Seasalt - why the Mumsnet love?

LouB76 · 22/04/2022 12:03

I'm just not feeling it. I keep seeing mumsnetters raving about Seasalt clothes but I can never see anything remotely stylish on their website. Am I missing something?

Lots of their colours are horrid - sludgy and so much blue. I hate blue!

Necklines too high on lots of the dresses. Lots of drab and unflattering looking droopy stuff.

It's a shame - I do like a place with natural fibres, but there's little I would/could wear there.

On another thread I said about the colours being dull and ugly and I got called a bitch! So be careful because there are a lot of rabid Seasalt lovers out there.

Beecham · 22/04/2022 23:04

I've just received my first ever Seasalt order of two t-shirts and a cardi. All cotton. Seems fine for basic items like this. Fills a gap.

Clawdy · 22/04/2022 23:06

Love Seasalt. Their coats are amazing, I was so lucky to get one for £44 in a sale, best bargain ever.

I live in seasalt heartland and think I own one item. It's largely frumpsville and there's only so many waterproof coats with striped linings you can own.

FrancescaContini · 22/04/2022 23:39

Where’s Seasalt heartland? St Ives?

Are men’s clothes ever described as frumpy? Just an idle muse…

Lucia23 · 22/04/2022 23:50

I won best dressed at work last Christmas and I wear Seasalt 😃

Like some have mentioned I have a curvy/hourglass figure and the clothes fit me very well. A lot of other brands don't. So I choose pieces, like their denim blazer, and pair it with other stylish dresses etc

Not exactly...
On a thread asking why it was difficult to find Seasalt branches in London, you said
"Seasalt is full of such dull and ugly colours so maybe Londoners have taste?"
Posters then replied with:
"What a bitchy comment" and "don't be facetious"

FWIW, I don't do dull colours either. (though I do have 9 stripy tops from Seasalt, theirs are the best quality/price apart from Joules, but Joules are a bit too heavy fabric for when I want a Breton)

I rather imagine it was your slagging off the population outside of London, don't you?

@FrancescaContini No- and nor is the word "grandad" an insult on clothes threads like "granny" inevitably is. MN is full of these ageist double standards and some of us have been asking HQ for years to do something about the not-so-casual ageism and misogyny pervading even the humble stripy t shirt.

What kind of employer has a best dressed competition? I mean, even as a "joke" at Christmas that's not right, surely?

SScoobiedoo · 23/04/2022 06:50

I have two of their coats - which are wearing well and warm and comfy.

whitewashing · 23/04/2022 07:30

I have a waterproof coat, I love it! I’ve had it for 5 years and it’s as good as new and we get lots of rain! I like their striped tops too, I’ve had no problems with them losing their shape at all. They are pricey so I wait for the sale, but I’m in my 60’s but I still like to be stylish, I don’t like everything they do, but some of it suits me very well.

Unodosyz · 23/04/2022 07:36

Yes their stuff lasts well and is so comfortable. Except the leggings which have gotten holey but have been worn a lot as comfortable!

sandgrown · 23/04/2022 07:37

The best waterproof dog walking coat I have ever had is from Seasalt .

Mango

Thank you! Had forgotten about Mango.
They do have some nice colours for spring. Ordering some.

LouB76 · 23/04/2022 08:57

@JanisMoplin

They have some lovely dresses. Happy shopping 😁

@LetitiaLeghorn

There isn't one in Manchester either. I think possibly because city dwellers tend to be younger. Quick scan of their shops shows me they are in places like Keswick, where people tend to retire to - so that's their target market, cashed up retirees. Nothing wrong with that.

I like seasalt, their tunics skim my belly and my bum and look presentable for work. They have pockets and I usually buy bold designs... coming out of my dark and dingy invisible phase.

I wore a waterproof coat from them to work the other day and a cheeky git (sorry, "valued customer"), queuing outside for opening, told me my boss paid me too much!!

LouB76 · 23/04/2022 09:15

Pockets in dresses is a new concept to me. What do you put in these pockets?

OP posts:
JanisMoplin · 23/04/2022 09:27

Only speaking for myself but as a Tube user I use pockets to carry
a mask ( yes still masking)
glasses
Airpods
Oyster card
Of course I could put all these in my bag but pockets are easier and save zipping and unzipping.

desiringonlychild2022 · 23/04/2022 09:34

@LouB76 29 year old Londoner and Seasalt customer :) i rely on the tube as my main mode of transport and I carry my mask and phone in the pockets!

Lunificent · 23/04/2022 09:36

Seasalt is in Manchester M and S.

Izzy24 · 23/04/2022 09:38

Dancer47 · 22/04/2022 16:34

It's a fake British brand identity and the stuff is mainly made in Chinese factories with the rest made in Vietnam and Indian sweatshops. same with Joules which I was also stupid enough to fall for as an English clothing brand.

This is why I won’t buy from Seasalt. They advertise as a Cornish company but as you say, not a single piece made in the UK.

ArabeI · 23/04/2022 10:16

I didn't know that about Seasalt. That's disappointing.

Joules quality, etc, dropped some years ago, in my opinion, so I stopped buying from there (I like their plain wellies, however, which are more hard wearing than Hunter and other brands).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/04/2022 10:25

I have two of their stripey tops and like them a lot. The Joules ones are far too thick and boxy for me. However, I don't like many of the colour combinations, or I'd buy more of them.

CarmenThePanda · 23/04/2022 13:38

I do feel hoodwinked by the outsourced manufacturing, in the context of their brand marketing.

but obviously the onus was on me to check.

it isn’t as if most brands, however ethically- intended, aren’t manufacturing in cheaper places.

thegcatsmother · 23/04/2022 13:44

I like their cord skirts, great for work. I also like that it says where a garment is made, so I can choose not to buy those made in China.
