Shameless but do you leave your house open?

JustJam4Tea · 18/04/2022 09:16

When you are in it?

If you leave but other people are in it?

At night? .

All day?

Or is it always locked up right?

Back door is wide open all day when it’s warm and we’re home. Front door locks itself when it closes. Never Chubb lock it unless we’re out for the day or on holiday.

InFiveMins · 18/04/2022 09:41

Always locked.

PussyCatEatingEasterEggs · 18/04/2022 09:41

Front door is always locked (multi point lock and night latch) even if we're in. Keys never left in it.
Back door is locked unless we're outside, same with conservatory doors.
Both side gates are locked with a key unless DH goes for a walk or if we're doing stuff around the front of the house.
Garage (integral) up and over door is always locked and alarmed 24/7. Inside door to hall is always open during the day (it's more of a big utility room) but locked shut at night.
Everything is locked overnight, with a patlock on the french doors as the locking mechanism is a bit iffy...but you'd have to break into the conservatory first iyswim.

GalesThisMorning · 18/04/2022 09:41

Only locked if we go away on holiday. Have lived here 15 years, never locked my door. My neighbours are the same. Handy if you need to borrow flour etc. as the response is generally 'we're out, help yourself'

TokyoTen · 18/04/2022 09:44

Always looked day and night. Only exception is back patio doors open in summer if we are in the room (but side gate is always locked).

FollowTheLizards · 18/04/2022 09:44

The front door is always locked. Although DP has accidently left his house and car keys in the door on a couple of occassions overnight and fortunately nothing bad has happened (we live in a fairly low crime area). Back door is often left open during the day in summer when we're home. Would never think to lock up if I was gardening or hanging the washing out, but our house and garden is fairly small so we'd easily notice a burglar!

Courante · 18/04/2022 09:44

It's always locked - well the front door and the side gate. The patio and side doors are often open, if we're in, in warm weather but that's all.

I've always done this so very much an ingrained habit. In area, in the last 20 years, one neighbour had a bike nicked out of an open garage, but that's it. We do have two small dogs who wouldn't be trusted not to rush off for a wander around is someone opened the front door or gate without us knowing. I also don't trust any dog for the following reason:

When I was young a friend of mine (who I didn't even know that well and hadn't been to my house before) cycled up round the side of our house, opened the side gate and then cycled into our garden. I had no idea she was coming or why she did this rather than ringing the door bell. Unfortunately, our dog nipped her. We had no idea she had even been round at all until the Police turned up on our doorstep, and this was an exceptionally friendly well behaved dog.

YorkieTheRabbit · 18/04/2022 09:46

Front door is always locked unless we’re doing anything in the front garden
Side door always locked
Doors at the back are unlocked if we’re in bottom part of the garden but locked if we’re anywhere else in the garden.
Everywhere is locked at night including garage and shed.

Saisong · 18/04/2022 09:46

Leafy suburbs here. Front door latches automatically, but we lock the deadbolt also at night/when out. Backdoor is mostly unlocked during the day if we are here, but locked at dusk, plus I lock it during the day if only me here and I'm upstairs working.

My family back home live really rurally and don't actually have a front door key (true story). The house is set back through a farmyard, not really visible from the (dead-end) track. It's rare that there is never anyone there, dogs run free. Not unheard of for visitors to arrive when family is out and put the kettle on etc.

TheChosenTwo · 18/04/2022 09:47

We used to leave our front door unlocked all day, it was lovely! People just used to come and go (family and friends, not strangers! But they knew our front door would always be unlocked so would just knock, open and shout hello and then come in).
Then we renovated and got a new door and it locks closed. I miss just having people walking in - I know this makes me very unMN where people lock their door and shut their curtains to avoid all visitors!!
Back doors are unlocked, side door is locked but we don’t really ever use it.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 18/04/2022 09:49

I live semi rually and my front door is locked for only a few hours a day between the last person coming in from a late shift in hospitality and me getting up. On the weekend that can be as short as 3 hours

As a child I lived somewhere similar and the front door was only locked when the whole family was out at the same time which was rarely

voleshuffle · 18/04/2022 09:49

Always locked, all the time. Where we lived previously on a nice estate the police came round trying door handles and then pushing doors open and shouting to alert the homeowner. It followed a spate of thieves opening unlocked doors and gaining access to halls usually where hand bags and car keys were kept. The thieves would then lock the door so when you heard your car starting up you couldn't actually get outside.

