Seasalt - why the Mumsnet love?

I'm just not feeling it. I keep seeing mumsnetters raving about Seasalt clothes but I can never see anything remotely stylish on their website. Am I missing something?

The coats are fantastic and worth every penny. Not particularly stylish I grant you but who needs style when you need a coat suitable for wind and rain.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/04/2022 17:11

There's very little love for Seasalt on MN in my experience. Personally, I love some of their stuff. I have jackets and a great winter coat. I don't particularly like their tops/Tshirts, they never seem long enough for me and aren't right in the shoulders but I have a tunic I like. I love the fabric, no polyester!

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 23/04/2022 17:16

What's the matter with being older, middle class and a failed fell hiker though? They're not harming anyone with their non fashionable clothing 🤔

On the rare occasion I even look at/in Seasalt, it's all too crazy-patterned for me! I prefer neutrals I can mix and match.

Badlifeday · 23/04/2022 17:19

I'd say frumpy is Peacocks / Bon Marche - basically just buying clothes so they don't have to wander round naked
See I don't think this is true at all OP. Those stores provide clothing at a really inexpensive price. The people I see shopping in there are mixed but the desire to buy nice looking clothing they will actually wear at a price they can actually afford seems clear. I think it's easy to forgot how much money most women actually have available for their own clothes, it's not what you would think reading style & beauty.

LouB76 · 23/04/2022 17:24

I find OP rather odd and judgemental, wanting to pidgin hole people based on what they wear . If you don't like it , go elsewhere but you must be about 5 if you think everyone should like the same stuff as you do . What harm does it do you for people to like sea salt stuff?

I appear to have touched a nerve 😂

I think this is what I mean by fussy too, along with pointless zips and trims. I don't think I explained it very well.

The basic T-shirts in Bon Marche are actually very good quality. I'm not sniffy about going into shops classed by the MN fashion police as frumpy because you can often find the odd gem there. I have an open mind.

I agreed that if you want technical outdoor clothing then you're better off swerving Seasalt / Joukes and going for Rab or Montane. Do you disagree with this, if so why?

I think mums stuck standing on the weekend pitches don’t necessarily want to look like ramblers though. They want something warm, comfortable and normal looking.

So my point (that you quoted) still stands then?

LouB76 · 23/04/2022 17:40

Ok, fair enough, I have misunderstood the word frumpy (but to be fair, I didn't describe Seasalt as frumpy).

"a dizzy mix of matronly frills, frumpy floral prints, and dotty dots"

"Sarah Jo favors frumpy-sweet cardigan-and-skirt combos straight out of the sister-wife catalog"

Nothing, I never said there was. It doesn't mean everyone should covet the style of an older failed hiker though does it.

You're starting to show your true colours, OP.

MummyBlueSky · 23/04/2022 17:47

Their winter boot slippers are the absolute bomb.

Carbiesdreamhouse · 23/04/2022 17:47

It's the cotton. Actually quite hard to find a nice cotton garment now.

Trethew · 23/04/2022 17:51

I won’t buy anything from SeaSalt again. So tired of being disappointed. The only thing that I can’t resist is the lovely colours. The clothes seem to be designed for sizes 18 upwards and scaled down for smaller sizes so the tops are very boxy. There is a sort of slant/bias in the fabrics, the zips on trousers don’t stay central, and necklines and hems go lopsided. The fabric designs are instantly recognisable like Laura Ashley prints in the 1970’s. They are expensive for what they are.

PickAChew · 23/04/2022 17:53

I have a lot of Seasalt but the more recent stuff hasn't been as good as the stuff from 5 years ago, or so. The sailor tops have definitely changed. I have some 6 year old ones that are still going strong, if a little too faded and rough to wear out of the house. They are crew necked. My more recent ones are more boat necked and haven't washed all that well. I just put 2 in the rag bin, this week as they had shrunk several inches and one had a hole in. Another one has pilled pretty badly. This is with gentle washing, 30C, small loads and air drying.

I ordered a new coat, last summer, and it looked like I'd tried on a grown up's coat. I have quite short arms but the ends of the sleeves were past my fingertips!

@PickAChew

Is this because they are now mass produced in China do you think?

Yip I find judgemental inaccurate posters very irritating

I mean if you must judge people over inconsequential stuff at least get it right

I agree, and I got complimented On a BonMarche dress I was wearing the other day.

One thing I learnt in the last few years is to buy clothes you like. Don’t worry about where they have come from, or the size.

rosinavera · 23/04/2022 18:20

I agree too!

You seem to be very sensitive to any criticism of Seasalt clothing.

I don't think they ever claimed all their clothes were made in England. The price tag would be far higher, if they were. A quick survey of my ironing basket indicates India, Vietnam and Sri Lanka for clothes ranging from 2-6 years old. None of them made in China.

So why do you think the quality has changed? Someone upthread said that they outsourced manufacturing to China a few years ago. I wondered if that was when the quality went downhill.

woodhill · 23/04/2022 18:33

I think I will continue to buy clothes made from natural fibres as much as possible

So much of high street fashion is synthetic so that's why I'm keen on Seasalt

rosinavera · 23/04/2022 18:33

@LouB76 I assume you were looking for a reaction???? Because Seasalt clothes are "not remotely stylish" to you does not mean other people think the same way.
