Shameless but do you leave your house open?

JustJam4Tea · 18/04/2022 09:16

When you are in it?

If you leave but other people are in it?

At night? .

All day?

Or is it always locked up right?

Doors unlocked during the day if I'm downstairs. Locked if upstairs or out and overnight

Wallywobbles · 18/04/2022 13:35

Always use to leave the house open unless I was actually out for the day. Now I live with DH it's locked all the time. Does my head in. We live in the middle of fucking nowhere and all our neighbors are related to him.

toomuchlaundry · 18/04/2022 13:48

Contents insurance can also cover you for some claims from other people, so always useful to have

20viona · 18/04/2022 13:49

Always locked when in and out.

BlancmanegeBunny · 18/04/2022 13:54

Unlocked if someone is home. Locked at night or when we go out.

gamerchick · 18/04/2022 13:54

Always locked. They try door handles here. Run in, grab car keys/bags etc. Stuff you wouldn't immediately know was missing. Then your car goes missing through the night or your house gets burgled.

Plus it invalidates your house insurance so why take the risk?

MrsWidgerysLodger · 18/04/2022 13:55

Front door is always locked. Back door often unlocked if we're home but we have a very enclosed garden with neighbours all round and we're always in the rooms nearest the back of the house during the day anyhow. Always lock all the doors before we go to bed

Wombat98 · 18/04/2022 13:57

Lived in a nice quiet town, neighbours were burgled by people walking in the house in the middle of the day. Police said it was quite common. Happened to my friend too.

I have dogs, so always locked as people delivering leaflets try the door.

JungleBungles · 18/04/2022 13:58

Front door always locked (even when home)
Back door open/unlocked if we are home.
Always lock it a night
Also have cameras around the place.
Side gates are always locked we never leave those open.

XenoBitch · 18/04/2022 13:59

Front door locked all the time.
Back door left open if I am home (and it is not cold) for the dog.

Flatbrokefornow · 18/04/2022 13:59

Used to be if the doors were closed, they were locked. I left the keys in them and locked them behind me, whichever way I was going. But now, DD11 comes and goes independently and has a key, so I need to do things differently. It’s not an issue at the moment, because one of us is always in for the dogs, but we are going to need to figure a workable system fairly soon. I’m dreading it - it’s been so lovely not losing my keys! I’m considering smart locks, but I’m not sure how reliable they are.

decentchap · 18/04/2022 14:01

Most theft is 'opportunist'. Leave your stuff on show and a door/window adjacent to the stuff unlocked is asking for trouble.
I lock the ground floor if I will be upstairs for any length of time but not when downstairs. I will not leave the barns unlocked as chain saws etc are easily portable and in demand.
At night (after dark) if we are in a room then its open if not, its usually closed and locked.
Decide what is the best for your quality of life and stick with it - that's what insurance is for.
I'm 6'1, 16 stones fit and do not worry about much, for a woman alone I would be more security minded.

@RampantIvy

Same here *@BarbaraofSeville*.

I have just checked the crime statistics on Police.UK for our area. It has a relatively low crime rate compared to the large town 5 miles away - 63 crimes locally compared to 425 crimes in town, during the month of February, but that is till 63 crimes too many (19 violence and sexual offences, 10 vehicle crime, 9 anti-social behavior and 25 other crimes).

This is why we lock doors.

I just googled my postcode. There have only been 2 reported crimes in the last year and none since June 2021. One anti-social behaviour and one burglary, so obviously the risk it quite low here (although not nil).
mydogisthebest · 18/04/2022 14:41

Front door is always locked unless we are working in the front garden although the key is in the lock all the time.

Back door is never locked during the day and in warmer weather it is usually open so our dogs can go in and out.

We lock the back door at night when we remember which is not very often.

Our back garden is enclosed by thick high hedges (about 8ft high) with a high gate at the end which is padlocked. We also have a side gate from the front garden into the back which is also high and always padlocked. We have them padlocked so they can't be left open accidently or blow open as our dogs would get out.

shabbalabba · 18/04/2022 15:13

Mine is open pretty much all the time(except when away) ...although if I pass the door at night I'll lock it. My car is left open too! 🤣
We live rurally and also not in U.K.

reluctantbrit · 18/04/2022 16:33

Front is always closed as the door does it automatically. I just lock it properly with the key when we are all out and overnight.

Back door - wide open in warm weather when one of us is downstairs. We have a side gate you need to get over/unlock to get into the garden so it is fairly safe but we also have a cat next door who likes to wander in and I prefer to get her out fast (allergic to cats unfortunately) so it's easier to close the doors if we are upstairs.

MadMadMadamMim · 18/04/2022 19:03

I just did the same. Ours was 1 in the last 6 months - and was Domestic Violence. No break ins.

CaptaNoctem · 18/04/2022 21:44

The front door locks itself anyway.

The back door is almost always unlocked during the day but the gate into the garden does have a heavy padlock on it.

Our previous house you had to lock the front door manually. It was only done at night or by the last one out.

Semi rural locations.

goaskmum · 18/04/2022 22:12

My door is locked when:

I’m asleep
I’m out somewhere
Even when I’m in the house

In regards to the latter, it used to be that I’d leave the front door unlocked when I was in the house but i how keep it locked even when I’m inside as you can never be too safe.

So yeah, my doors are pretty much locked 24/7 except when I’m entering or leaving!

JustJam4Tea · 19/04/2022 07:26

We had builders in last year and for about 6 months only had a sheet of plywood over the back door space. No door. Key regularly left out for builders.

We’ve gone to bed with the key left on outside of front door, leave door open if out for dog walk.

Very low crime area.
@wonkygorgeous why do you leave the keys in the ignition overnight (or at all)
Because I'm really forgetful. It's not something I do on purpose but it doesn't worry me when it happens.
