comfortable

ArabeI · 22/04/2022 14:43

I've bought a couple of cardigans from them recently. For the price they're quite good. It's one of those places you can occasionally find something nice, and the quality is ok. I also have an old art smock -type dress, a cord mini and probably other things going back years.

But on the whole the dresses and skirts can be a bit unappealing, in my opinion. I think it's possibly the lengths, colours or styling.

That's what I thought!
amicissimma · 22/04/2022 14:47

Pockets!!!

In skirts and dresses.

MapleMay11 · 22/04/2022 14:57

Not a fan of Seasalt but I don't understand the love for lots of the brands mentioned on here such as Cos, Arket, Toast and Uniqlo in addition to Hush and several others already mentioned on this thread.

JanisMoplin · 22/04/2022 14:59

Where do you all buy your brightly coloured clothes from? Please don't say Toast; I can't afford those prices.I find sludge colours are in vogue everywhere.

The aesthetic is a bit 'religion teacher' for me but I do have a t-shirt from Seasalt that I like. I find that many places will have the odd thing that appeals even if the general look isn't my style.

ValerieCupcake · 22/04/2022 15:46

I bought a sort of burnt orange jersey dress last year with white polka dots on. First time I wore it it went bobbly. I was furious.

elfycat · 22/04/2022 15:55

Seasalt has a dress shape that really works for me (50yo, overweight Pear) so I'm buying one a season (have 4 now). I'm not keen on much of the rest of it, but might have to give it a try and see how things fit.

woodhill · 22/04/2022 16:01

The face masks were excellent as are the socks

I like their cotton tops and they wash well.

I like their jumpsuits as well

Fidodidit · 22/04/2022 16:04

I think Seasalt makes Boden look cutting edge

Badlifeday · 22/04/2022 16:11

Most of us have zero interest in being "cutting edge" though. We want to wear things that look nice and feel nice and don't make us wince when we look in the mirror.
I have a few sea salt things and they just make me feel good, that's what I'm aiming for. Oh and I imagine I live a life in Cornwall with a dog and stroll along the beach in my coat, rather than trudging through the city centre Grin
