Shameless but do you leave your house open?

When you are in it?

If you leave but other people are in it?

At night? .

All day?

Or is it always locked up right?

Pretty much always locked.
If I’m in the kitchen will have the back doors open but then close and lock if I go upstairs.
Nip out to empty the bins - lock when I come back in.
Not a particularly high crime area but I’m a single parent so I think I just feel safer with them locked.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 18/04/2022 09:59

Front door only locked if we are out or asleep. Back door generally locked if we aren't using it (we don't use the garden very often). But we live on a quiet street with no passing traffic (foot or vehicular) so the only people coming past would be the neighbours. Busy enough that there would always be someone around, quiet enough that an intruder would be noticed

Harridan1981 · 18/04/2022 10:00

Only locked at night or if we go out.

Stellamar · 18/04/2022 10:00

The street-facing doors are always locked 24/7, unless we're going through them. There's a locked gate which secures the back garden. I leave the doors beyond that open if we are in the house in the day and need the breeze .

PurpleDrain · 18/04/2022 10:00

And to pp yes my windows are open nearly all day

stripeyflowers · 18/04/2022 10:01

Never lock porch door unless going away.
Same with front door.
Back door always locked except in nice weather or gardening.
Never really thought about it until now!

Ariela · 18/04/2022 10:03

Front: locked - this is because anyone opening the door may get bitten by the dog, we had an unfortunate incident with a Hermes driver who was told not to come in while we went to get a pen (this was years ago pre hand held thingummies), who did.
Back: Opens to enclosed garden with fields beyond. Always left wide open if the weather good enough so the dog can come in and out. I don't think anyone would voluntarily choose to step into the garden with the dog. Is locked if out/gone to bed.

My doors are always locked unless I’m literally outside the door for a few moments.
Many years ago my parents , lived in a relatively crime free “nice” area They unlocked the front door when they’d go out during day, but if both in wouldn’t lock it again till night- they assumed they’d know and hear if someone came to front door
They were wrong
They were in the back garden one day. Someone must have come to front door and knocked quietly or whatever, and then tired the porch door. They then came into the house. Went upstairs to parents bedroom and would have seen them in the garden. They took all my mothers jewellery including engagement ring, wedding band (she’d been married for 40 years), inherited jewellery form her mother and Mil . None of it high value but irreplaceable. They also took other liftable ornaments and a painting. Clearly they had time to have a good look round and choose items. They didn’t completely ransack the house, knew what they were looking for and where,
None of the family who remember the devastation it caused my mum ever ever left external doors unlocked during day or night ever again even when in the house.

It is not worth the heartache for that one rare exceptional bastard.

couchparsnip · 18/04/2022 10:05

I live in a largish town in the suburbs. The front door is unlocked when someone is in and awake. We only lock it at night.

We have a porch so there's two closed doors between us and the outside. I've never felt unsafe.

Locking your door during the day seems paranoid to me living here although we did do it when we lived in a big city.

siriusblackcat · 18/04/2022 10:07

All doors always locked. We've had people trying the handles on a few occasions.
Also keys used to be high up as DS has ASD and used to run out the house when stressed, thankfully those incidents are few and far between now.

BeePot · 18/04/2022 10:08

Doors are always locked, I live in the middle of nowhere but still make sure it's always locked.

yikesanotherbooboo · 18/04/2022 10:08

Back door is a Yale so unless it is propped open , it is 'locked'.
Front door has a latch; we put the dead lock or bolts across overnight and the first thing I do in the morning is unlock it.
Yes to locking if no one in or teen with headphones in alone.

Sswhinesthebest · 18/04/2022 10:09

If I were a burglar I’d be targeting quiet rural areas!

toomuchlaundry · 18/04/2022 10:10

I assume those of you who leave doors unlocked don’t have contents insurance

lookingsusbro · 18/04/2022 10:11

We don't use the front door so it's permanently locked and bolted. The back door is always locked unless we're in the garden or I'm cooking and the kitchen is too hot, even then I'll lock it if I go upstairs. The only thing unlocked during the day is the garden gate. We're on the edge of a city and there's always reports of people trying doors and opportunity burglaries during the day never mind at night.

AuntieMarys · 18/04/2022 10:11

Doors always locked. Why wouldn't you?

MadMadMadamMim · 18/04/2022 10:13

Always open. Live rurally. Occasionally remember to put the chain on the front door at night. Not always.

Don't lock up when we go out. Don't think I have a door key.

OldTinHat · 18/04/2022 10:13

Front and back doors both locked and I leave the key in both.

MadMadMadamMim · 18/04/2022 10:14

@toomuchlaundry

I assume those of you who leave doors unlocked don’t have contents insurance
You'd be correct.
KitKattaktik · 18/04/2022 10:16

Front is locked (porch unlocked) side gate padlocked. Back door usually unlocked as we're invariably in the garden and it's a pita to keep unlocking it if we're in and out. We live in a village and back onto farmland.

WhatHaveIFound · 18/04/2022 10:16

Our doors are always locked.

I'm not sure how you'd stand insurance wise if entry was through an unlocked door and the police in my local area keep saying that most burglaries are opportunist rather than pre planned.

I know someone whose two cars were stolen as the thieves came through an unlocked door and walked out with the keys. It took six months and a lot of stress for their claim to be sorted.

ScaldedBy · 18/04/2022 10:16

As a security freak doors are locked home or not. We also have security cameras too. One back door is open if we are home because one dog needs it to go out (we have a small dog door built into glass for most dogs but one is bigger so needs the bigger fly screen dog door to exit).
All dogs are locked inside when no one is home for their safety and my peace of mind. I have inside security cameras I put out when we are all out and only perimeter ones when we are home.
We live semi rural in a "safe" suburb but I trust no one.

TimBoothseyes · 18/04/2022 10:16

Front door is always locked. We only have sliding patio doors at the back and so they are always open if we are in as there is no other windows in that room (the living room). We do lock it at night though as there is a public footpath 10 metres away and we are not allowed to put up any fencing. I fucking hate this house.

ElegantlyTouched · 18/04/2022 10:19

Can't remember the last time I locked the door.

HugsAlwaysAvailable · 18/04/2022 10:22

My doors are always locked, even though I live in a quiet cul de sac. I've got thumb turn locks, so it's just send nature to turn them once I've closed the door, I don't even think about it.
