Seasalt - why the Mumsnet love?

LouB76 · 22/04/2022 12:03

I'm just not feeling it. I keep seeing mumsnetters raving about Seasalt clothes but I can never see anything remotely stylish on their website. Am I missing something?

I really don't like the fashion at the moment tbh

I agree the colours can be a bit dull

lakeswimmer · 22/04/2022 16:20

I'm probably their target market - 50 something rural type with no interest in looking fashionable. I don't like their prints much but in the last two years have bought two Seasalt coats in the sales (one tweedy and one waterproof) and a very simple plain linen dress (with pockets) which is a joy on a hot day. There's no shop where I like everything they sell, Seasalt included.

Dancer47 · 22/04/2022 16:34

It's a fake British brand identity and the stuff is mainly made in Chinese factories with the rest made in Vietnam and Indian sweatshops. same with Joules which I was also stupid enough to fall for as an English clothing brand.

That's interesting, considering it's relatively expensive for the high street.

Lots of their colours are horrid - sludgy and so much blue. I hate blue!

Necklines too high on lots of the dresses. Lots of drab and unflattering looking droopy stuff.

It's a shame - I do like a place with natural fibres, but there's little I would/could wear there.

Totally this, plus their dress lengths are awful abs don’t even look good on the models.

I’m really not their target audience

Innocenta · 22/04/2022 17:02

The socks are great.

RampantIvy · 22/04/2022 17:52

It depends how tall you are. I'm 5'7" and find they are ideal. I agree about the sludgy colours, but occasionally they come up with something brighter (and I like blue)

DramaAlpaca · 22/04/2022 18:05

I have some things I love from Seasalt, a couple of linen dresses which look good on me because I'm tall, and loads of their Larissa cotton shirts. Also a few pais of shoes which fit me very well. The only problem is returns to them from the EU are very expensive so I've had to stop buying from them which is a shame.

I find the occasional thing in Hush and White Stuff. I would like to buy from Fat Face but they don't ship internationally atm. I don't like Joules at all, not my thing. I live in Boden but am very picky - loud patterns are not my thing.

Herejustforthisone · 22/04/2022 19:20

I’ve found it to be a bit frumpy. Same for White Stuff, Fat Face, Joules, Boden et al.

Too true. Shame that when the manufacture of the clothing was outsourced to China that the cost remained the same! I think it’s incredibly expensive for clothing made in China.

lakeswimmer · 22/04/2022 19:26

A very high proportion of my clothes come from White Stuff, Fat Face and Boden. I even bought a top from Joules recently so I'm embracing frumpiness 😃

DoctorSnortles · 22/04/2022 20:20

I love Seasalt and Boden. This may be due to my gigantic tummy, as helpfully pointed out by a previous poster, but I don’t really give a shit. You can always avert your eyes.

taybert · 22/04/2022 21:06

Different people have different tastes and requirements. It’s absolutely shocking.

SquirrelG · 22/04/2022 21:17

I don't like a lot of their stuff, but buy a few pieces. Love the natural fabrics (I don't wear synthetics) and it's well made and comfortable - and lasts the distance!

LouB76 · 22/04/2022 21:58

Most of us have zero interest in being "cutting edge" though.

There is a big gap between Seasalt and cutting edge.

Where do you all buy your brightly coloured clothes from? Please don't say Toast; I can't afford those prices.I find sludge colours are in vogue everywhere.

Mango

I have a Rain coat that's had about 3 years worn constantly through the wetter months. It's about to go on the bin (getting frayed edges) but I paid ?£120 for it and I usually pay ?£40-50 a year on a spring/summer coat so I'm about quids in. I also used to gave a winter coat from Seasalt which lasted 4 years until it looked a bit tired.

I cannot wear much else from SS because of the cut of their garments on my very pear-shaped body. I have a dress from about 2 tears ago but it looks a bit odd with my hig bottom. I've had those sailor tops but I found they don't wash very well...they get misshapen. I the SS need to address the fact as you grow chunkier, your shape changes and the stretch of garments needs adjustment accordingly. They don't upscale the sleeve width adequately, or shoulder width. They don't adjust the cut of the trousers from size 16 up. It's quite frustrating.

saggyhairyass · 22/04/2022 22:22

I also find the patterns on the dresses/tunics/blouses to be quite dull and uninspiring. Sludgy colours is right!

FrancescaContini · 22/04/2022 22:24

JanisMoplin · 22/04/2022 12:12

Myself I don't understand the Hush love. Almost everything I see on their website is polyester or has frills down the sleeves, or both. Like this. www.hush-uk.com/alora-frilled-blouse-watercolour-floral-blue/004794-3820.html

I don’t get it either. Really over priced.

PAFMO · 22/04/2022 22:27

OctopusSay · 22/04/2022 12:16

Yes! I once "treated" myself to an order from Hush. It was all only one step away from rags IMO. The quality was appalling for the price.

I remember when the Hush product placement posts started on here, maybe 5-6 years ago. I'd never heard of them so when I saw a Hush concession in a department store I went rushing over to see.
'kin hell. And the same posters slag Per Una off. It's just all that shiny, cheap looking, synthetic, gaudy, printy, frilly awfulness. Mint Velvet is the same.
I'm sure most of the posts saying how fab they are are made by their own marketing people.

Hbh17 · 22/04/2022 22:30

Their tunics are good. I am old - I don't want tight, bright or fashionable clothes. I want comfort, decent quality & things I can wear for a reasonably long time. Better to be timeless than "on trend".

@PuppyMonkey

OP to have seen the MN “love” for Seasalt, I take it you have been in all the Seasalt threads there have been recently which are usually full of people saying they HATE Seasalt.Confused
I've been on a few threads that have listed Seasalt, Joules, Hush, FatFace and Clarks as lived by mumsnetters. Can't see the appeal of FatFace and Joukes either. Never heard of Hush.

Clarks though. Decent winter boots.

Seasalt is definitely not loved by most MNers. In fact, I had to check if this was a new thread or the one slagging Seasalt off that was started earlier this week.

Where do you shop?

ButtockUp · 22/04/2022 22:35

What I love about their clothes is that you can tumble dry their clothes and they're perfect to wear with no ironing at all.
I generally buy their linen stuff and it's great.

doggiescats · 22/04/2022 22:43

I was looking at sea salt today because of this thread…was about to order £200 of clothes and then the vet called to say that my doggie had needed 7 teeth out!! So am £300 poorer !! Definitely not buying any clothes for a while!!

LouB76 · 22/04/2022 22:53

Where do you shop?

H&M, Mango, All Saints, Uniqlo, Adidas