The response from the home owners was usually but we live in such a nice area to which the police said exactly why your homes were targeted. My friend on another estate heard someone try her door handle and realised that 2 men were trying the door handles of every house. This was at school pick up time when they figured lots of people who would normally be home would be out doing the school run. All caught on CCTV and they were known to the police.

Both Dh and I had our family homes burgled when we were children. I think that fear has stayed with us.

RampantIvy · 18/04/2022 09:50

DH's office is by the front door, so I don't always lock the door behind me if I am going shopping for example. We always lock all doors at night or if leaving the house empty. We live in a low crime area, not a no crime area. There are often reports of break one on our local Facebook pages.

We keep our garden gate locked as well because there has been a spate of thefts from gardens - mainly garden furniture.

nearlyspringyay · 18/04/2022 09:51

Front and back doors locked at night. You can't open the front door without a key anyway. We also alarm overnight and when we are all out. Unfortunately burglaries aren't uncommon here, our shed has been broken into and our car, fortunately not the house. 'Leafy' commuter belt town.

DinosApple · 18/04/2022 09:52

Front door is locked mostly, unless everyone is awake and downstairs (eg in winter. Back door always open in the day and sometimes at night if we forget.

We live in a village and there was a spate of burglaries a few years ago.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/04/2022 09:53

Back door always open until I go to bed. I am in and out all day with the dog. Front door always locked as we never use it.

FourTeaFallOut · 18/04/2022 09:53

I have only ever locked it before I go to bed.

SparkleSpangle · 18/04/2022 09:53

French doors always locks as we rarely use them and toddler would escape if they were unlocked.

Front door is Yale lock and we don't use it often.

Conservatory doors which is our main door is unlocked in the morning and left unlocked all day. Locked up again when we go to bed.

If DH is asleep I'd lock if I went out. Or if we all went out we'd lock up.

We are pretty rural west country. But on a road so I wouldn't risk leaving it unlocked when no one was around.

I would never leave any house unlocked at night if there were children in. More to keep the children in than anything else. Doesn't matter how rural you are they can still wander off.

Lollipop858 · 18/04/2022 09:54

We live on an Estate in N.London and my door is open all day, locked at night. DC come in and out when they’re playing. I’ll lock it sometimes when they’re at school and I’m home alone though

RosesAndHellebores · 18/04/2022 09:54

Front door is always locked. If doors at the back of the house are open the side gate is locked.

Our road and house are like Fort knox.

tattychicken · 18/04/2022 09:55

Never locked, day or night. Lock the front door when we go away but still leave the back door unlocked for whoever is coming round to feed indoor pets. Always takes a while to find the key!

Clymene · 18/04/2022 09:56

Our front door is unlocked until we go to bed. Back door is open (ajar) from the moment we get up in warm weather but locked at bedtime.

I don't lock the car a lot of the time either.

Junebughustle · 18/04/2022 09:57

Both doors always locked. There have been lots of burglaries in the area, some while people have been home.

Even before this we always locked up. Really don't understand why taking the time to turn a key in order to protect your safety is so arduous for some.

marvellousmaple · 18/04/2022 09:57

Only lock up completely if there is nobody going to be home for a length of time. At night front door is locked. 3 backdoors are variable.Usually I forget and at least one is unlocked. If we are home we don't lock any doors except as I said in other thread if I am the only one home and having a shower. TBF . Have huge dog and live rurally.
Those who lock up all the time do you open your windows?

muchprefersummer · 18/04/2022 09:58

If we're in the house, both front and back doors open - always locked at night. If we leave our eldest in the house on his own - we lock him in - he has the keys to get out if he wished/needs.
